I just took the conceal and carry class offered by Troy at the Denver location. No, there isn’t much hands on training but how to safely handle and shoot a firearm but a conceal and carry class isn’t the place for that. Troy offers a classroom setting that will inform you of your rights and responsibilities as a person who conceals and carries. He brings up various scenarios that most of us haven’t thought of from a legal standpoint. He lets you know of the RESPONSIBILITY involved and that a CCW permit doesn’t give you permission to open fire on anyone whom you feel threatened by. Great videos that show the benefits of CCW and video showing CCW holders going too far. Eliminating the threat to your life is the key. Troy emphasizes that. I have heard people complain that Troy doesn’t give enough hands on training. Newsflash: A conceal and carry class is not the best place by any stretch to learn firearms safety, shooting and fundamentals. There are plenty of ranges in Colorado that offer affordable classes on how to handle and shoot your guns in a safe and effective manner and the company that Troy works with is one of them. If you can’t clear a «stovepipe» jam from your gun and have trouble dropping the magazine, you don’t belong in a CCW class but a basic firearms safety and instruction class. If you don’t know how to clean your gun, a CCW class isn’t the place for it. Troy is funny and informative in his class. Troy will also give you the basics on the laws but will let you know that it is up to you to do further research and learn the ins and outs of the laws regarding gun owners.

Joe is a complete badass and I know if I was ever forced to protect myself or my family I am competent and capable of doing so.

Home alone — 3 guys bust in. OK, I think they were guys cause they had masks on. First I hear a noise(door being kicked in) but I’m sick so I think something fell off the wall in the other room. I go to investigate… that’s when I see the 3 guys who hear me coming and are commencing to leave — that’s the good news. The bad news is that if they hadn’t decided to leave I might(not) be writing this differently. Fast forward to today. With trepidation I sign up for a 6 hours concealed carry class — Tac*One’s — all women. I haven’t really decided to carry — concealed or not — but I do want to be prepared should the above or something like it happen again. Like a car jacking — or coming home late when another car decides to crash the back of mine for whatever reason. 15 women and one hunk of an instructor — ok, not the point but still. 3 hours of information every person, not just women, should know about personal safety, how to handle a firearm and how to think in an adrenaline loaded situation. Then another 3 hours of practice — targets, paper and real. They supply the information and Glock 17T’s with ammo that is simulated — spell check won’t let me write the word which is… s i m u n i t i o n — a form of ammo that won’t hurt the participants but reacts to targets realistically.
Net result: after a «force on force» practice session, I found out how I’d react if someone came at me with intent to harm. Admittedly most of this kind of training is for law enforcement but statistically law enforcement isn’t always right there when the something hits the fan. Like the home alone situation. So ladies — and gentlemen — the price of this training is worth the confidence building. And ladies — bring your cameras — and practice safety with the knowledge you’ll know how to protect yourself.
