Gallery Godo

Not worth the cost of the entry fee, especially for emerging artists. Gallery is dirty and needs some TLC. I’m not convinced that Vaan does very extensive marketing to draw in buyers either. He’s a super nice guy, though.

This a great art gallery for students. You pay a hanging fee and Vaan throws a huge party for all your friends and family to see. There are snacks and a bar– great practice for the young artist. I knocked it 1 star because they don’t really seem to know much about or care about the quality of the art work they hang.

THE +‘s: it’s a HUGE gallery space that, for once, isn’t just one giant room. there are little hallways and little rooms just waiting for you to wander in. the gallery director (vaan) takes advantage of the nooks and crannies when arranging the art hanging so that, during a show, the nooks and crannies add to intimacy of viewing the art. or maybe i just have an overactive imagination.
from an exhibiting artist’s point of view, vaan’s great. he dots all the i’s and crosses all the t’s when it comes to preparing you for a show. generally very accessible through email and you can always find him at the gallery on the weekends. he recommended the printer i go to now (the printer guy’s just a few doors down from the gallery itself) and it really helps that they have a great working relationship.
THE -‘s: unfortunately, not everyone knows where this gallery space is. it’s next to a popular art school (and i think there’s another art gallery a few blocks down) but it’s not exactly in a well-​known art district.
SUM: it’s a great gallery that’s not-​yet-​quite-​discovered by the masses. spread the word. show opening nights are full of interesting people to talk to. if you’re artistically inclined, attend one of the friday night drawing sessions — there’re always loads of people there as well.
