Nicky’s Moving & Storage

This is by far the worst moving company I have experienced. They could not take my four-​poster bed apart necessitating my hiring a furniture repair man to do so. The owner of Nicky’s said they do basic things not an Ethan Allen bed. In addition, they would not put together a desk set since they did not take it apart. These two things added $ 200 to the cost of the move. There was extensive damage to furniture in three of four instances caused by adhesive tape that was used to secure padding to furniture. In one instance where the finish was removed off an end table their insurance paid $ 9. In addition, since they spent over an hour trying to take the bed apart, the move took eight hours. The men were very slow and they blamed the prolonged moving time as due to the long walk from the elevator. In addition, they went to an office complex across the street, instead of my residential development. They wasted 45 minutes doing this. I called them and told them they were not at my loading dock which they denied. I had given them written directions which they said they left on the truck while they started to unload at the office complex.
I have to add how they came unprepared in terms of tools. They used my Allen’s wrench kit in attempt to take the bed apart. It disappeared after that. I never got it back. The leader of the group said I probably put it in a drawer. Why would I do that? They also had to borrow tools from the office where I lived.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

No, no, no. After a positive experience with the initial phone call it turned into a nightmare. I dropped off the deposit check the next day. 5 days later I got a phone call from a man asking me to describe what items I would be moving. I said that I had already given that info and he said, «oh yes, I see it here». He then said that they couldn’t move us on the day I had reserved which was only 10 days in the future). I protested, he offered me 3 days later, I protested again and he offered me the next day.
Then on moving day they said we had deposited $ 100. My husband had to show them the photocopy of the check for them to credit the $ 150.
We had hoped that they would move stuff that we were going to donate down to the front porch for us but they said that they only handled stuff that they were going to move. It would have meant extra money for them and it was a real hassle for us, especially since they had delayed us.

Moving with Nicky’s was a horror. Let me count the ways.
1. they came with a truck that was too small
2. they forgot the wardrobes
3. one of the movers was totally hostile
4. they dragged my mattress through dirt before covering it
5. they left a leg of an antique dresser at the empty house
6. they didn’t replace the table tops
7. they broke the mattress frame
8. they refused to move my art work and had to come back another day
9. the estimate was $ 600 less than the actual move
10. they don’t answer the phone on a regular basis
11. the month of «free» storage doesn’t mention the «unloading» fee of over $ 100
12. we ended up needing another mover entirely after paying Nicky about $ 1600 for a move of 4 miles
It was a traumatic and horrible experience!!!

Nicky’s Moving is the shadiest company you can find. After they destroyed several pieces of furniture and avoided me for 3 months to make good on the insurance — 60c per lb, I found out that they change business names /​addresses every few years. Lee — is Leon McWilliams. Good luck trying to get in touch with him regarding problems. Once they take your money — he doesn’t care.
Cheap is so costly!

This move was one of the more horrific experiences of my life. They broke things right and left. They broke an entire leg off of an antique love seat.
The movers were untrained. That’s right, no training at all. While most of them did not speak, the head of the group was a nasty, insolent little well, rhymes with stick (as in to stick) and is also a synonym for it, and I don’t mean the short version of Richard. This guy had a temper tantrum, got in my face and screamed at me because he was almost done with the move, was tired and was convinced my couch would not fit through my apartment door. So he decided to leave it in the courtyard of my building and leave. Then another guy said for $ 35 extra he would move it into the apartment, and did very easily. I also called the boss for these guys to complain about them leaving my my couch in the courtyard. He said that his guy was the expert.
This is one of those deals where a guy hires people off the street who need work, pays them almost nothing while they work themselves half to death. The saddest moment of this for me was to see the guys leaving and seeing them feasting on skimpy McDonald’s hamburgers (one each, not Big Macs) because they were so exhausted and starved and yet so poor.
As for the damage and missing valuables: not their problem. Should have gotten insurance. They could not have cared less. You know the movers who give everyone else a bad name? This is them.

I can’t believe I never wrote this review. I am moving again and looking at movers, which made me think of Nicky’s. Set up was easy and the guys showed up on time. However, they took forever to move my stuff. In addition, they knocked the fire extinguisher off of my apartment hall wall. It shot out all of it’s contents, so the whole building was filled with white dust. That set off the main fire alarm, which then rang for half the move. All the tenants called and complained to the landlord, and I called the main office, who promised to have someone over to clean it up. They half ass cleaned it up, and I told them I was going to be charged by my landlord for the damage and the extinguisher. They said they would reimburse me. Well, of course I lost my whole security deposit and they didn’t pay me a dime. They fought me on it because the sloppy movers were telling them that the extinguisher was hanging off of the wall, ready to fall off. No, it was not. I basically paid $ 1500 for a 1 bedroom move because I lost my whole deposit. Never again!!!

This is actually a place that should be reviewed twice. First review would be about the set up and customer service (which I would give two stars). Second review would be the actual movers (which I would give four to four and a half stars).
The gist of the customer service is that they are not as knowledgable on calls as you’d like. Instead, they put you on hold constantly or don’t answer the phone. Their response to emails is non-​existant, and their call back rate from message is at least 24 hours (if not significantly more).
When I had the actual movers come, they were fantastic. Very fast and friendly and right on time. Worked quickly and carefully and were agreeable. They wrap and package nicely and come with a very large truck.
I have also intended to use their storage facilities, but that didn’t work out. They use
«crates» that are 5×7. When I asked if my couch would fit (7 ft long) they told me no. They did say they could store it, but that would be an additional $ 25 a month. Since they were already charging $ 50+ per crate, they were very overpriced. Be very wary of their storage sizes — large items will not fit!
Overall, I would only use them for moving $ 103 per hour for three men is excellent in my experience. They also give a 5% discount on cash payments, so that worked out nicely. Travel time is the same price, so pay attention to how far they have to travel to you and to your new home (or in my case storage unit), but I would still use them again — only for the move of course.

I’ve used Nicky’s twice. The first time (Jan ’09), they were pretty good and reasonably priced. The second time (Nov ’09), they were the WORST movers I’ve ever had — and I’ve moved over 30 times in my life, so I know what I’m talking about!!!
The guy who gave me the original quote estimated the amount of time and people incorrectly; he also neglected to note my early start time. The movers showed up 20 minutes late the first day and an hour late moving day (and I moved to a condo with VERY strict elevator governances). The movers were also surprised to learn that my services included unpacking and to help them make the time; I helped unpack while they dumped stuff on the floor to get all the boxes out.
The final straw was when they lost the hardware for one of my bookcases and my guest bed. They’re coming today, two weeks later, to finish the job because they were unavailable last weekend. However, it was supposed to be finished by noon — it’s 12:30 and the guy called 20 minutes ago to tell me he only just got on his way.
Again, do NOT use this company if you want any type of accountability or responsiveness (did I mention that their pricing estimate was more the 20% off as well? — at least 10% of that is being refunded when I called to complain about this service). Nicky’s Moving is not a reputable agency and I’ll NEVER use them again!!!
