History

Established in 2002.

The owner, Greg Sands, started working in the swimming pool industry while in high school. After graduating college he started a career in marketing with A.C. Nielsen Marketing Research. Several years later moved into Logistics with Ryder Systems. The dream of owning a pool business was always in the back of his mind. In 2002 this dream came to be a reality when Backyard Dreams Pools, Spas, and More opened their doors. Since that day, Backyard Dreams has become the metro areas pool and spa experts. Hundreds of pools and spas have been sold and installed. We pride ourselves on staying ahead with technology and new products. Custom inground pools is a very exciting part of this business. To see a backyard design, created with the homeowner, transform into a place for family and friends to gather is awesome. We carry some of the best products on the market. Big Green Egg grills, Sundance Spas, BioGuard pool and spa chemicals, and Ft. Wayne inground pools.

I started in the swimming pool business in 1979 in Wood River, IL. Continued to work there until graduation from SIUE in 1986. I then started a career in marketing while continuing to do swimming pool work and sell pool chemicals from my home. In 2002, I decided to leave corporate America and start Backyard Dreams. Word of mouth has been our greatest asset. We pride ourselves in offering the best pool and spa products available.

This company half way opened my pool this year– which is fine– my pump was broken and there was only so much they could do. That was $ 200, I paid it without complaining because it wasn’t their fault they couldn’t open it all the way. They took my pool cover to get it repaired because there was a small tear. This was June. Tried to contact them about the Pool cover ALL SUMMER LONG. Seriously probably called them 10 or more times and left messages trying to figure out what happened with my pool cover and/​or if any progress had been made in its repair. Nothing. Even went in person to be told by someone who didn’t usually work the front desk that they didn’t know about it and they’d leave a message for the right person. SEPTEMBER comes and finally the lady calls and tells me that the place they take it to can’t repair it and they said I need a new cover. I asked for estimates and they take another week or 2 to tell me that it would be MINIMALLY 3k+ for their cheapest model. I left a message and said no thanks I’ll come get my cover. They called back and said whoops we accidently sent it to the company that replaces the covers so they could make a pattern from the old one. I tell them to get it back and that id pick it up when it arrives. Another few more weeks go by and they called to say that the cover is now back and we could come pick it up for $ 190. I was thinking what on earth? 190 for WHAT exactly? Holding my cover hostage all summer? They said it was because the company that looks at the tear charges just for them to assess the cover. I called B.S. and sent my husband up there to try to get it back without paying. They refused to give me my cover without paying. I got it back (now October!) and my pool guy that has been taking care of my pool all summer and another company BOTH said that the cover could definitntly have been repaired at a small cost and that likely, when they saw my nice house and realized I paid without complaining for a full pool opening when barely any work was done to the pool they thought they could get any money out of me without question. Stay away from this place. A bunch of crooks.
