This is not a freebie, but an actual community newspaper«serving Rancho Cordova, Gold River & Mather» for 50 cents a pop. It deals mostly with local matters that include school district decisions, crime in the area, park openings, church listings, community fundraisers and the like. I haven’t determined whether it contains either a liberal or conservative bias, but senior citizens issues, local sports, and church goings-on do appear to predominate. A tip of the hat to their curmudgeon columnist, Bob Ling, whose tongue-in-cheek humor is at times so absurd, that it is hard to tell whether he is criticizing, satirizing, spitting venom, or spinning sarcasm in the course of his narrative. Check him out on the online version( ) and you’ll see what I mean. Two quickie excerpts from recent columns(probably even more inflammatory taken completely out of context): «…I think I will take up drinking sewage and that chemical waste we’ve heard so much about. What the heck, if whiskey and gin can keep you from getting a heart attack or a stroke, just imagine what a little asbestos can do for your system. „ “…but you have to admit there is a a certain ‘consistency’ to administering punishment to a person who kills an unborn baby simply because to permit its birth would create an inconvenience — much the same as that darn neighbor’s dog that barks at night, wee-wees on your lawn and tips over your garbage can on collection night.» The Greater Rancho Cordova area never fails to confuse and delight newcomers, from its glorious Highway 50 corridor and random retail establishments to its eclectic little community rag, the Grapevine Independent.
