I just made my first appointment for Dr. Mah after reading all of the raving reviews about what a wonderful optometrist he is. My appointment is next week.
But I just HAD to write about how sweet and awesome his office manager Pam is! She was extremely patient and easy to work with on scheduling, which can be a laborious task with my funny work schedule and Dr. Mah’s few and far between openings (since he’s so popular). Pam also kindly and clearly explained to me what to expect on my first visit, and what would and would not typically be covered with my type of insurance. She invited me to come in a little earlier before my actual appointment time to look at frames if I wanted to (fun!), since she knew I had to leave for work at a certain time, but all of Dr. Mah’s earlier appointments were already booked. She was also very prompt in sending me all of the initial paperwork via email.

This review is for Dr. Ching! She is the absolute sweetest and a great optometrist!
I was running late to my 12:00 appointment and she was willing to switch over her lunch hour so I could come in at 2:00 instead and not have to reschedule my appointment for another day. +5000 points.
She is very gentle and kind during the eye exam (I went in for the regular eye exam and lenses exam). Like she isn’t sudden or rough and the way she does the whole procedure is comforting and professional. +5000 points
All the problems I bring up about my contact lenses being uncomfortable or dry, she comes up with helpful suggestions!

Dr. Mah was awesome! I was referred to this office from my boyfriend’s family. He is very friendly and very informative.

I’ve been coming here for 5 years. There’s not a lot to add except 5 stars since all the other reviewers have summed their experiences very nicely. I can add that Dr. Mah has a great sense of humor. Also, the staff went out of their way to help me with a stringent glasses requirement for a period costume.

I called Dr. Mah at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, and he immediately called my daughter to help her with her eye. He was compassionate and caring!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said in all of the other 5 star reviews. So my thought is to give a different perspective on Dr. Mah and his associates (everyone who works in his office). I am involved in the government services that is required to do safety inspections. Since I was also in need of an optometrist I thought this would be a good way to narrow my choices besides Unilocal.
When I had entered Dr. Mah’s office (unannounced of course), I was immediately greeted with a friendly and professional welcome. Needless to say the entire inspection went that way. After the inspection was completed, I let them know that I was interested in seeking an optometrist (considering that I have never needed one before but I am at that age). My next question was «besides you, who would you recommend?» This was the only business that gave me local recommendations. That shows how confident they are in their service. They were willing loose a customer if that meant that I would get the best and most comfortable care. This demonstrates to me that they value the medicine of optometry more than the customer money that comes in. This is truly top rate medical care!
As for their inspection… this is one of the cleanest and well operating establishments that I have inspected (and I have inspected 1000s). That was also part of the professionalism that Dr. Mah and his staff provide. They are very transparent, they don’t do the «hard sell,» and most of all they are concerned with the patients medical care as opposed to the money they may gain or lose. Nothing but professionalism for this business!
My first (and subsequent) experiences have been just as positive. There was even one time that my glasses were stolen. They had a new pair for me in a week using some of their «chits» to get me them. They are at market rate so attempting to save money at discount eye places really isn’t that much of a savings and you loose the personal touches that Dr. Mah’s office gives.
I have to admit… they are my favorite health care professionals.

Dr. Mah has been my optometrist for the past 6+ years. Everyone in the office is very helpful and friendly!

After my first ever optometrist appointment with Dr. Mah, I had the most amazing experience! A little bit about him: He has a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degree. He has been serving 12 years as the Director of Optometry Clinic in Oakland’s Asian Health Services and is also a member of Alameda-​Contra Costa Optometric Society, The California Optometric Assoc., and the American Optometric Society. He is someone who is expert in his field of vision. A true eye connoisseur. No doubt, he is very knowledgeable about his subject. During my appointment with him, I learned so much from him more than I would learn from school. He’s like a science teacher that makes it interesting! He’s a very kind-​hearted man.
The whole process here is very smooth. It was worth one month wait to get into his appointment. YES, it is that good! The staff are super nice too. They won’t push you into buying expensive eyeglasses you don’t need spend much on. They are helpful and polite. I was a bit overwhelmed choosing my frame here because there were so many to choose from. My tip is to take selfies and see what you like best! They accept VSP, EyeMed, and Superior Vision insurances.
I wouldn’t go to any optometrist but to this man himself. A true eye Jedi, Dr. Mah!

