I took my car here and even though they were busy on a holiday weekend they fixed my car so i could have it for the next week. They did not charge me for unnecessary repairs. Rom was straightforward. I am taking my car here from now on. Fantasic service.

Called Rom’s when my husband (who works in Gilroy) experiences car troubles on his way to work. I called and spoke with Rom who said to bring it by whenever.
My husband did so later in the day and it ended up being a couple hour wait (this is fine, I don’t expect other customers to be dropped or moved behind me). But what was a little irritating to me was that the gentleman told my husband that if nothing came up on the diagnostic that he would not be able to give us an answer and we would have to take it elsewhere. – This is what ended up happening.
I guess no major complaints but it was inconvenient for us.

Rom has yet to let me down with my oil changes, I have 2 vehicles so I visit here every so often and let him do in 30 mins what I used to dread and it works out for me time wise. He manages to squeeze me into his schedule as long as I call a day before and the only thing you have to be clear with him on is the quality of oil it can be a 30 Unilocal buck difference so I make sure the vehicle being service gets what it deserves. Haven’t had any major engine work done but I would definitely consider if it were needing to be done.

Great service! Great Price. ROM himself is a standup guy. got my timing belt replaced on my vw golf for a great price and in a timely manner. car runs smooth! Recommended for anyone in and around the area.

I have taken several cars there to be repaired, and I have never had a problem, and thought they were quick, good, and reasonable. I have even recommended them to friends. But I brought my truck in because the engine light came on, and they said it was the rotor cap, and they straightened it out. Then, two weeks later, the engine light comes on, and the engine breaks down. Now, the truck needs a new engine. We had it towed up to San Jose where the owner and mechanic thinks they are responsible for the damage to the engine. I don’t know what to think because I’m not a mechanic. Now, so far, it has cost us 3.500.00. I just seems to me to be too much of a coincidence that it happened so soon after they worked on it. Too bad because this place was convenient to go to.

i will never go here again. now do i recommend anyone to go here. i used to go here all the time before because the guy did great work for a cheap price. i had my car towed here from hollister because the front right control arm snapped on me one day. (such bad luck) i took my own parts from oreileys and it was all hell from there. first oreileys gave me mis mtached parts. they gave me the front right upper control arm and front left lower control arms. so instead of the rom shop telling me that it was mismatched parts, he put it on and let me drive off like that. i remind you i live in hollister so i could have died on the way home. i took it to another shop in hollister because i heard rattling. they told me about the mismatched parts. so i called back roms shop and he said thats what i get for taking mismatched parts. he said he will put anything on becuase i didnt let him get the parts. i have always taken my own parts and no problem before. the new shop told me he forced the parts to fit together and one was upside down to fit. so i had to repay someone else to take off the wrong parts, i had to run back to oreileys (all on a borrowed ride and i had to pay them for gas cause my car was occupied) and get new parts and pay someone again to put the new parts back on. horrible experince.

Do not I repeat do not go to this place! I took my car in for a head gasket fix on a Honda, Raul the owner said it was going to be 1500 $ so I gave him 2 weeks w/​the car so that i could get the money together. 2 weeks later and the day I get the car back the check engine light goes on! Also come to find out there is a cap missing under my hood and things are loose and not in place! I take it back and he says it’s fine and orders a new cap and resets the check engine light. Then the next day again the light comes on! He tightens more stuff and apologizes. Then a day later my car is having trouble on the highway! I had to pull over and be towed because my car had no go, so I take it back A THIRD TIME, and says something else is wrong that he will fix it, I get my car back LASTNIGHT and I’m still having the same problem with the car having no go, and the check engine light comes on AGAIN. The problem with my car seemed worse after he «fixed «then before he fixed it. I take my car back for a FOURTH time and he comes to tell me that he needs to order a new part for the car and that I have to pay for it after paying him 1500 $?! I don’t think so. I will never EVER do business at this place again. Beyond unprofessional.

I’m pissed at myself for not coming here sooner. My front brake pads needed replacement and I took it to meineke. They tried to push over $ 800 worth of work on me, part of that being $ 233 JUST to replace the front pads. When the rear brakes started squealing I looked on Unilocal and found Roms. I’d passed it all the time but thought it was sort of grungy compared to other places. Don’t be fooled like I was!

Honest and fair. Helpful in a stressful situation!

