Half Price Books

Staff was extremely helpful and the selection was extensive. I took four kids in to buy each one a book. The prices were reasonable and I was able to splurge. Made the kids day! Plus they allow pets in the store. I will always go back to places that let me bring by furry family member with me.

I love all Half Price Books, but over all this location is a bit smaller than most. The staff are all really nice and helpful. They have a wide selection of books, music and movies but that’s all half price books. So that’s not really saying much. One problem I do have with this location is they never have coffee or tea. And remember they will buy old magazine. If they can’t give you money they’ll recycled them for you.

I Love shopping for BOOKS and RECORDS here because they give teachers a discount! They have a great selection of gifts and stationary. My husband always seems to find something in the «bargain books» clearance section. Free coffee is available in the back.

We went in the Saturday after Christmas. HPB was rocking an extra 20% off your total purchase deal that we looked to take advantage of… us and about a gazillion other bookworms. That place was packed. To the employees credit, the books themselves were really organized and the aisles were clear. The hazard came when it was time to check out. The registers framed a square shape and there was just not enough room for all the people standing in line. It ended up being awkward with people «cutting» in front of each other and cashiers waving their arms from the other side of the square ‘I can take next in line!’ And then four people try to be next in line.
The good prices and well stocked stacks made it worth a trip, but it kinda stinks that the chaotic check out is the last memory.

My favorite book store chain since I was very young, searching through one of the original stores on mockingbird lane. This location, which used to be across the street, now resides in the old Sound Warehouse address. As with most hpb locations, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The store is clean, well organized and inviting.
Their selection is slightly better than others (locations closer to colleges tend to get more interesting things). I’ll always be happy to return, sell a few things and restock the bookshelf at home.

Very good place for cheap books. There was a specific book I was looking for and had gone to Barnes and noble where the book was about $ 16. I couldn’t afford it so I went to half priced books and found it for $ 8 and was able to get 2 other books with it. Only downside is I sold a book to them and got like $ 3.50 lol oh well.

This is a great Half Price Books. While I feel like they haven’t always given me the best deal when I’m selling, I feel like the prices on their products make up for it. And I LOVED that when I went in to sell I got a 10% off coupon for anything I bought. That’s a great feature and should stay!

They didn’t really know their stuff here. They just pointed us a direction and that was it. Not many options for what you want. A lot of the same copies of items. Cheap books, but I perfer barnes and noble.

I love Half Price Books. I shop at them wherever I go. Sadly, as my job requires near constant travel, and since I can’t carry them with me, I end up shipping lots of books home. Oh and don’t forget to check the movie and music sections, sometimes you come across a real gem.

They are very helpful here. I wish they did have some more updated books. I love the children’s section.

We love Half Price Books, and this location is our favorite. If you’re looking for big comfy chairs where you can lounge and drink your latte for a few hours before leaving to buy your books from Amazon, you need to head to the closest Barnes & Noble, which are going out of business because of too many people doing just that.
At Half Price Books, the deals are excellent, the variety unbeatable and a diversity of music, movies and books with an excellent children’s section and a continually changing clearance department. You can even get current magazines for a buck each.
Not sure about some of the complaints about the staff, because I’ve found the folks here to be great. Maybe Nathan B. needs to lighten up.

It would be nice if the workers were more literate, polite or hygienic. The store is in a good location and the selection is okay.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm they have stuffed soft elephant toys! No Seriously hahaha… good return on videos and cds if you want to sell. They also have a wooden chair in the cooking section… so you can play spider with your boyfriend while you read about food… hello…yeah did you just book your next date? lolol Friendly staff, clean restrooms, the entire place smells old. Oh and if you are looking for journal books… make sure the all black one you pick up… does NOT have a yellow duck on the front LOLOL. So masculine. Ryan now has/​had a yellow duck note book… so cute! Nothing a black sharpie cannot fix. hahaha

I am totally going to throw off the rating scale on this place, but it’s my honest opinion, so take it or leave it. :)
I so seldom look for books outside of Amazon, and because of this I am spoiled by new books with fast service at amazing prices. I’m also the girl that will buy & read every book a writer has ever written and stands in line to see the writer just to get the autograph. (Hence, my Unilocal profile!) This isn’t that type of bookstore. When you’re used to shopping at a place that has everything and come to a place that is limited… it seems disappointing, so I preface my review with that statement.
My fiancé needed some books for work and he needed them that second, so we decided to come here since it was close to home. (No Barnes & Nobles in our area!!!) He needed some general computing books, so I wasn’t sure about this place because programs change year to year and it was a miss for what we were looking for, so instead of feeling discouraged I thought I’d look around a bit. (There were shelves of general computing books, but some were outdated and some didn’t apply.) It’s worth it right since I am already there?! I didn’t find ANYTHING. Although it was clean, it didn’t feel organized. Maybe I need a «Dummies Guide» to shopping in a regular bookstore, but I felt overwhelmed a bit. I’ve shopped at major chain book stores and haven’t felt that way, but this felt more like shopping in someone’s house where the shelves were wayyyy too high for an average size girl like myself and where things didn’t seem «right» in placement.
This being said, I think this place is cool because it does have half price books with reasonable service and it is close to home. It’s okay for me, but definitely didn’t knock my socks off. I would like to say though that this is the type of place that has first edition books & random things that you wouldn’t get at a normal bookstore. It’s an eclectic place where you could find a treasure, but you have to put in the work. It isn’t my type of place per say, but I could see why the rating is so high. Maybe I will try it again when I’m not looking for anything in particular and definitely wanting to kill some time.

