Best Western Designer Inn & Suites

Second time staying here. Stayed in the Hearts delight this. Really nice! Bed could be updated but it was fine. Used the pool this time and got up early enough for breakfast! A very good selection of breakfast and fresh! Check in is so fast and friendly and you can check in early! So almost a full 24 hr stay! It was great!

They let me check in early when I was totally exhausted! Very friendly and a nice room. Whirlpool tub and fireplace. Very good breakfast. A little undercooked, especially the bacon. But easily cooked in the in room microwave. Clean but could be a bit cleaner. Housekeeping forgot a thing or two. I stayed 5 days and tipped well. I have no major complaints. I’ve stayed many times and would stay again. Beds very comfy. Worth the upgrade to suite.

Thought we were in trouble here as booked online through Expedia as it said the hotel was pet friendly. Had an email from Expedia saying didn’t need to call the hotel everything was taken care of. Be warned though we had a dog with us and as it turned out I should have called coz they didn’t keep a ‘dog’ room free for us. Anyway the receptionist was brilliant she let us have a room anyway that wasn’t for dogs as our old pug wasn’t going to ruin anything and we are pretty strict about him being on the furniture or bed. She even gave us a room on the ground floor as he can’t climb stairs. All in all thanks to her kindness our weekend turned out fun after all. Hotel is as expected nothing special but clean and tidy and the room was a nice size with a balcony. Breakfast wasn’t anything special either but again pretty much as expected for this type of hotel. Overall no complaints but high praise for the receptionist on duty.

This hotel has a few pros and cons.
It is located in a very convenient area if you want to go to downtown Galena. Their theme rooms are SPECTACULAR!!! Breakfast is pretty good and the staff is friendly. The pool and spa are great as well! Nicely priced rooms as well.
Cons– if you want to use the doors on the bottom floor to get in and out of tour room DON’T. We got locked out this way. There is no elevator (upstairs, main & downstairs). We found dead bed bugs once, but were moved and upgraded.

What can I say, I knew we were rolling the dice with a 2 ½ star on Priceline. On previous visits to Galena I’ve gotten the country inn and suites or the Ramada inn both 2 ½ star property’s.
To set the scene Galena is not exactly a bound with high-​quality lodging options. there are a few resort options and lots of bed-and-breakfast’s two night stay required… Hotel or motel wise it’s pretty slim. This best western certainly made the Country Inn and Suites seem like a five star!
The rooms, single Queen bed? 20 yards from the highway. The room reeked of smoke. The bed sucked it was at least 20 years old with a huge dip in the middle.
To say that it didn’t meet my expectations is an understatement. I would gladly pay more to stay elsewhere.
They should burn this place down and start over!

Dont let the outside fool you!!! Very nice quaint hotel. We stayed in a king whirlpool suite for 2 nights over NYE. Close to downtown, nice clean rooms and friendly staff. We had a great time! The only thing lacking was the breakfast, decent as far as hotel breakfast but nothing special. We would stay again anytime!

Do not stay here if you actually want to get some sleep. I could hear the person next door snoring. I could hear the upstairs people running around all night. The room was clean, but nothing fancy. The room was overpriced. The pillows were old worn feather pillows.

This hotel was fabulous! My boyfriend and I had plenty of space in our room to move around and the fireplace and whirlpool were perfect! The staff even hooked us up with a little anniversary surprise. Will be back.

All in all, good place to stay. I hate the price games hotels play though, I always end up feeling like I got the short end of the stick. I pay 170 but the walk in gets it for 99… WTF! Cuz I plan my trip and make a reservation, I get poked hard on the back side? Come on! That pisses me off. Only for that I give the 2 stars.

We stayed in the Crystal Cave room and thought it was great! From the outside of the hotel, it looks slightly run down, but they are going through a renovation so that was slightly expected. The room was very clean and very unique. I was nervous that the room would be slightly cheesy and tacky but it was a great experience. The continental breakfast was lackluster but better than normal dry cereal and fruit. I would stay here again for sure! Staff was fantastic and made us feel welcome.

I would actually give it 4−½ stars if I could. It’s not the Ritz, but I didn’t expect it to be. The price is very reasonable, and our stay was great. Price was an issue for us, so we booked the lowest price queen room, and on arrival we were upgraded to a king leisure suite. The room was quite large, with a comfortable sitting area, very clean with a comfy bed. Desk staff was friendly and helpful. Our only minor complaint was the size of the bathroom. Very little space to put things, so many items (curling iron, electric razor etc.) had to be stored in the bedroom. It would only require a small investment to add a shelf in the bathroom. Apparently they used to have a continental breakfast, but now they have a full hot breakfast, which was better than I would have expected. A typical day had scrambled eggs, sausage, French toast, assorted breads and pastries, cereals, juice, make-​your-​own waffles etc. On our next Galena trip we will definitely stay here again.

Tried the «Cave Suite» for a new twist on a romantic evening for my Wife and I. The cave room was nice, clean, and relaxing and it was an enjoyable experience in a great town. We especially liked the shower with the overhead and controllable side nozzles. The biggest downer was the heavy chlorine smell wafting from the pool that left me with a bit of a headache after a few hours of sucking down the fumes. The staff was friendly and helpful and though the décor a bit old, the overall cleanliness was fabulous. If the «fantasy» suite is something you think you’d like, give this hidden getaway a try!

Big rooms. Ours had a fireplace and the hot tub. The Wi-​Fi was great! The coverage and the speed was excellent, and usually at smaller hotels, it can be a little spotty. The weekends have hot breakfast which were decent. And it’s very close to downtown. Maybe a mile by walking but a very quick drive. The hotel is also just a few blocks away from Ulysses Grant’s house. It’s also next-​door to a pizza and ice cream place, so you can sneak out and grab a dessert in the evening. Overall, a great value for the area.

