Coleman’s Shady Rest

Great food, excellent (albeit relaxed) service, and huge portions.
We happened upon this restaurant on a picturesque bend between Portland and the Oregon coast. The servers are incredibly friendly and the as-​big-​as-​your-​face cheeseburgers, rib eye steak special (with amazing mashers and gravy), and coconut pie are fantastic. Did I mention the clam chowder? Very tasty. We enjoyed it so much, we stopped on our second trip to pick up family from the airport.

Good food but it took 40 minutes to get our food, presumably because of planning /​scheduling missteps with Father’s Day brunch. ANYWAY, great clam chowder… the highlight of the stop. Friendly hard working servers.

I have been to this little place many times in the past. And as always a milk shakes and burger are what I’m looking for, the food is always great, but today it seems particularly tasty. so I wonder to myself what’s different? the meat seems the same great the vegetable as always fresh. then I noticed a huge long hair viking of a man standing in the kitchen. Now I don’t know if he’s the reason for the taste
asking some of my fellow patrons if the food seemed different a few said yes so it must be the new guy. well if so I hope they keep him.

Best cheeseburger I’ve had in a long time. WOW!!! Along the highway in the middle of nothing. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food. Definitely a «burger joint» and super casual. Service friendly and on point. Husband had open faced roast beef with mashed potatoes that looked amazing. Definitely homemade potatoes. Just can’t say enough good stuff about this place. Will definitely stop by again. :)
The only reason I didn’t give a 5 is because there was a lot of side work that hadn’t been done garbages were all full, dirty dish container was full. I just assumed they must have been busy earlier in the day.

Excellent, friendly atmosphere for date night or family night. Great food. Very clean. The waitresses Jamie & Carol are excellent and go the extra mile. It’s open Wednesday-​Sunday for lunch & dinner. Wishing it was open early for breakfast. This used to be Bonanza Restaurant owned by the Platt’s «in the day» & it was excellent then, too, but open nearly all the time. For us, going to Bonanza/Coleman’s is like the TV show, Cheers. Everyone knows your name, even if it’s your second time. ;) Highly recommend. Good wheelchair access as well. Also 4 – 6 happy hour is great.

This place is along HWY 6 about half way between Portland and the Oregon coast. It’s a fun place to break the drive into 2 ~40 mile segments if you (like me) don’t really like driving forever.
The food is decent and the service is fun. I have tried the pie here a couple of times and the pie is made in house and is quite large. it’s tasty, but a tad too sweet for me. I prefer a more complex and less simply sweet taste. It’s not bad, but I think it could be better.
Their hamburger breakfast entre (think steak and eggs, but with hamburger) had nice eggs and nice sides, but the burger was plain. a little salt and pepper in the cooking would have really stepped this place up from ok to nice.
I have also been here on special occasions (valentines day and the like), and they do have a really fun atmosphere. I almost wonder if they would be more successful if they had the fancier and more fun food all the time instead of just upon special occasions. They do a good job, but only have those menu items on special days.
In the end, this is a place that I like to stop on during the long drive, but it could be improved easily I think.

don’t bother to eat here their anti gun they have a sign on the door that says no open carry their anti Constitution as well don’t spend your money here if you are an American that’s for sure. Plus the food there is gotten really bad on top of that the waitress wrote on her hand instead of using a real ticket. Real classy. And in the men’s room urinal has it worked for me I don’t know how long

Massive portions of great burgers and tasty homemade chili verde.
An unexpected delightful find on the Wilson River Hwy.

We stopped here on our way home from the beach and I was pleasantly surprised. I had the Backyard Burger which was excellent! It had bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce and onion rings. I ordered the small (¼lb beef vs the large ½lb) and it was large! My boyfriend had the Southwestern Philly and said it was awesome! The difference in giving them a 4 vs a 5 was their fries. They were frozen crinkle cut fries out of a bag. It was a little disappointing that they had so-​so fries with a great burger! None the less, I would definitely come back.

As you round a corner off Hwy 6, after Banks, you’re surprised with a red building that you could nearly miss, and shouldn’t. We’ve been to Coleman’s a dozen times and have always enjoyed ourselves. This time, we split the large Charlie Burger — with bacon, avocado, Swiss (though we swapped for cheddar). The burger was the perfect size to split between two people who weren’t starving, but it definitely filled us up. Very juicy burger, and mixing that with bacon/​avocado was delicious. I also enjoyed their root beer milkshake. This is the kind of place that gives you the extra milkshake in the silver mixing cup, that makes you feel like you got a refill even though you didn’t. Yeah, that’s the best way to do a milkshake. They also had several flavors to choose from. Great time as always, Coleman’s!

