History

Established in 1990.

It all began 25 years ago, in 1990, when long-​time islander Frank Penwell decided to start a building supply business. Originally called Island Wholesale Products, Frank built a large group of loyal customers by providing stellar customer service and support alongside unbeatable prices. Island Wholesale Products decided to launch a new chapter in 2015, punctuated by a change in name. Now known as Island Building Products, the company has added Dwight Jr to the sales team, and is currently seeking additional employees to fill openings in sales as well as window, door, and carpet installations. Through thick and thin, busy seasons and hard times, Island Building Products has continued to serve the San Juan Islands, Seattle, and Vancouver B.C. by providing excellence in customer service, outstanding prices, and the expertise and drive to ensure that every customer gets nothing short of the best.

Business Owner

Dwight Sr was born and raised in the small town of Mount Vernon, Iowa. The son of a doctor, Dwight grew up knowing the importance of taking care of the people around him. He graduated from McCauley High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before attending the University of Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Dwight then enrolled at Dallas Theological Seminary, graduating with a Masters Degree in Theology. Upon completing his education, he traveled around the United States and abroad before landing in Eugene, Oregon, where he met his eventual wife, Judi. In 1987, the family relocated to Friday Harbor, and in 1996 Dwight came to work at Island Building Products (then called Island Wholesale Products). Dwight combines nearly two decades of experience in the building supply industry with a keen sense of responsibility to care for his customers, resulting in an outstanding reputation for customer satisfaction.
