Driving back from Galena in the middle of a bad snow storm, we decided to stop here and grab some lunch. Wow we were shocked at how great of a hidden gem this place is. The route 20 burger was awesome and possibly the best onion rings I’ve ever had. Huge portions and good prices. The steaks look darn good too, have to try that next time. This will definitely become a staple on our Galena getaways.

All my family members still live in the Freeport area, 36 years ago I left & made my life in Califormia, Thanksgiving 2015 I was able to. Get home for Thanksgiving, first time in years & we ordered turkey from Rt 20 bar. They ended up having trouble with their kitchen so that our Turkey wasn’t ready when scheduled, I just want to say RT 20 went far above & beyond what was necessary to make things right

CONS: We did not have a good experience here. Waited 45 minutes to get waited on and had some of the worst food around. Maybe we should give it a second chance, but would hate to waste another meal out there so it’ll be a long time before that happens.
PROS: it is a good «bar» atmosphere. Stick to bar and don’t try to be a restaurant and you’ll be fine.

Overall it has a country theme restaurant and it feels cozy when you walk in. It was always clean when I visited.
Menu
I liked their menu overall, but can’t give high scores because your limited to bar food.
Value
This is where they shine, 2 dollar burgers on Tuesdays! I drove from Chicago particularly on Tuesday just to come here for their special and meet friends.
Typical American cuisine/​bar food, it wasn’t super amazing where you want to come back because you crave it but their reasonable prices and value makes it worth wild.

Found this place thanks to other Unilocalers. Like others heading back to Chicago from a weekend getaway. If you walk away hungry from this place, you didn’t try. I went with the open face steak sandwich. The ribeye was cooked perfectly. The hand breaded onion rings are excellent. Their breading is crispy like a tempura and an excellent crunch. My wife had the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pork was done fresh for her order and was not one of those processed tenderloins you get at some places. The breading was crispy and done right.
I am looking forward to my next visit to the area so I can stop here again! Don’t pass this one up.
They do specialty drinks in a 16 oz mason jar for $ 5.

Come on! This is the first steak salad I’ve ever eaten that actually has REAL ribeye (blackened) on it. And it’s actually medium rare, just as I ordered it! Take a look at the picture. We’re Chicagoans heading back home from a week in Galena & really needed a fast bite after cross-​country skiing. Amazing fried pickles, bacon cheese burger & this steak salad. Ok, it’s iceberg lettuce, but get real, this place is in the middle of the country out here, not in any big city. Great find.

$ 2 Tuesday burgers!!! That’s it. The mushroom Swiss is also a great choice. Their $ 5 sex on the beach drinks are pretty amazing!!! Only bad thing is that there’s a lot of just fried food and it is a little bit out of the way.

They have the greatest prime rib in the area. they appear to be slow in updating their menus in regard to price changes. but the price they charge is quite reasonable.

Route 20 Bar & Grill has great American cuisine. Their burgers are great, their pork chop sandwich is great, they make homemade batter for onion rings, pickle chips, etc and they have a good Friday night fish fry.
Also, on Mondays and Wednesdays they have $ 1 domestic bottle all night. I know that on Wednesdays it’s supposed to be karaōke but usually people (a lot of people) just request songs and dance all night. It is literally the only place I have seen people dance en-​mass in Freeport.
