Bob Marriott’s Fly Fishing Store

Customer for 40 years. Been thru a lot with this shop, some good and some bad. The bad chased me to On-​Line shopping with shops in Mont., Wy. and Idaho. Returned to BM, after a 5 year boycott, because of new ownership. Was hoping for the best. When needed I shop on Fridays and the sales crew on that day are all friendly etc. Today (Thursday) I drove an hour to make a simple purchase. Mistake. Collected a few things then asked a salesman a question about hooks. Told me there was no such thing as a standard dry fly hook and that it really didn’t matter! Asked if you use the material for a size 18 on a size 8 hook, that didn’t matter? And he said «no». But I said, «there would be 2 inches of shank sticking out the back» and he replied «do you think that really matters to a fish»? Wow! When checking out I over heard that same guy call a customer an «ass hole» after learning that the customer had earlier returned an item. That was a first, ever. I’m gonna miss those guys on Fridays.

Bob’s is definitely an awesome place to buys fly fishing gear and tying supplies. Most of the sales guys there are quite happy to help you. I’ve had a mixed bag of experiences here over the years last 5 years that I’ve been shopping here. Walking into the store doesn’t always feel welcoming other times it does. Many times I felt I had to initiate a greeting when it should be the other way around. However If you ask for help finding a product, need to test out a rod, or just need some advice they’ve been very accommodating and patient. They have the most extensive supply of fly tying materials and tools that I’ve seen and have a good supply of fishing equipment and flies. I definatley apreciate that they have cool events and demo days. An extra plus are the availability of beverages and snacks for customers. I tend to spend a good chunk of time shopping there.

Bob Marriotts is a great place for beginners and experts alike. Kevin, the General Manager is helpful as are the staff. I’ve read some of the reviews below about «poor service», but that has not been my experience. It’s possible to catch any business on a shorthanded day or a bad day in general. I would recommend this to anyone with the Fly Fishing bug.

Nice big shop but unfriendly staff who could care less to help me. I drove all the way from South Orange County excited to shop here and ended up leaving after 5 minutes of repeatedly asking for help. I’ve never encountered such rude staff at a fly fish shop. That’s too bad I would have been a good loyal customer.

Great service, knowledgeable staff, and very willing to help with what you need.
Mark and Matt quickly was able to put me onto the polyleaders and flies I was looking for an upcoming salt water fishing trip.
They have a huge (massive) selection of flies, lines, and everything for the fly angler.
They will answer any question without hesitation, attitude, or sales games.
I saw experienced anglers being helped as well as novice people while there and they never try to upsell something that they don’t need — very class act!
Even got a closeout Rio Outbound Short line at an exceptionally great price too.

You guys should start carrying FishOn Energy Apparel!
We stopped by here and the customer service is nice friendly and knowledgeable.
The selection of apparel would probably be great of they updated and carry newer lines like FishOn Energy Co.

Thanks to Matt and Ben for GREAT customer service today. I ended up with some Simms G3 waders and Simms G3 guide boots.

Shop is well stocked with rods, reels, waders flies ect. Customer service is a mixed bag. I have been in and the person that helped me was very informative and friendly. I have also been in and have had the arrogant, not helpful, no greeting only one in store treatment. What knocked down my rating for this review is the horrible online service and the poor in store service. I have used their online service twice now. Both times it has taken a month for delivery. When I call to find out the status of my online order I get different answers depending who answers the phone. I cancelled my order today and it just seemed to me that they really didn’t care. I want to shop here but, really can’t justify spending any more money in here. If anyone from this store reads these reviews please take me off of your mailing list…

I was over the Moon too see there was a Fly shop near our trucking terminal in SF Springs. I’m new to Flyfishing and have taken up Tenkara because it suits my needs up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I fish. We don’t have any Flyshops in the Keweenaw and I have bought a few fly tying kits for Tenkara on the Internet and have really enjoyed tying my own flys. So when I read about this place I was so excited to finally get there to hoard a few supplies for when I get home.
I explained that I was New to Fly fishing and just learning about tying my own flies… Now here is where my expectations were met with some pretty lousy service and the service I did get just basically made me feel like an idiot. I’m not giving up on Fly tying shops but I am giving up with this one.

