Meet the Business Owner
Mark R.
Business Owner
The MBA was founded by Mark Russell, who is still the Academy’s Executive Director. He was trained by a well known mixoligist (Billy Warren) when he lived in California. After working his way through school with what he earned as a bartender, Mark returned to Maryland.
His goal was to teach students the same way he was trained — he realized that it was not enough to be able to pour a drink. A good bartender should know why he or she mixes a drink in a certain way — and why. There were plenty of other talents he wanted to pass on to rookie bartenders, and over the years, these skills became part of our curriculum. In 1980 he founded the Maryland Bartending Academy and received approval by the Maryland Higher Education Commission to open his academy. In 1981 his business became an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating and was selected as“exclusive” training facility for Maryland & DC area by Professional Bartending Schools of America.