I cannot say enough great things about EVERY member of their staff. They had so much patience with my two lively children and they went above and beyond for my son who needed prescription goggles for use under his motorcycle helmet. When we couldn’t get the helmet on over the goggles they set up an appointment for us to meet with the representative from the goggle company. So nice of them! They are a sweet, family friendly office and I highly recommend them and will never go anywhere else.

I never write Unilocal reviews because I don’t want to share treasured secrets with everyone (I’m selfish like that) only because I know these businesses will only become more popular… and I’ll be kicking myself for telling everyone my favorite optometrist and he’ll be too booked to see me. But because Dr. Mah is such a great optometrist that I’d recommend to family and friends, I guess I’ll just have to fight fellow Unilocalers to book appointments in advance… I’ll also probably get tagged as filtered because it’s a raving review but oh well. Take what you read and decide for yourself! :P
I’ve been going to Dr. Mah since I was in middle school. Not to date myself, but that’s definitely more than a decade! He’s the only optometrist I’ve had and even when I went to college in Socal, I would always make sure to make annual visits when I was back in the Bay! What I like about Dr. Mah is that he’s very detailed and explains everything clearly. He’s also really patient and answers all my questions and concerns. My whole family are also patients of Dr. Mah and he can also speak Cantonese, which is a break for me from being a translator ;)
From colored transitional glasses (trust me, it was cool in middle school… but now that’s a «what was I thinking?» moment) to Coach computer/​reading glasses to now finally polarized Juicy Couture sunglasses, his office offers a wide range of glasses from different brands. I never feel rushed when I’m picking out frames and his associates are always helpful to suggest different styles to me without being overly pushy or demanding. I personally don’t wear contacts but his office does offer it as well.
I appreciate that he always sends friendly letters to remind me that it’s time for my annual visit for another checkup. I also like that every other Saturdays his office is opened, which is great since I don’t like to go in on weekdays during work hours.
I choose to stay with Dr. Mah because of the feeling that I get is like I’m visiting a family friend instead of seeing a doctor. It’s a family run business (Dr. Mah’s sweet wife, Pam, helps him out) and I’ve seen the same dedicated staff over the years too. If you’re looking for an optometrist who actually cares about your health and remembers you, I’d recommend Dr. Mah :)

Desperate to find a great optometrist I searched Unilocal.I could not believe all of the great reviews for Dr. Mah and thought it was too good to be true. I went ahead and booked an appointment. Although I was a bit frustrated with the wait, 4 weeks, I booked it anyway.
Two weeks ago I went in for my exam and I have to say that was the most pleasant, thorough, and funny eye exam I’ve ever had. Dr. Mah is so professional providing details of what is going on in the exam. I received my glasses yesterday and they are perfect. In the past, I’ve always had to take my glasses back to have them adjusted because the prescription was off. Not this time!!! For someone who has been wearing glasses for over 25 years, you have no idea how happy that makes me.
The front desk staff is also super friendly and warm. My only regret is not having found Dr. Mah sooner.

When an eye doctor has 5 stars from every person Unilocaling you know they have to be a good doctor. This is the best eye doctor around. He is very professional but also has a softer side when dealing with patients. I have been going there off and on, depending where I am living since the early 90’s.
On my first visit to get contacts, it took me for over 3 hours until I was able to touch my eye and get the contacts in and he was right there encouraging me the whole time. Now that’s dedication to patients.
The office is super dupper accomodating with schedules and does what they can to make sure you get a time that YOU need, not what is best for them. They have late hours sometimes during the week too.
It’s a small office but so personable that you feel like you’re in your living room getting an exam.
Unless I move out of the state, this is my eye doctor for life. Pam and everyone there are like the friends you see occasionally but you always know they are there for you when you need them.