Probably the biggest selection of product in SoCal. Staff is knowledgable and informative without being superior in attitude. When I bought a glass rod, Kern took out the entire selection of glass and we compared them in the lot. Not just me casting, but him as well because he wanted to have a better sense of what the store was carrying.
Went to the Fair today and it was darn near as good as the old Pasadena show– lots of manufacturers. I know that having a Fair is self serving, but they do such a nice job. And, it’s a rare venue for guys to meet up, whether they be salt or blue liners.

What can I say, I love to fly fish… This store has everything and more you would need to get started…

Dont waste your time with this store. Nobody gives a crap about their customers, had three employees standing at the register while a pair of chicks were trying to order something. Do u really fing need that many guys to explain something? How bout the person looking to spend 400 $ on a wading jacket? Go spend your hard earned money at an internet store. The idea that flyfishers should support their local store is bull ish when it comes to marriotts. If you really want good customer service go see jacob at the orvis store in pasadena, skip this crummy place.

Got into the store and received a great welcoming. My husband got a couple of questions and they help him all the time. Friendly staff.

Ok so while the store is still a fairly great store I find since they changed ownership that things are going down hill at least in the value department. Lets face it fly fishing and fly tying are expensive hobbies and now I find that it’s become even more expensive when shopping with these guys. Grizzly hackle purchased this store and now they moved out their competitions products and are mainly carrying Hareline (which is great for many products) but for dumbbell eyes they are poor quality and you get half the amount for the same price as what you got with Spirit River which this store no longer carries, also the spirit river crystal flash and many of their other products were great! They have also stopped carrying Cascade Crest products which are also top notch. I find the new staff (they fired all the good guys that worked there for years) to be less knowledgeable and some of them are just down right goofy, that’s not to say there aren’t a couple good sales guys in the crew still.
This place used to be my go to place for everything I needed and I didn’t have to call ahead I just knew they would have everything in stock but now the last 6 times I’ve visited the store has been disappointing, they are always out of the hooks I need, they didn’t have some Gamakatsu hooks in stock for over 6 months, they are always out of Daiitchi saltwater hooks now and I find myself constantly having to make substitutions for materials they are out of stock on … also the leaders and leader material is always ravaged and out of stock. They offer to order things which is cool but I don’t see the point in ordering something and waiting for it to ship to the store when in this day in age I can easily order online and get it shipped much faster to my door as a retail store you have inventory or you lose to online stores these days. It has really gotten to the point where I’m only going there if I need something right away otherwise I am doing business online because online stores are never out of stock and don’t blame their poor stock ordering on the distributors which seems to be happening a lot now at Marriots.
Sorry guys I’ve spent thousands of dollars with you but it’s time to put you on the back burner. Hopefully you will see this and reconsider at least bringing Spirit River products back to the store … From a customer support perspective you have to think that if I’m complaining about it there are probably a couple hundred other customers that feel the same way and just aren’t saying anything about it.

The best fishing store i’ve ever been to (Fly fishing). They have everything you’ll need, and i found the old gentlemen who helped me to be nice and polite. Sadly i’m on a budget and just got a nymph and a popper, otherwise i’d buy half the store! Great freaking fly fishing store.

It’s the only fly shop I know of in the Los Angeles area. I’d heard about them for years and finally visited.
Nice shop, great selection of rods and accessories.
I give only three stars because no one offered to help me and my friend. You have to ask them if you have any questions. We weren’t even greeted and we were the only two in the shop.
Once you ask them, they are very helpful though, but it’s more like you’re interrupting them when you ask them something.
The good part of it is they certainly don’t make you feel pressured to buy anything!

Hands down best fly shop in Southern California. I just wreck my credit card every time I visit and I love it. It’s 1am and I just finished tying up some emerger patterns for this weekend’s trip to the water. I had to come write a review. They are so helpful at Bob’s. On my last visit I had a long list of materials I wanted for three patterns and they had everything in stock plus TWO employees helped me locate everything quickly. Always friendly, large selection and great service. Can’t wait to pay off the balance on my credit card so I can go there again!

Amazing fly shop one of the best on the west coast. Huge Fly Tying selection. They have everything you need. And the staff is nice as well.
