My son and I have fished winter steel-head with Travis on his drift boat on the Coquille, Umpqua and Rouge rivers. This year we decided to try fishing when you don’t have to knock ice out of the rod guides every few minutes or wear gloves.(Hot tip! Cut the first finger off your glove so you can hold the line while casting. When done casting, place the cut off finger tip back on. Works like a charm!) So my son, son-in-law, and I went on a summer salmon trip on the Rogue, and Oregon in August is just beautiful. Also successful — we had 4 fish the first day and limits the next day! Travis knows all the hot spots, and knows what the fish are biting on any given day. His equipment and boat are also top notch — excellent quality and very well maintained. But the real reason we keep going back is his good attitude and fun personality. I can’t tell you how many guides I’ve gone with or fishing boat captains whose attitude just sucked. Yeah, some of them knew how to guide, but even when the trip was successful it was still no fun. These guides had a hard time hiding their disgust when you missed a bite or lost a fish. But Travis doesn’t even try! If you actually know how to fish and still screw up, he’ll have a merry time poking fun at your screw-up.(Lucky for me I haven’t screwed up so far — I haven’t missed any bites or lost any fish due to my fault. The ones that got away were all his fault…) However, if you’re a beginner,(or sensitive) Travis is very easy going and supportive. Give him a try, you really can’t ask for a better guide or fishing experience.

Travis Malone might be the best guide in Oregon. We recently returned from a two day fishing trip with Travis on the Rogue River. Fishing for Fall Chinook, Mr. Malone put on us on the fish most of the time… and when he didn’t he sped us up or down river in his sweet jet boat and found where the big ones were biting. It was pretty great. Travis is more than just a guide too, he is like a buddy who takes you out on his boat, pays for the gas, baits your hooks, and makes fun of you when you snag your line or jerk too soon. If you’re in southern Oregon, I highly recommend fishing with Travis Malone. A quick word of advice if you’re planning a fishing trip with Travis. He loves Diet Rockstar so if you want to insure he takes you to «Travis’s Hole» bring him a couple cold ones.
