A very scruffy graveyard The Bay View Cemetery was established back in 1728 and is officially the third oldest graveyard in Gloucester. It’s a relatively small cemetery located on a rather steep hill. The cemetery was in bad shape the last time I was there. Many of the old gravestones were just nubs or lying on the ground. It looked liked someone just mowed the place but did a pretty crappy job of it. Lots of prickles, thorns and small stumps made walking through it difficult. Many of the old gravestones are interesting with lots of angels, weird designs and death heads. Hard to read names and dates and most of the memorials are modest and simple. These were poor people that probably didn’t have a whole lot of money or time to spend on death. The graveyard does have some beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding area. Bay View is a sad and forlorn place but one that should be remembered.