This was one of our favorite places, but the last few times the service has been awful. And the limited hours during the week, and being closed Monday and Tuesday, we have been found other places like the Log Cabin just down the road and the Screaming Chicken in Gaston. Both have great breakfasts.
The last visit there it took twenty minutes just to have someone to take our order, and the food was mediocre at best. My wife bacon omelet the bacon was like the bacon bits that come in a bag. I ordered a mushroom, onion and green pepper omelet and got tomatoes and mushrooms, no onions or peppers. Think we’re done with this place.

I had been here back in around 2008 and they used to have a breakfast buffet that was to die for, on Sunday mornings. Well– no more. Went here on Sunday, 02/​23/​2014 and was sadly disappointed,. Not only do they no longer have the breakfast buffet on Sunday (which is why I had gone there with my son and my boyfriend) — but the food is MAYBE ok– if that. I asked for an omelet with ham, cheese, and tomatoes… the tomatoes were STEWED CANNED TOMATOES– not fresh. That just is not cool! Maybe a new cook is needed?

Stopped here on a boys weekend to the beach. Have driven past so many times and never thought to stop because it looks like a greasy spoon from the outside. I was pleasantly surprised when I got inside. Though old and in need of an update it was clean and felt like someone still cared if it was.
The food was the biggest surprise. WOW, who would have thought it. I had a burger that was without a doubt the best I have had in years. The rest of the guys enjoyed their food as well. My burger had bacon, ham, pepperoni, and who knows what else.
Definitely take the time to stop at this gem in the woods.

Fun change for burgers and great ‘comfort’ food. Had dinner here on a Saturday evening; nice to get right in. House wine is David Hill, a good choice, and there are beers on tap as well. The meatloaf was great; the baked potatoes are loaded (like the addition of bacon ‘bits’.) The prime rib was a bit disappointing as it didn’t have much flavor.

This wonderful diner is a GEM! Stop here by chance the first time a few months ago and this is our return trip. We ordered the Country Egg Benedict and the Chicken Steak breakfasts. And both are soooo good. Also, there’s no humongous line, which is awesome when one is famish!

I describe it as a typical American Café. You could pick it up and place it most anywhere in the Country and you would find people who love it and people who don’t.

Large Menu Selection of All American Food Items including things that sounded like Ozzie and Harriet would eat. Tater tots as a layer of a casserole, can’t remember which one, but it sure sounded very 50’s.
Entertaining descriptions on some of the items, such as the Tractor Pull, I don’t know anyone who would eat it but the description was very entertaining. I believe it included 2 plus pounds of Hamburger Patties and cost $ 32, but it would surely feed a family of 4 –6 and included fries.
Easy parking.
Plenty of seating options.

My friend enjoyed her Prime Rib, Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans.

It’s not my kind of place.
It’s a bit of a challenge for me to write a review about a place that I would not choose to go. I joined my friend who needed to run some errands at the coast. This is where we stopped on the way back into Portland. I was highly entertained by the menu. None of the food is the kind I like, but that was my problem, not the Restaurants.
I just don’t do Iceberg Lettuce Salads, White Bread or Tater Tots. But if you love these American staples, you might really enjoy Coleman’s Shady Rest. You won’t leave hungry and the prices are fair.

Used to be really good, not anymore! Guess if all you like are pretty much burgers. Used to be our Friday night dinner heading to our beach house. 10.00 for soup and salad (iceberg lettuce at that). They served many different foods, lots of home cooked favorites. Now burgers. Wow what a disappointment! Won’t be back.

This place was great. We stopped on our way to the coast for brunch/​lunch. All 4 of us loved the food. They have a great variety of sandwiches, a few breakfast items and some amazing chile verde nachos– more roasted pork and chile varde then nachos but it was wonderful. All of our meals were around $ 10 and all of the meals were easily 2 – 3 times what any of us could eat (and we aren’t light eaters).

I tend to hate promoting my favorite places because they tend to get known, then I can never get in with out a wait. This one is safe at least till summer. Coleman’s is literally in the middle of nowhere on the way to somewhere. If you take hwy 6 (the S branch of hwy 26 on the way to the coast) when you get to milepost 41 you’ll find it. It is 20 miles west of 185^th, and well worth the drive.
Though the menu is a good deal of burgers, there are enough other options to satisfy everyone up to and including vegetarians. I’ve had the Tillamook Hot Brown which was so rich my eyes crossed, the
Elvis which channeled him well, the veggie burger Rueben which satisfied me no end. The mashed potatoes are great, the fries fresh and crisp, the deserts mostly out of this world, and homemade. The chef does a truly outstanding job of doing down home county cooking and giving it a twist.
Why only 4 stars you’re asking? Simple, it’s too damn far away to go more often.
