Holiday Inn Grand Rapids Downtown

This was not my first choice but the best available during my dates of travel. I would have preferred to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott. I say this by way of demonstrating that I don’t have 5-​star expectations!
And trust me, that was lucky as this hotel was poor.
Specifically, if you’re going to build a hotel within spitting distance of a freeway, how about sound proofing the windows? From my room, I could literally hear every motor rev and car drive over the grooves in the road. And no! Having clunky and loud air conditioning that half drowns out the outside noise does not count as sound proofing.
Wi-​fi was woefully unreliable. I ended up tethering my phone for most of the time.
The check-​in staff was pretty unfriendly and the breakfast was pretty average too.

The sound proofing leaves a lot to be desired. Very noisy but the location downtown is the best. It is my go to place in Grand Rapids

Stayed here for my sister’s bachelorette party the weekend of May 6 – 8. I booked two rooms for the weekend, and requested adjoining rooms, which I got. One of them had a fridge and microwave combination, the other did not. Upon check in, I found out that they have a discount for Grand Valley students. Being a Grand Valley student, I got the discount added to the rooms I booked. Thinking it was only like 10% or something, I was SHOCKED to see the price of the room drop as much as it did, just because I was a Grand Valley student! The front desk staff were incredibly helpful.
The rooms (202 and 201) were fairly nice, but they only leave a narrow path for walking from the door to the window. The beds were comfortable, and the rooms were clean. I really liked the Founders bottle openers attached to the sink in the room. We were on the total opposite side of the building from the highway, so away from the noise of the highway, and directly across from the stairs and around the corner from the elevators. Walls seem to be paper thin. The door handle on room 201 appeared broken, and we had to kind of fight with it to get the door to shut and latch. Other than that, no issues at all with the rooms.
Free parking was super convenient, and all bars and restaurants are within walking distance of this hotel (assuming you’re willing to walk across the bridge). My only complaint is that there is no free continental breakfast available.
I would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity.

Always like staying here when we visit Grand Rapids. Rooms are clean and kept up to date. Best thing however is the proximity to downtown. Easy walking distance to all the downtown venues. Let’s face it — if your visiting Beer City USA you’d be better off walking!

The hotel is nice and clean, and the front desk employees were very courteous. The room was nice as well, but for some reason we ended up in a wheelchair accessible room. This added an interesting element to our stay. The shower was non-​standard, the bed was a full rather than king or queen, and it was right next to the elevator so we certainly heard people loudly during the night. Love my husband, but not enough for a full bed… This girl needs her space!
You can’t beat the location of the (and free parking); we walked across the river easily to restaurants and breweries.
All in all, I would probably stay here again, but in a different room.

Clean and welcoming when you entered lobby. Pool and hot tub were nice to enjoy. Our king size room was very comfortable with 4 king size fluffy pillows. Impressed that there was a wet bar with fridge and microwave. Great location being close to museum, expressway, and downtown food choices.

I stay at a lot of holiday inns and this one is right up there. Room was big and clean, and bed and pillows were very comfortable. The only drawback is the noise. While I know it’s in the city and don’t expect it to be «country quiet», the noise from the express way was surprising. My advice, get a room on the east side next to the museum.

Stayed here overnight for a night on the town in Grand Rapids. Highly recommend this hotel for its location to many attractions, breweries and restaurants — they’re all mostly within walking distance or a short drive away.
It’s an average Holiday Inn with some minor updates but not one that I’d expect to pay over $ 200 for. All things considered it’s easily a better option than other more expensive options in the area because most of our time was spent outside of the room. This hotel also offers free parking and wifi which offsets the rate a bit.
Front desk staff was friendly and allowed us to check in early without hesitation even though they were near capacity. Room was clean and comfortable.

Eh. Kinda run down and musty. Disappointing as I always stay in HIE and won’t stay here again.

Hotel is right along the freeway and a popular intersection in town, so you’ll hear traffic noise pretty much all night long to go with the periodic dinging of the elevator. Everything else is standard inoffensive chain hotel fare, but if you’re a light sleeper, beware – you might want to pick yourself a more out-​of-​the-​way place to stay.

The Grand Rapids Holiday Inn was a very clean and well run hotel. Our room was very clean and the people there were very friendly. What I really liked about this hotel was it is pet friendly hotel and that’s a big plus for me because I travel with my dog. So if you’re really looking for a very clean well run hotel in Grand Rapids I would definitely recommend this Holiday Inn hotel.

We stayed here so that my husband could visit some breweries without having to worry about driving a few hours to get home. I am pregnant and not feeling well, so I stayed in and watched tv. I was really pleased with our bed and the variety of pillows. Free wifi was nice! The staff was very kind and professional. The parking lot is as easy as they come. I have not one complaint!
I was also excited to have a restaurant onsite — the restaurant staff were also very kind and accommodating. The baked potato was delicious! I would recommend staying here.