My wife and I stayed here back in November. This was pretty much the only place that had any availability by the time I got around to booking. That said, it wasn’t too bad. The staff was friendly and the room was clean. I enjoyed a cigar on the balcony so that was a plus as well. It’s nice that they have a hot breakfast but it really isn’t all that great. However it was enough to get us going for the day and hold us over for lunch in one of the places downtown. It wasn’t my first choice of place to stay, but I wouldn’t hesitate to book it again if it came down to it.

I stayed here on a business trip and there is not much to say so I will keep it short.
* the front desk staff are very nice and helpful
* the accommodations are clean and comfortable
* the amenities are perfectly acceptable
*there not much atmosphere but it is what it is… a clean and safe hotel in the middle of nowhere… with all due respect to Galenians. It is a nice town right outside of Dubuque if you need or want an alternative place to stay.

We booked our room through Priceline and I called the hotel to confirm what type of room we were getting. the lady on the phone told us it was a queen room with whirlpool but when we arrived they only had a standard room. The hotel is clean, however housekeeping never made our room. Jolene at the front desk was super nice and funny. She was the best part of the hotel. I would return but I will get a confirmation via email as to what room I am getting next time.

worst hotel ever. the boyf and i made a priceline reservation and ran into the worst woman ever at the front desk. she made up a story about how there were no non-​smoking rooms left except one that happened to cost fifty dollars more and how it was priceline’s fault for not telling us that we didn’t get a non-​smoking room. i think she fully expected us to pay the extra money but there was no way i was giving her the satisfaction.
we ended up in the «grant presidential suite,» which was appropriately smokey as grant very much enjoyed cigars. i guess that attention to detail is a plus.

We stayed over Saturday night this past weekend. I chose this hotel because of price and amenities. I did think maybe it was a tiny bit pricey… but then again, this is a very popular tourist area, so I can understand it costing a bit more than it might somewhere else.
I really don’t have any complaints. We stayed in a king/​whirlpool suite. It was clean and well appointed. Every room has a very small balcony/​patio (on ground floor) which was very nice and convenient to walk out onto, since we both smoke. (Of course, the rooms are non-​smoking rooms, which, even as a smoker, I appreciate.) Also, since the weather was perfect, it was just nice sitting out there and enjoying a beautiful evening… albeit not much of a view since we faced the parking lot and Hwy. 20. (The back rooms face a forest area. Probably a nicer view, but maybe more mosquitoes?) Also, the whirlpool was very nice and a lot of fun. *grin*
The room had a fridge and a small microwave.
We weren’t into the swimming pool, but checked it out. On the small side, but nice enough if one wanted to take a quick dip. You could swim under an opening to the outside, but that was very small. They had a couple of lounge chairs outside for sunning. There is also a very small workout room with a couple machines and a stationary bike.
Continental breakfast was just OK. Had your standard oatmeal, bagels/​bread, cereals, fruit. You could make a fresh waffle in their waffle iron. I would consider it a good snack, but not all that substantial a breakfast. We only got coffee from it and opted to eat brunch down on Main Street.
Staff was very pleasant and courteous.
One could walk to Main Street, but we found it better to drive.
Indeed, the walls were a bit thin and one could hear some noise and people passing in the hallway a little bit. But we have a white-​noise app on our tablet to block out those noises when we’re sleeping (I highly recommend it!!), so we really weren’t bothered by any of that.
The king-​size bed was incredibly comfortable… particularly for a hotel. Great pillows, too! We slept like babies!
All-​in-​all, I would definitely recommend this property and we would stay there the next time we trip over to Galena.

We were in an emergency pinch and needed a place to stay in the Galena area for 5 days. Searching online, my husband found Best Western Designer Inn and Suites, and promptly booked us for a long stay in a whirlpool suite just because he’s that kind of guy.
On the surface, our suite — the Oriental Suite — was amazing. They really went all-​out with decorating their fancy whirlpool suites. And a door to the outside world was a nice touch.
Then, well, there are the downsides. There’s an indoor pool near the suites, so there’s that awesome chlorine smell. Our air conditioner didn’t work at first, although thankfully the staff was able to replace it before the evening. Our whirlpool didn’t have a functioning cold water faucet; with super-​hot only, it would take hours for the water to cool to a temperature that wouldn’t boil you alive. After the A/​C issue, I didn’t want to risk having to switch rooms, so we worked around the problem with some help from the ice machine. The continental breakfast was very limited, as was seating for enjoying said breakfast, but you get what you pay for, I suppose. The fitness room was very small as well; I didn’t even bother using it.
The other downside is the parking lot. If you stay in the suites, they’re downstairs, and the path to the lower lot looks like someone got excited and wanted to test their new jackhammer on the concrete. Please repave, stat.
Still, it wasn’t an awful little hotel and our stay was otherwise pleasant, especially when factoring in the expense. I’d tentatively recommend to
people who don’t have high expectations.

My husband and I went up for a 2 night stay in Galena. We got a great deal on the room so we weren’t expecting too much. We were definitely pleasantly surprised. The location is just on the hill before you hit Main St. in Galena. The staff was nice and helpful, Amy, who always had a smile on her face is the beating heart of this hotel. The rooms were clean and the noise level was low. The hot breakfast includes make your own waffles, a different array of danishes and even eggs. We stayed in the Northwestern Lodge room which was kitschy and fun. Would definitely stay here again. Great value for your money and good location.
