History
Established in 1980.
Railroad Art by Scotty presents the custom matted and framed collector Railroad Art Prints by renowned railroad artist H.L. Scott, III. These are not photographs and they are not created on the computer. These are pen & ink drawings created by Scott using the technique known as STIPPELING or pointillism. It is the process of creating a drawing using only tiny dots of ink. They’re all done by hand, every single tiny dot. Scotty creates these illustrations working through a magnifying glass and using a 0.18mm Rotring technical drawing pen. Only one size of pen is used so the density of the dots causes the change in tone. Each drawing is done on acid free illustration board. Each art print of Scott’s highly detailed pen and ink drawings of trains and railroad equipment is available in a variety of frame combinations.
All railroad art prints are embossed with Scott’s signature to assure authenticity.

Technical accuracy and attention to detail are the strongest characteristics of Scotty’s style. The sharp contrasts and delicate shading create in the viewer the same excitement that Scotty feels for his trains. Scotty’s works have been avidly collected ever since the release of his first of the Southern Pacific caboose #1212 in 1987. His works, including historic American railroads, short lines, narrow gauge and modern diesel equipment, are available through The Train Stores and he also displays them at railroad and art shows throughout the nation. During his travels Scotty frequently spends time at trackside photographing equipment and adding to his photo collection which is the basis for his drawings.
Each original piece of artwork is painstakingly created using pen and ink. Working under a magnifying glass, Scotty uses a very fine pointed technical drawing pen and a process called pointillism. This involves many thousands of dots of ink and no lines to complete a drawing.
