Description

Specialties

We grow organic produce and deliver it to our onsite shop for sale to the public. On Market Days (currently Friday, Saturday & Sunday) we offer extra local, small batch products like honey, olive oil, and home made baked goods. Guests can also pet and hand feed our heritage animals or walk into our fields to pick their own strawberries.

History

Established in 2014.

The first farmer that settled here in 1898 became a true homesteader. He had a vineyard on the hilltop just above the barns and would make wine in the basement of the old farm house, along with other preserves to sustain his family throughout the year. The farm being passed down thru generations eventually went up for sale and a neighboring family that had a deep love for the land purchased the farm in 2011 with a vision of letting it remain agricultural and sustainable for future generations. Abel Basch, came on in July 2014 learning the secrets of this land and quickly filled the boots of the new farmer. There have been many changes over the years but we are so excited for whats in store. The farm will remain a beautiful, rustic escape for our visitors and the produce will always be organic. We are just a seedling looking to grow and provide to you this lands incredible bounty.

Meet the Manager

Abel B.

Manager

Abel was born in L.A. and came to Santa Barbara to attend culinary school. After finishing his studies he worked in restaurants but along with his love of cooking food he started to love growing food. He started an «urban» garden on the patio of his apartment growing herbs, vegetables and mushrooms. Even though he worked at some of the most renowned restaurants he felt a disconnect between customers and their food, and preparing food on the front line started to feel more like an assembly line. Looking to connect with his family history he left for Israel to study permaculture at the Hava Ve Adam Farm where he learned to work with nature instead of against it. Meanwhile his father started searching for a farm where Abel could put into practice what he was learning. Abel’s father ended up finding the perfect spot here at The Farmstead. And so the story is really just beginning.
