My passion for native and Mediterranean plants began in 1993, landscaping for myself, friends and family on weekends and holidays. While maintaining a career in the music/​dvd industry where I served as Director of Customer Service as well as an International Special Packaging Director, I began the process of learning my grandfather’s successful landscaping business of 40 years. Upon his passing in 2001 I devoted myself to learning all I could about his business practices and design skills. In 2005 I devoted myself full time to his legacy and began promoting our native California environments practicality and beauty in landscaping.

This review is dreadfully overdue! We had a wonderful experience working with Rick and Shae when we embarked on «operation native landscape». We have a small front yard that was basic grass, and we wanted a full removal and to have the yard designed to be drought tolerant and dog friendly with all of the new plants. Rick has all of the knowledge on native plants (and we’re not talking the two succulents in the yard and sand covering the rest). He took so much time designing the plan, and then re-​designing as needed to fit our budget. We knew nothing about what to expect, and a few of the plants didn’t make it in the first 90 days. Rick came back, helped us adjust the watering schedule (these plants truly do not need much water. We had the the drip system set to 2x a week and it was too much!.. oops!), and he replaced all of the dead plants. The yard is now in full bloom, a haven for hummingbirds, butterflies, and honey bees. We love looking out our front window and we get compliments on our yard constantly. And last, but certainly not least, Rick and Shae are truly just awesome people to work with and chat with. I rarely hang out when people are doing work at my house, but I sat out front and talked to them every time they were there.

If you’re like me and have called numerous landscapers, even ones you’ve found on Unilocal,some of them didn’t even call you back. Brodey & Brodey was one of three who did. I went with Rick and Shae, as others have indicated, because they are talented, honest, and do what they say, at fair prices. They yanked out my front yard (three sections) of all grass and plants and replaced with a drought tolerant landscape that had no cactus, per my request. They also replaced my overspray sprinklers with a drip system.
The process was easy and started with Rick coming over to discuss what I wanted. He then returned with a packet consisting of a planting layout, completely coded to a series of colored photos of every plant he chose and then included alternative plants for me to consider. I could see that what he chose was based very carefully on what I told him I liked and didn’t like in plants and flowers, so he listened. I was cautious about committing before seeing what I was getting, so he and Shae met me and my husband at two different nurseries to see plants in person. Once settled, the crew came and in short order transformed my yard in a matter of days. We did experience a few delays due to personal reasons for Rick and to delays in plant deliveries, but at the end they came through and did what they promised. In addition, I didn’t get all tiny little plants like you see sometimes in a newly converted yard, but I got some very large, mature plants as well so from the very start my yard looks lovely. It’s only been a month and it’s already flowering all over. Very happy with the result and you will be too!

We hired Rick to overhaul our front and backyards. We went with Rick for two main reasons: he gave us a reasonable quote, and (more importantly) he struck me as a good and honest man. It turns out, he’s also incredibly talented at his job. My wife and I don’t know anything about landscaping — Rick helped us select a series of drought-​resistant plants, educated us about erosion prevention, made helpful suggestions about beautification, and ultimately designed a front yard that looks approximately 9000% better than it did before. Rick was extremely good at listening and responding to our specific wants and needs. On a personal level, Rick and his crew are terrific people. They worked extremely quickly and efficiently, while maintaining a very small footprint. But I wouldn’t be giving them a five-​star review were they not extraordinarily competent. There’s a reason why they have 99% five-​star reviews on this website. They’re that good.

When we decided to transform our large front lawn into a drought tolerant yard, we were surprised how few drought-​tolerant landscapers there were with positive reviews on Unilocal.Brodey and Brodey was among the few. We gave them a call and now we get to add our take. Rick and Shae are a great team, listening to our ideas and then doing it right with their talented team. We talked about having a mini-​Huntington Gardens, and that’s pretty much how it’s turned out. We often see walkers and even cars stopping to look at the yard, which sure didn’t happen when it was boring grass! We’ve been shocked by how fast the plants have grown and, with the few that didn’t take, they’ve been very responsive to replace them. Happy to add one more five-​star review!

We recently had Brodey & Brodey yank out the front lawn and replace it with a beautiful drought tolerant landscape with no cactus in sight! Shae and her team got the job done working in the nastiest summer weather. She gave us all the measurements and photos to allow us to get a turf rebate too. Her design united the whole yard and we now have a fabulous dry creek bed with lots of interesting plants. It’s been a month now and most plants are very happy. The few that aren’t will be replaced with their 90 day guarantee.
Another highlight is the old stone pond we had. Instead of filling it with water, Shae designed a succulent pond filled with dudleyas, echeverias and blue Mexican pebbles.
Of course with any construction there were a few hiccups along the way and any changes were handled very professionally. Can’t wait for them to work on the backyard!