We had a slight emergency and unfortunately the timing could’ve been better considering their hours. Closed at 3 on Saturday and closed Sunday. Considering that we lived in Santa Cruz and quite a ways away from home, we had to be rescued. But first thing Monday morning the took care of us and were on our way back. Totally cheaper than what I was expecting to my delight. Shady place, but legit. Totally legit.

I needed to get my check engine light fixed before making a road trip. I checked Unilocal for a decently-​rated auto shop in the area and this one caught me eye. The stars are all worth it. I was able to bring my car in immediately and retrieve it very quickly. Turns out the thermostat needed replacement and all I was charged for was labor! Very cheap, but very good quality job. Will definitely be taking my car back here when it needs further work.

Rom was a real stand up guy. He gave me a estimate that was real good for a timing belt. I went someone else for the sand estimate and was being charged an arm and a leg. I went back to Rom and he took care of my timing belt for 600. Great guy, very honest and real good work. I recommend this guy to anyone.

I was looking for a place to bring my car and so I asked someone I knew would know where to get the best service cheap. He recommended Roms and I pulled in and was a little sketched but the guy with the gnarly scar was really friendly laughing and joking.
They did a timing belt on my car with water pump ect for just about $ 500. My friend got the same repair done at a different shop on almost identical cars for $ 900+ the repair came with a warranty and I’ve never had an issue with them or the work they’ve done. I recommend them to anyone needing some repairs done

Raul auto shop is for excellent car repair job, reasonable charges & very honest person. Live long and proove your honesty.

I hadn’t taken a car to Roms because even though I live in Gilroy I work in Salinas and now started taking my car to a coworker who also happens to have his own shop just down the street from where I work. Well after getting a price quote to replace rear brake pads I decided to take my car to Roms to see how much they would charge to do work. Well not only was he going to charge about $ 50 less to do work, the mechanic found that the pads were still 80% good and really just needed a good cleaning because there was so much dust/​dirt buildup. From now on I will never take my vehicles to any one else other then Raul/​Roms auto.

I agree with the other reviewers that the ambience is not the greatest.
They did a great job replacing both electric fuel pumps on my 15 year old F150. They went out of their way to replace only what was required, not simply swapping out the complete assembly like a dealer would. In the end the truck runs great and he saved me a lot of money. On time, under budget, quality repairs delivered here.

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, at about 6 pm, my car broke down outside Gilroy on a trip down to Monterey. The car started chugging, and then finally just died. I had visions of having to have it trucked to San Francisco for repairs, but the tow truck driver recommended Rom’s. I am very glad he did. Rom’s is open generally until 8 or 9 in the evening.
Rom’s, located on Monterey Avenue just northwest of the 101, is a 30– year auto business which is a classic garage — it is not fancy, it is far from immaculate, does not have mood music, nor a designer waiting room. Rom’s has parts and tool bins everywhere, and comprises a quarter block. It also has a great mechanic who can repair all makes of cars.
You can tell that the owner loves to work on cars. He gives a year warranty on his work.
My car’s chugging and break down was quickly diagnosed as a bad fuel pump, and an OEM pump was ordered that night. The car was ready as promised the next day. All the problems have been resolved.
We met many locals in the Monterey area who stated their cars have been repaired at Rom’s, and he is the person to go to with problems other mechanics cannot resolve. He apparently is recognized as a trouble shooter by local dealers. If we were not more than 100 miles away, we would use him exclusively.

He diagnosed a hard to find emissions problem that the dealer (Bob Lynch Ford) couldn’t find — indeed, the dealers service manager gave me the hard sell for a new motor!!!
And another repair shop on 5^th St insisted that the rough idle was ‘normal for 6 cylinder engines’ — that might be true for a v-​6 but a straight 6 is inherently balanced — any gearhead worth his salt knows that! I kept looking, and asking around — on a recommendation of a retired county sheriff I tried Roms — WOW!
Like the previous reviewer said, don’t be put off by the looks — it’s as messy as my garage (which the car never sees), but his mechanics hustle!
He only accepts cash & credit cards, but the total bill for a rebuilt head & labor was waay less than I expected!

Don’t be put off by the look of the building, this is, hands down, the best auto shop in the greater SF bay area. They are fast and friendly and my entire family has never had an issue with the quality of their work in the decade we have used them for all our needs. My only comment is that they are busy and you’ll need to call them for your status updates, they will take a bit to call you back as they are focused on getting the cars done. That’s a small price to pay for the fastest and best service we’ve ever had anywhere.