DR MAH is hands down the best optometrist i have been to! He gives each patient enough time. Explains everything thoroughly. He is super friendly and so is everyone in his office. I couldnt find a babysitter and had to take my baby with me to my appointment to which his wife took care of her while i got my check up down. Not only that but he always makes sure to get me the contacts i need. he is a man of excellence.

I came across Dr. Mah on Unilocal when I decided to find a new eye doctor. I was impressed by the glowing reviews so I thought I would give him a try. I have been going to him for about a year and a half now. I think everyone in the office is so friendly and helpful, especially Pam and Anna. They remember me and make me feel very welcomed and taken cared of, not like I’m «just another patient».
Dr. Mah is a great optometrist… he has such a friendly demeanor and is extremely knowledgeable — he explains the «whys» of the tests he does and provides pros and cons of my different options. When I wasn’t sure about the strength of the contacts lens I wanted to go with, he was able to readily provide several pairs to try out, and scheduled an appointment for a followup to see what I thought. He has also provided me with samples of 1-​day disposable lenses that are convenient when I go away for the weekend for example. He always provides me with samples of new lens cleaning solution to try, which I think is great. I find myself having conversations with him about Cal football, skiing expeditions, and even different local restaurants to try!
He is such a nice guy and even better eye doctor. I have recommended him to my family and friends as well.

I’ve been going to Dr Mah for close to 4 years now. I absolutely love this office. Dr mah is so friendly with this patients and is a fantastic doctor. His office staff — Anna, Pam, May or Sandy are so courteous, polite and customer friendly. I would recommend Dr Mah to anyone looking for an eye doctor.

My husband and I have been patients of Dr. Mah for about 6 years now. He is a great Optometrist. He is very thorough and professional and also very welcoming and kind. I don’t live close by this office but I make a point to drive out and see him because I wouldn’t think of changing my eye doctor. The staff is efficient, kind, and helpful. I recommend this office to friends and family.

I have been going to Dr. Mah for over 10 years now. Now my husband also goes to him. He is great. He explains everything very patiently and never rushes you.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Mah’s for about 2 years. When I finally confessed to my mom that the words on the computer screen were blurry, she sent me down to Dr. Mah, whose office is conveniently located in the Ohlone Village shopping center near where we live.
I was a little apprehensive before my first appointment, but Dr. Mah was fantastic. He explained every little test he was doing on my eyes so that I wouldn’t feel like I was just being poked and prodded. After the initial exam of deciding if one letter looks better compared to another letter and so on so forth, I got to play this cool video-​game like test that determines your ability to see tiny white dots on a screen. That part is always fun.
Once all the testing is done, we get down to the nitty gritty: the glasses. Luckily, Dr. Mah’s office has just about every style of glasses you could ever hope to try on. I tried on a bunch of fancy, designer glasses because I like to think I’m a fancy girl (and apparently the insurance was covering it). I fell in love with an adorable pair of Juicy Couture frames that were recommended to me.
Overall, great experience every time I go. I usually dread going to appointments where I have to do tests and whatnot, but I really don’t mind going. In fact, I actually look forward to the video-​game test.

Dr. Mah is an amazing optometrist! I came back after 6 years and he still remembered me. His work is extremely precise and thorough, and explains everything he does, which is great because it’s like an eye exam + an educational lesson all in one. Dr. Mah knows exactly what he is doing and does an excellent job at getting my prescription as accurate as possible.
The office has a wide variety of frames (lot of designer brands such as Juice, Dior, etc.) and the ladies at the front desk were very polite and helpful.
After switching through 5 optometrists, Dr. Mah has done the best job in getting me the right prescription and tailoring to my needs. I highly recommend him as an optometrist if you are in the nearby Fremont area, you won’t be disappointed!

I’ve been a patient for over 10 years and I love Dr. Mah, Pam, Sandy and the whole staff. They are so friendly and calm and never stress out (at least not in front of patients!). They also give me the best options that work with my insurance.
I am picky with contacts and Dr. Mah worked with me to find the best fit (even though it took 3 different brands and 2 months). Thanks Doc!
I’ve moved far away and tried other doctors but those doctors seemed so impersonal. It is so difficult to find a great doctor so stick with the ones you are most comfortable with!
