Why do I like to shop at junky stores for stuff that are mostly useless and of questionable quality? On Saturday mornings when I was a kid, my father would drag me to to the City Hall area to browse junky electronics & close-​out stores similar to Odd Lots and Jack’s. The ancester to these places was Job Lot on Church St and my dad would pick up tools and what-​not for discount prices. Fast forward to today and all the 99 cents stores dotting the landscape are the new incarnation and fill the niches left by Woolworth’s, Lamston’s and other five & dime stores that have faded into memory.
So 99 Cents City IX is a pretty big store in the Electchester strip mall. Just about 99.9% of their goods are imported from China, so think of it as a downscaled Walmart. Plus there’s a large parking lot to remind you of Wally World. Still there are bargains to be had if you’re looking and they just happen to have it in stock. Where else are you going to get a 100′ of Cat-​5e networking cable for $ 10? Or Sharpie markers 2 for $ 1? Kitchenware, school supplies, automotive and even underwear are sold at to-​go prices. Not the greatest quality, but you get what you pay for.
