I love Urban Fitness! It’s always sparkling clean inside and has plenty of equipment to choose from. It may seem a little small inside, but offers everything you need to accomplish your goals!
The owners and staff are super friendly as well!
You can choose from several types of memberships or pay a daily fee if you are visiting the island. They offer personal training if needed and classes are available at the other location (Total Fitness) if you want group exercise. The equipment is new and always working. Overall, it’s the best gym in Galveston!

I pretty much grew up in Galveston, frequently spending 3 – 4 months every year spending time with my family, so I know the city and the people like the back of my hand. Everyone has always been really friendly to me, and many of the same businesses that were here when I was coming up remember me and I always really nice.
I expected the same kindness and service when I went to select a gym during my summer stay. I love the convenient location on Post Office down the street from my job, and moreover I was taken in by the gorgeous facility inside the brown stone. It was well kept from the equipment to the bathroom and gorgeous.
I was hooked, so I asked the lady at the desk for a tour before I signed up. I REALLY wish I remembered her name, because she was really the only nice thing I have to say about the gym aside from it’s appearance. I explained to her I wanted to get back into shape after years of inactivity during a sports injury. She gave me a tour, and was extremely friendly as well as informative explaining all the membership types and services.
I decided to sign up for a one month membership due to the short stay I had and full time job. I like to do cardio outside, so I wanted the gym mostly for the weights, space and machines. I figured I would just use day passes until I left Galveston. I paid cash so I received my month membership for $ 55 which was great, I got my keychain, and since I came from work wearing a dress with no change of clothes, I went home.
During my membership purchase, I EXPRESSLY made it clear that I wanted a Beginners orientation because they had machines I was not familiar with and I did not want to hurt myself. My first session in, I asked about it and a very disinterested man at the desk just asked me for my name, and looked it up, and from what I could see, he did nothing else. I went in about 3 more times asking about my beginners session, and again informing them I wanted one. They kept ignoring my or not informing their boss of my request because I never received an email or attempt to schedule a time.
What pissed me off the most was that after being a member for 3 weeks and constantly asking about my training session, none of the staff seemed to care that I wasn’t being helped!!!
On the last day I decided to be bothered with this place, I was completely frustrated. I decided to get in once last workout and cut my losses. If I went at least 5 times in the month, it was at least the same cost as 5 day passes.
I know it’s a gym, but the environment was so unfriendly and I think the management should really focus on meeting the needs of new members. I feel like once I paid my membership I was forgotten. Or maybe because I only bought I month, they didn’t feel I mattered since I never got the services I asked for. Even worse I NEVER saw the owner to be able to talk to him. I understand he owes Total Fitness on the Seawall Blvd as well, and to be honest considering classes are held there and it’s bigger, it probably gets all his attention, and Urban Fitness is just a maintained facility rather than a health club for those who want help in their fitness journey.
I would give this place 1 star, but the facilities were nice and the woman who gave me the tour is an excellent employee. She is attentive, sweet, and friendly. I don’t remember her name, but she often wears a baseball cap and she is the nicest person I met there. If you do join, she can help you, but other wise I wouldn’t bother
