Gilroy Hobby

This is a huge location for all types of collectibles. Mostly older stuff and toy race cars. That seems to be what is keeping this place alive.
Their comic selection is very sparse and mostly issues you already own or don’t need. Mostly older stuff, so call in advance if you’re looking for something in particular. Still, it’s a HUGE location with a lot of space. You could take all day here.
Still, not the greatest collectible location, but it does have heart, which is why I’m giving it four stars versus three.

Drove all the way from Gonzales, CA. Was planning on buying a few rc cars for the kids. Business was Closed! Closed! Closed an hour before closing time.

been there only 2x. got a great price on a historical collectible. guy was nice. most other reviews seem like kids with no patience and attitude way beyond their pay grade. this guy has a lot of plastic models unavailable elsewhere and if he lets you open them to confirm contents that is beyond friendly. ebay wont let you list kits as new that are new if they are openned so he is being very generous doing
ignore the petulant teenage angst reviews and reserve that behavior to the teen in the white house.

One of the last big Hobby stores. Lots of inventory and for the most part very knowledgeable. I would give it 5 stars but the ladies that are there on weekdays really don’t know much and are a little rude. The owner is a nice fella though.

I really don’t get why their getting such bad reviews. We went in there and the guy helping us was going out of his way to help us look for parts and they had a lot of RC parts too. I have a Traxxas and they had like 2 full aisles of just Traxxas parts. They have absolutely nothing at SRS Hobbies. Closest thing to monterey that actually has anything in stock.

Just called them looking for a Mamba Monster 2 motor/​controller. Girl puts me on hold for few minutes, comes back and tells me, «yeah, we have it». I ask how much and she says $ 229. This is much lower than everyone else so, I start asking more questions. She insists it is correct and I am ready to hang up so I can drive to Gilroy from San Jose to get a great deal. I ask if it’s the 2200kv and she says, «well it’s actually a Sidewinder which is the same thing». I tell her they are 2 completely different items and she insists they are the same. Wow. Just wow is all I can say. I’ve never been there and will never call them again.

Gilroy Hobbies is large and expanding! It has an impressive collection of comics, vintage toys, vintage model cars (and planes, spacecraft, buildings, army men, etc.), RC cars, some collectible cards, a few weapons, parts, a repair area and, soon, a racing and testing track. Wow! It does not have Dungeons & Dragons and other hobbies like that, though. Even so, it’s an awesome place. The owner is a bit gruff but pleasant enough. Check it out!

Ok I’ve been going there for a while and there was a mexican dude that always wore motocross jerseys that always helped me and he was great. Now there’s a dude with a big gotee (sp) that is a total idiot. They act like they’re doing us such a favor by staying open. The owner bill is freakin slob. I can’t stand this place. The other day I went in there and it looked like a daycare… ridiculous. Trying to even get their attention to receive their crappy service is a hassle. I’m gonna start going to sheldons up in san jose from now on. Hope ur place tanks…

Times are tough nowadays at Gilroy Hobby. The stores gotten smaller with them selling off their remaining portions to the store to cover losses… With all of these losses, they finally got some more tamiya model paint. You’d think I’d be happy for that? WRONG.
For one small jar of tamiya paint, Gilroy Hobby was asking double then most other stores ask for. I was fine paying a few cents more if it meant I could support a local busisness/​get some new paints to experiement with, but this is totally bull! I will gladly take my business to D & J or Hobbytown for ANY of my modeling needs!!!

I’m at a bit of a loss when it comes to this place. It is huge still despite them slowly selling off parts of their floor space to other businesses.
I guess it depends what you’re looking for, they had the RC part I was after so that was good however the prices for the used cars they have in their cabinet are a bit much if you ask me. But they are entitled to ask whatever they want for them. As the pawn stars guy always says people can ask whatever they want for something but that doesn’t mean theyre getting it.
Anyways, they do have a fair amount of RC parts, car, truck, plane, and boat. They also have a decent selection of models and model paints. In addition to a giant wall of random collectible doo dads and nic-​naks. From my last trip there it looks like they sold off a large selection of their comics as well as airsoft.
I would be remiss if I did not mention that I do cringe every time I drive in the parking lot. I fear for my tires lives, it just seems like a place where you might get a nail screw or glass in your tire.
I’ll always check here for RC parts before ordering online because I am a man of instant gratification.
Also if you’re looking for a used car lot, there is one outside, there is a salon/​haircut place inside the door, and also now a furniture store. So bonus for variety I guess.

This place is a shithole. I went to Andy’s Hobby Shop (small but wonderful) looking for an RC car but they did not have it. I called down to Gilroy Hobby and asked them if they had the SC10 4×4, repeatedly, and they said did, repeatedly. So I drive a half hour out of my way to go pick it up, and it was not there. There was no 4wd, 2wd, gas motor, brushless motor, or any other type of SC10 was there, they straight up lied to me.
The attitude of the workers here is «Fu*@ You.» Neither worker acknowledged my presence in their enormously empty store, even after I said hello. They didn’t apologize for being too lazy to actually look it up, or for me having to drive an hour out of my way (round trip) for nothing. Walking out the door, they had wasted my time and money because they were too lazy to check their inventory, and made one thing very clear: they don’t want my business.
This place is creepy and I wish I could rate it less than 1.

Don’t waste your time. Went there twice and it was closed even though the posted hours on the door said they should be open. Wasted trip.

This is a Great Hobby shop for RC Cars Planes Models etc. The do a great Job of making sure the customer is taken care of. It is nice to get that one on one attention.

This place looks like super sketch, it’s a car dealership, a subpar hobby shop, and a hair salon? Like what the hell.

Great Selection of R/​C Planes, good customer service. They seem to be remoldling the store.

I just came from here. The crew was helpful and gave me good advise about fixing up an older rc car. The owner provided good friendly service. They had the parts I needed in stock.

The places is gross, Everythings out of date & the guy who owns it is crude.

The focus of this place is plastic models and RC Trucks.
They have the largest collection of plastic models kist I have ever seen — and some of it os old, old, old.
They seem to have a good stock of RC Truck /​buggy stuff — but I’m not into RC Trucks.
When they first opened as a hobby shop (maybe it was different owners) they converted the roller skating rink into a carpeted RC car race track — it was seriously FAST! — and there was a dirt track out in front with a seriously FUN off road track.
Now, the indoor track is slowly turning into action figures and open stockroom /​storage /​pool tables and the outdoor track is turned into a used car lot (which went out of business).
I’m glad to see they are able to hang in there, but there have been days when I go in and there is 1 person sitting at the cash register and no one is around to help. And maybe 3 people at the video games.
