An Apple A Day Catering & Meg’s Cafe

Our organization recently had Apple A Day cater our holiday party, and everything was absolutely delicious. We had a kale salad that was unbelievably good, ham on the bone, turkey, coconut shrimp, chicken skewers, chicken quesadillas, miniature beef wellington, a cheese tray, crudités tray, and probably a few other things that I can’t recall right now. It was all excellent, as were the servers. We will definitely use them again.

What a marvelous restaurant with perfect, professional service. There was a good smattering of customers — before Glencoe Library’s lecture of the Field Exhibition on the Greeks from Agamemnon, and before the Writer’s Theater performance of «Marjorie Prime.» (otherwise, the north shore community is in free fall). Our group had the chicken pot pie which came with a healthy stalk of broccoli as well as a salad. The salads were fresh and tasty. Their wines are great… no vinegar-​like shlock. The chicken pot pie was a fresh-​baked pastry and filled —not just with sauce. One of us had a dessert, but we were so full. May I also say we were introduced to a mellow coffee, Rykoff-​Swanson which was as good as any dessert.

The soup here are beyond delicious the tomato bisque Rocks and the gumbo is to die for!
I would go there for the duck at dinner every night of the week but then I wouldn’t have room for the ratatouille. The tuna sandwich at lunch is the greatest in Chicago fresh moist and incredibly tasty.
The biggest challenges leaving room for the brownies or the cookies overall one of Chicagos hidden treasures. The team is welcoming warm and very efficient the owner is fun to talk and very knowledgeable she tops off the whole experience of a truly great time. Love love love apple a day and Megs café. My only question is if its Meg Café why is it owned by a woman named Barbara?

Very good food, service and reasonable prices. I would highly recommend. I the spring and summer months there is outdoors seating.

Another great foodie location. I stopped here for breakfast and had an omelet with salsa and a salad. This was a very pleasant experience. I hope they pay the workers a fair wage.

was in there for dinner the other night. It’s solid but not great and some things like the salad, bread and dessert seemed like they were not made to order and lacked freshness. The space however is wonderful, has great air especially in summer and the seating was fantastic. It’s also very well priced.

As a parent, it is hard to find restaurants that have food my children will actually eat. I love coming to Meg’s café because my kids are picky eaters and Meg’s always carters to their needs. They offer a wide variety of options (ex. Replace your side for fruit, roasted vegetables, roasted potatoes or their steamed vegetable of the day) and they have paper table covers and give your kids crayons to draw with. All in all, I will definitely be coming back!!!

Do Not Go If You Have Kids or Are Under 65! As a Glencoe resident, I enjoy eating out regularly in Glencoe area, sometimes with my husband, sometimes with just mom friends, sometimes with the kids. I eat with my kids anywhere from Foodstuffs to Guildhall, eat at nearby Prairie Grass, Zodiac, Café Buongiorno, and Happ Inn regularly, always have a pleasant experience, have never had a complaint myself, and regularly am complimented by the staff by my kids behaviour. I certainly recognize that there are appropriate times and places to have kids (ex, I would bring kids to Guildhall for Sunday brunch but certainly not Michael for a 7pm seating), as I myself expect an adult environment at a nicer place during the later evening. However, on my first and last trip to a casual Meg’s Café at 5pm on a Friday with my kids and a friend’s kids (where I figured we could eat and then meet my husband by the train station after work), I encountered an almost hostile environment. Meg’s was ¾ empty, but the other clientele were all elderly and literally glared just as we were walking in. We sat in the very back section as to be courteous to the other guests. The service was slow and while the kids were not perfect (but not being bad), until a woman (presumably the restaurant manager) came up and told us apparently «every guest» in the restaurant had complained about kids in the establishment. We instructed the kids only to whisper and left as soon as we could pay the bill, with half-​eaten food. I certainly understand if Meg’s wants to only cater to the elderly crowd, but then they should not misleadingly have a kids menu. I’m disappointed that such a convenient restaurant is no longer a viable option, but I certainly will not patronize (with or without my kids) an establishment that during an early evening hour and in a casual environment (both factors that typically make a restaurant kid-​appropriate) is rude, makes you feel embarrassed, and is not kid-​friendly.

We love megs café. My husband gets the lemon piccata chicken every time for dinner. I like their comfort food… they have great chicken pot pie. They have great meatloaf. They have great tomato bisque (and you can order a large container to go). For the kids menu, their chicken tenders are fit for an adult. It is real chicken breast freshly breaded with a delicate Panko crust. Much better then the heavily breaded deep fried variety that I have come to expect in kids meals. They also cut the grapes in half for the kids. (A small but appreciated detail). I never think of for a girlfriend dinner. Maybe if they did a fun thing like half price wine on Tuesdays or something like that, you would attract the mom set for dinner? Of course with the new writers theatre and your solid menu, I don’t think you will have problems filling your tables!

Meg’s Café in Glencoe is a favorite spot. Not cheap, but you are always assured of tasty entrees, and a good variety of those. Meg’s is slightly retro for those wanting tin roof ceilings, white table cloths, china and real flatware. Salad/​meat combinations are especially good, as are the desserts. Service too is friendly and not too pushy. Great carry-​out too if you want to eat at home. Highly recommended. For the person that rated Meg’s as «lackluster» and «mediocre» I’m wondering if we ate at the same place. Also, I agree with the reviewer who enjoyed the salmon burger.