I like this place a lot, as it has a little more soul then the bigger chains. I especially like the back section of $ 1 books! woot! You never know what you will find here, which makes the hunting fun.

People may find it hard to believe, but after stopping in at Half Price Books, but I’m actually excited about a book store!
Clearly not your everyday book store. This is almost like a movie trader or a pawn shop for books, movies, vinyl records, video games, computer software, and more… but mostly books. The store is broken up into traditional sections based on genre and then into styles or content. The biggest thing though is that the books actually are HALF PRICE! I have no idea how they manage it, but I’m nearly pissed at the money I have spent on other books in the past at big chain retailers when i found the same exact books here for 50% less. And it was every single book at one half the cover price! Again, no idea how they do it but I’m okay with it.
There was a section for first editions in case there are collectors out there (noticed a Bible printed in 1840). Other sections, as already mentioned, include video games and computer software, CDs, DVDs, and TV series, and even vinyl records.
If you have old books, movies, and the above listed, they offer a cash/​store credit option to trade in or sell your goods to them for resale. All that while you peruse the shelves.
Managed to even do some of my Christmas shopping, as well as to plan some other ideas going into the season…

Good location! I agree with another reviewer who stated that is hard to judge on HPB location over another because their inventory changes so rapidly. What I can tell you is that this store, compared to the other locations, is medium sized, clean, well-​organized and has a great selection. The staff was friendly, and check out was a breeze.
Their selection of used records, and children’s book was a bit lacking, but overall the store is a great place to buy used books on the cheap.
One more tip: Get on the HPB e-​mail mailing list. They routinely send coupons including the occasional «50% off of a single item» coupon which is a great excuse to buy that 1^st edition in the display case you’ve had your eye on.

I’ve been a fan of Half Price Books for years as it provides a fantastic selection of gently used books at great prices. I wish the store was more centrally located, instead of past I-​20 – us urban folk need affordable books too! You won’t find every book on your wish list, and the selection of new books is extremely small, but you’re almost always bound to find bestsellers from the last 15 years in stock since so many people buy them and sell them in the first place. The best part is that many of the bestsellers are usually hidden in the clearance center in the back, marked down to just $ 1 or $ 2. This particular location doesn’t have a database of books in stock, so you’re pretty much on your own in finding a book, but the staff are helpful and friendly and will do what they can to assist you!
Also, Teachers can get books for their classroom for free with a principal’s note/​request on school letterhead (I used to teach in Houston and received 6 boxes of young adult books! It was awesome). I haven’t confirmed that the Hulen location does this, but I believe this is a company policy so if you’re an educator wanting to stock your classroom library you should investigate.

Man, if you dropped me into this store without telling me where I was I’d swear this was the Irving location (they look pretty alike from the inside).
It’s really hard to review a one Half Price Book store over another since some of the content changes from one store to another and the kind of content they have can be subjective.
But, what I’ll say is that I really enjoy browsing this and other Half Price books when I can (usually for CDs).
The store is maintained well, service is typical, and you’ll be able to get your hands on over 20 copies of the same Better Then Ezra album (LOL).
My only minor complaint about Half Price Books is the strange new products they offer.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed this stuff too, but they all offer these poor production quality CDs, DVDs, and various other items on different subject matter.
You can tell because it’s nothing you’ve seen anywhere else, and they will have a ton of the same stuff (plus it’s usually shrink wrapped).
I glance right over these products, and I have a hard time believing that they’re moving this product out the door (since, like I said, they have a ton of it).
Anyways, just a curious observation I wanted to mention. :)

As a voracious reader, I am hesitant to pay full price, or even B&N’s discounted prices, for a brand new book that I’ll finish in three days and put up on a shelf.
Enter Half Price Books…
Obviously not meant to compete with B&N, or Border’s, but targeting cost conscious readers and listeners, HPB lets you find everything from the latest releases to obscure classics to reference books for a fraction of the price. Not only are you saving money, but you’re giving these books a second lease on life.
The next time you’re on south Hulen, check this place out. I guarantee you won’t be able to walk out empty-​handed.