Not bad but loud highway noise and very thin walls. I’m glad we got a discounted room because if I paid anywhere close to $ 200 I would have felt ripped off. The beds were ok but too small for two people. The bathroom was so clean it seemed brand new, very nice. The AC was a little loud, but with the highway noise and the thin walls you will want to wear earplugs anyway. Probably the thinnest walls I’ve experienced in a hotel room in 20 years. Really liked Grand Rapids, will look for a quieter option next time.

In room A/​C held together by duct tape and ran constantly loud, but never actually cooled the room. No other rooms were available at the time. So, I basically had to sleep in a hot box for the weekend. Definitely going to have to look elsewhere next 4^th of July weekend.

Had a horrible stay at this hotel. We were there for 1 night and were put in a room that may as well have been on the freeway the noise was so bad. In addition, there was a group of teenage boys there supposedly with their parents that were on our floor. They were yelling and running down the hallway for a few hours. We complained but there wasn’t much to be done. For $ 200 for the stay it was a complete ripoff. We did not sleep at all and when I asked for a refund I was told they can’t do that. I guess I will stick with a Marriott or Hilton property in the future.

I’ve been staying here once a year for the last 5 – 6 years. People are very friendly. Perfect location to downtown with free parking.
Rooms are okay… Nothing special. Walls are a bit thin.
Internet speed is embarrassingly SLOW. Less than 1 Mbps down (unusable). Any cell phone signal is faster than this network. If they fix their internet issues, I’d be giving them 5 stars.

Location and staff is what warrants any stars for rating. Room cleanliness is questionable: found a soiled towel with brown make up folded neatly with clean pile of towels. The bed was filled with red curly hairs from either previous patron or house staff. Also, no convenient stores located in downtown area in the event of purchasing miscellaneous items. The Pearl Street restaurant offers delicious food and, again, polite staff. Coffee offered in room. No microwave or refrigerator in room. However, Amanda (at the front desk) was very accommodating following us receiving notice that our room had been downgraded. She was professional and kind.

The good:
— Friendly desk staff upon check in. We mentioned we were there to check out breweries and she gave us a map and list of the local ones and recommended the ones she liked best.
–Sent us a mini fridge immediately upon request and waived the fee.
–While the pool is smallish it was clean and nobody else seemed to be using it.
–Location is within 5 – 10 minutes of everything you would want to do.
–Complimentary Parking
–Grand Rapids Public Museum is right next door.
–Complimentary make up remover and full length mirror in room
The bad:
–Wifi was tricky most of the weekend.
–Some channels on the t.v. were fuzzy
–The noise of the interstate was disturbing at night, I would recommend requesting a room at the other end of the building.
–At one point both elevators were broken and we had to take the stairs multiple times. Then only one was up and running for the rest of the stay.
–Both vending machines I tried were not accepting dollars and I had to return to my room to get my credit card.
–No steam fan in bathroom
My overall verdict: I would definitely stay here again but its not the Ritz thats for sure!

Great location. Great service. Cheaper than staying across the river, so if you’re willing to walk across the bridge, you have access to everything across the way while saving a few bucks.
Stayed here last weekend. We walked from our hotel everywhere — even considering how cold it’s been. The walk to Ionia street isn’t that bad at all.
Room was clean. People were friendly.
The restaurant (for breakfast) kinda sucked though. If I’m back in the area, I’ll be heading to Big Boy, which is right through the underpass of 131. Yes… I think Big Boy would be a step up from the breakfast we had at the restaurant.

I travel about 10 months of the year for work, and all of that time is spent in hotels. Recently I spent a week in Grand Rapids at this Holiday Inn. Comparatively to all other hotels of its class I would say it’s average. The font desk staff while pleasant in greeting you seemed very un-​knowledgeable about there jobs or how to treat guests when issues arise (which several did during my stay: Read below)
Lobby/​public spaces:
Clean, spacious, the pool is rather small but indoors. the business center was an extension of the front desk and directly in front of the elevators which left nothing of privacy for anyone needing to use the computers.
Room:
Was well kept, and spacious. They have plenty of outlets near the bed and even had USB Charging ports on the night stand. The mattress was nice and pillows were full, not over used. One Quirk to this property is the vanity/​sink is not part of the slightly cramped bathroom (water closet). Rather is across from the bed near the entry door to the room.
Bar/​restaurant:
Good food, and the kitchen stayed open pretty late. The staff was friendly and drinks didn’t break the bank like some hotels.
Internet speeds:
SLOW! 2.16Mbps down and 1.78 Mbps up
Summery:
The hotel is nice but plagued with matinence issues. During the week we spent two days with rolling power outages, ranging between 1 – 6 hours each that were localized just to this building not the city’s power. Till they finally replaced something on the roof. Than later in the week my sink began to back up thick black fluid. Which the front desk blamed on the room next to us. And took the hotel two days to get it cleared up by having a professional plummer go at it from both our rooms for about three hours. Most hotels after kicking you out of your room for that length of time offer to move you or the manager at least contacts you to apologize.