Had a great salmon burger for lunch. It is homemade, they chop or grind the salmon in-​house. I have been here for lunch many times, and usually leave happy. Sitting outside when the weather allows is lovely.

Nothing special here. Nothing that popped out during my dining experience. Nothing that has stayed on my mind since leaving. The one thing I did enjoy was being able to sit outside on a gorgeous day. Otherwise the food was lackluster and the service was mediocre.

Meg’s Café? An Apple a Day? I’ve been confused by what their official name is ever since moving to Glencoe, but they can call themselves whatever they want as long as they continue making delicious tomato soup and tuna salad. I haven’t branched out from that combo in the half a dozen times I’ve been to Meg’s Café/​An Apple a Day because it’s that good.
This is a great spot for lunch (closed Sundays) when you’re looking for something a bit fancier than the other «order from the counter» spots in town. I recently took my kids for the first time on a Saturday. We not only scored a table for 7 people right away (whoo hoo), but the service was relatively fast and their kids meals were way better than what my kids normally eat. They went to town on their order of spaghetti and I couldn’t help, but steal some of their grilled cheese to go along with my favorite tomato soup.
I also recently learned that they are open for dinner. While it doesn’t look like my soup/​salad combo is on the dinner menu, it looks worth checking out.

On the way into the garden with the family, we decided to grab lunch somewhere near Glencoe. Our first option ended up being closed permanently, so we opted for Meg’s Café.
We walked in, and I thought… ooh. How very clean. It’s located in a wonderful walkable part of (what I think is) the Glencoe town center. Everything is trimmed nice, the inside is very white, it’s just nice and clean.
So what did I get? The fish tacos, of course. The risk paid off, and overturned my overall philosophy regarding fish tacos (before this, I thought they were an abomination before the Lord). With the right fish, blackened, good salsa and fresh vegetables, it turns out that fish tacos can taste good. And these tasted great.
My wife had a tomato bisque that was excellent. Smooth, bright and with just the right balance of tomato versus oil /​broth.
We finished things off with a couple of cookies from the bakery. It’s been 4 months so I don’t remember the exact flavors; I just remember they were as fantastic as the rest of the meal.
The best part about our lunch was that even though the café is surrounded by million-​dollar houses, lunch didn’t set us back an arm and a leg. Sounds good to me!
If you’re in the northern suburbs and looking for a great place to catch lunch, Meg’s Café is highly recommended.

A client raved about Meg’s Café so I stopped in to pick up some tomato soup. It was very good, but a little too creamy for my tummy. I would try their other soups in an instant. I had a cupcake, and no complaints there.
it looks like a slightly fancier place. I wouldn’t take a five year old there. I also think there’s no point getting a turkey sandwich (which a reviewer complained about) here when they cook so well! I’ve heard everything is great here.

I’m still wondering why the North Shore of Chicago still struggles to maintain anything other then mediocre restaurants. Case in point — Meg’s. This place wouldn’t survive 6 months in any urban locale. The only reason I can see that it’s survived so long in Glencoe is a) it’s clean, b) it’s food doesn’t taste bad, c) there is no viable alternative dining establishment in Glencoe. I view this as more of an indictment of the clientele in Glencoe then of Meg’s — why change if its working for you?
So here we go — the food is dull. The ingedients mediocre (I ordered a chicken dish which came topped with a canned pineapple ring — a crime that I believe was banned by the Geneva Convention), and the room was meh. Oh, and the service is slow and inattentive.
Nothing to see here, move along (to another place that will do more then put boring, bad food in front of you).
Pass.

Adorable décor, reasonable prices, fresh baked goods, great-​tasting food, and more than anything, phenomenal service.
I ordered the half-​soup half-​sandwich combo with the mushroom barley soup and the vegetable foccaccia sandwich. But sadly, they don’t do the half-​and-​half combo with the vegetable foccaccia! So I gave in and decided I’d take my extra half home.
But in the kitchen, they found out that another lady at another table also wanted half of the vegetable foccaccia. And instead of just making extra bank on us, they split the sandwich in half and gave one to each of us. So astute, so flexible, so willing and eager to please.
And I’m so glad they did… The sandwich tasted so good, I’m not sure I could have held back from eating the other half if it was on my plate! Good thing the mushroom barley soup was so earthy and delicious too. And the salad came with beets! What a great touch.
What a fantastically great experience in general.

Food like your mom used to make.
Actually, my mom doesn’t really cook anymore, so we went there while I was in town to enjoy a lovely meatloaf dinner, and a bowl of scrumptious butternut squash soup on a cold winter night. Homemade flavor, with just-​out-​of-​the-​oven fresh bread, and friendly service.
I went back on a weekday to enjoy their soup and sandwich special, the roasted chicken salad sandwich and the mushroom and barley soup. Great deal for $ 11 an the soup was absolutely delicious — I could survive on Meg’s soups as my only food source.
OH, and the muffins are delicious. The carrot muffin is my favorite, while my mom absolutely loves the chocolate, and the cinnamon one was great too. Be sure to get one to go for breakfast the next day.
Great little spot to enjoy a casual meal, without excess frills, and with an interior as bright and cheerful as the staff.