After months of receiving wacky proposals and outrageous quotes on my small front lawn turf removal project, Shae arrives to the rescue– I was very happy to hire locally which was a bonus –She listened (very important these days) and plugged right in to the scope of the project and intuitively knew to deliver a design and choice of plants that complimented what we were looking for. Aside from a few bumps in the road – several miscommunications with crew on irrigation, timing, and project happening during a severe heat wave, plants in black containers being left to cook in the sun for several days then planted half dead, Shae responded promptly and took care of most issues and concerns and already replaced several plants — We absolutely love looking out at our new drought tolerant native garden already attracting hummingbirds and butterflies– They offer a 90 day replacement of plants that don’t make it and I have no doubt that Shae will be checking in to see how the garden established– it’s clear she takes pride in her work and wants her customers to be happy — you will not go wrong hiring Brodey & Brodey for your landscaping! Highly recommend!

I was looking to replace my front yard lawn with draught tolerant landscaping. Although I had a general idea of what I wanted, I had no idea as to what plants and hardscaping (i.e., gravel, rocks, stepping stones, etc.) I should use. To help me with my plan, I was lucky enough to find Shae Brodey of Brodey and Brodey Landscape Design. What a wonderful lady.
Shae was very creative in her design and extremely knowledgeable about landscaping and irrigation options. After hearing my plan and ideas, Shae was able to design and create a beautiful draught resistant Mediterranean gravel garden which integrated numerous colorful draught tolerant plants with beautiful gravel, boulders, and stepping stones. Shae patiently listened and worked very closely with me to make my plan come to life. She really pays attention to detail and obviously takes great pride in her work and finished products.
My new front yard came out AWESOME and I couldn’t be happier. I have Shae and her team to thank for that.
I highly recommend Brodey and Brodey Landscapes to anyone who needs professional and friendly help with their landscaping.

Thanks to Rick and Shea, we now have a beautiful drought tolerant front yard instead of a lawn. As a gardener I had some idea what I wanted, including certain plants, Rick worked with me on my list and added some suggestions of his own and came up with a lovely design. Rick has been back several times to replace a couple of plants that didn’t make it and to make a couple of changes that I requested. If you are looking to take out your lawn I suggest you give him a call.

Called and talked to Rick about replacing my little front lawn with dryscape landscaping. He came out and we thoroughly discussed possible options. He is very knowledgeable on plants, trees, and shrubs. He will give you plenty of suggestions and ideas if your looking for them. A few days later he sent me a sketched plan and pictures of all the possible plants we could try. The price was good and he was available during my week off. Ricks guys did a great job and recommended some helpful things as the worked progressed. They were quick and cleaned up well. After all the work was done I was very happy with the results. Rick is definitely worth an estimate if your considering landscaping at your home.

When I decided to re-​do my yard using drought tolerant and native plants I had no idea what was out there. I called Rick at Brodey & Brodey. Him and his staff were so knowledgable, accomodating, creative and very cost effective. He had wonderful ideas I never even thought of! His design included everything; irrigation, lighting, water features; it was a one-​stop shop! He also told me about the various incentives with the Power Companies for using these types of plants and his staff made the calls and helped me apply for them! My garden is lush, beautiful, colorful and I will have blooms all year around and I am now thoroughly educated in California Native Flora. He worked with me on the cost and kept on budget. He also completed it when he said he would! Because it was such a great experience I am planning on doing my back yard now. I would highly reccommend this company.

I was very pleased with the landscaping Rick Brodey did at our home. After asking me what I wanted he did a color design drawing and emailed photos of many plants to help us choose. He offered creative suggestions to do things I never would have thought of. His budget was clear and detailed. If we wanted work outside of the original plan he gave us cost estimates in advance so we could decide whether or not we wanted to add.
The plantings look wonderful and have survived well through heat & cold. He fixed our existing sprinklers, tweaking them several times until they worked well. Years ago my husband built a waterfall fountain which would never hold water. Rick rebuilt it so that it not only looks natural, it also works.
Rick Brodey was a pleasure to work with and we love the landscaping. We give him an unqualified recommendation.

Rick Brodey did an amazing job on my (very) challenging front hillside that was just dirt and rocks when I bought my house. We looked at native plants together and I told him what plants I preferred and what flower colors I’d like. He then created a drawing to give me an idea of what it would look like. I approved, and he went ahead and bought the plants and created a lovely front garden, with a path in the center so that I could tend to some of the hard to reach plants. It came out better than I ever imagined, and I get compliments all the time from the neighbors walking by. Some have even stopped and gotten out of their cars to tell me how beautiful it is. Rick worked very hard and kept within my budget. He’s very easy going and easy to work with. I highly recommend Brodey & Brodey for your landscaping needs.
