Cakes To Die For

Ah. This is a very interesting bakery with a wide selections of pretty neat desserts. They offer brownies, cupcakes, cookies, French macarons, rice crispy treats and cakes. They make pretty awesome customized cakes.
Anyways, the cupcakes here aren’t the best. But the brownies and macarons are amazing!

First and foremost, I was confused by the theme. They got a black and white color motif going on, a skull and crossbones for the company logo, and the delivery car is a hearse. All pretty cool. But a part from that, none of the desserts sold (at least the cupcake and single cake slices you can buy to sit down and eat there) have anything to do with the «die for» theme. Just… regular vanilla, chocolate, caramel, whatever cupcakes. I dont’ know. I just thought the cupcakes would reflect the same look the rest of the company brand uses. Like black and white cupcakes with little skulls and tombstones on them or something.
But a part from that, the cupcakes suck. I tried two; one bite from a friends and the one I picked out which was butterscotch flavored. Neither cake had any flavor, neither did the icing. It was weird; I’d never had the experience of eating a flavorless cupcake before. And what made the whole thing the worst was that the glass they keep the cupcakes behind is chilled. So my cupcake (and frosting) was extremely hard when I got it and really killed the whole concept of a nice fluffy cupcake with a smooth whipped topping. No, I got a rock cake with rock icing.
But what keeps this from getting a one star is that the staff is really cool and I’ve had a cup of coffee here before and it’s quite good. So at the very least you can get a nice cup of joe served by some cool people. But if the cupcakes were any indicator of the rest of their baked goods, I won’t be coming back.

I’m relatively new to this bakery, but so far I can say they have the best cookies I’ve ever tasted! The blondies, eclairs, and cream puffs are close behind in deliciousness!

Fiancé and I were hankering for dessert to top off our date night. While strolling (and trolling) down market street, we found this place. While we both agree the treats we got (éclair, cinnamon bun, and a blonde with tons of toppings — coconut, pecan, choc chips, etc., etc., etc) satisfied our sweet tooth, they also gave us tooth aches!
Sickeningly sweet even, especially the bun and blonde. The éclair was good, but it took us days to eat the other items.
So if we are disparate for a sweet jolt, we will drop back in, but we prefer sweets that satisfy the craving without overwhelming our palates and making our teeth throb.

Picked up cupcakes for my daughters gymnastics team. We got strawberries and cream, nutella, peanut butter & chocolate, and red velvet… wow. Could not be more impressed! Super glad this bakery came to downtown frederick, Cakes To Die For far surpasses the other cupcake shops, and frankly, it’s about time this town got a good one. Will definitely get cupcakes here for the next event.

Always come here after dinner and have never been disappointed. The place itself could use some better décor to make it more inviting, although they now have a cute seating area so that’s a start and it’s nice sitting outside.
The staff is always nice and never rude. If you come early enough the window is filled with goodies like cupcakes, macaroons, tarts and pies. The cupcakes are great, not too sweet and fresh. The macaroons are my favorite– so flaky, textured and not too sweet. Recently also had a lemon cookie which was also fantastic.
To top it off they have good coffee. It’a regular coffee from a standard machine but it’s surprisingly good. I’m waiting for an event to order a cake!

I waited awhile to review Cakes To Die For, but I really do love this place. Everyone is extremely friendly, and they have great baked goods! As they’ve gotten more settled, they’ve added more and more to their daily offerings, which has been really nice!
You can smell the cinnamon rolls outside every morning, but they offer so much more than that. They have cookies, bars, cupcakes, etc. They have a pretty good selection of vegan and/​or gluten free items as well, which are listed on their menu.
I’m a die-​hard cookie fan and these guys do it right — my favorites are the M&M and the Peanut Butter cookies.
I am not big on bars and cupcakes but they are pretty good here. A friend of mine ordered a custom cake from CTDF and they had a great outcome on that!
I second whomever said that it would be awesome if they opened a bit earlier but I imagine they already have a few hours of prep in the mornings so earlier is probably difficult. Might be something for them to consider in the future as they become more established — either way, they have my patronage downtown and I regularly recommend them to people in the area.
Their prices are extremely reasonable as well!

Bump! Here’s four stars! Staff has been friendlier and friendlier as I continue to stop by. Items offered have been growing and I’m always impressed by the brownies and blondies.
It would be great if they opened earlier! I walk by every morning and am tortured by the cinnamon roll smells! It would be a great opportunity to provide baked breakfast goods for people who work nearby. Also, bread. Frederick needs a place that offers fresh baked bread.

Oh my goodness. I came here because one of my friends posted a review And I got the s’mores cookie while the BF got the cheesecake cupcake. Both we’re amazing ! The s’mores was chewy but fresh. The cheesecake had fresh strawberries on it. We will be back

I am in absolute LOVE with the décor in this place ! We went in here for desert after dinner & OMG those cinnamon rolls are literally TO DIE FOR !! lol. Never craving Cinnabon again !! Also had a cupcake with cookie dough on it & boy it was the BOMB !! Definitely will be back to try other things !

I just finished writing up a small review on their FB page and indicated I would come and review here… so here I am! My kids and I have been to Cakes to Die For 4 or 5 times since it opened and, I must say that I have been equally impressed each time. The price for their s’mores bar or brownie bar are reasonable and the sizes are generous. I admit to only having tried one cupcake once – chocolate with peanut butter frosting – but thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not a fan of heavy frostings and this one was light and «fluffy».
The employees there are all very nice and offer up obvious but friendly suggestions such as, «Heat the s’mores bar up in the microwave for a few seconds and it is amazing!» (NOTE: true). It’s easy to miss the building as you’re traversing up N. Market St. as it was formerly a bank and the decorations, while skulls and crossbones, are far more subtle than one might expect. However, this is a gem of a bakery and well worth the visit!

My husband and I went there for a cake tasting for our ceremony. I was so excited to try it because I loved the concept of the place. The icings were great, but the cakes absolutely sucked. They were dry and hard, I could have made a better cake. Needless to say, we will not be having them do our wedding cake.

We were in the area and came across Cakes To Die For. So glad we decided to pop in. Ordered some cupcakes and other goodies to take home. Their cupcakes were delicious. Light icing that wasn’t overly sweet. Had a good flavor. The cake was fluffy but could have been a bit more flavorful. Overall, I really enjoyed the cupcakes. Their doughnuts were OK, it was a bit heavier than I would have liked. The S’mores Bar was delicious. Not too sweet and packed with chunks of chocolate. Service was super sweet. Employees have a nice sense of humor. They were kind and attentive. Some seating is available inside.
Glad we stopped by.

I went in on a Thursday morning to order a cake for a birthday on Saturday. I was turned away because I did not place the order a week in advance. What troubles me is that I was sent there by a restaurant owner in Frederick and there was no attempt to even try and retain me as a customer. They acted as though they could care less. I went to the Jefferson Pastry Shop and ordered 2 cakes which will be ready by 10 am on Saturday. So much for Cakes To Die For This is George P. not Allison A.

I ordered a cake for my Sisterinlaws baby shower. I had everything all decided. design…cake/icing flavors… how many ppl etc. I emailed the owner with my requirements including the pictures of cakes that I wanted my cake to look like. Received email from owner saying not a problem cake can be done… this is how much it is. $ 265…ok so I paid… she had no problem taking the whole amount up front. Now I went to pick up the cake and it was NOTHING like we had talked about. So disappointed. The owner refused to do anything about it. I cried the whole way to the baby shower. It was no where near the level of craftsmanship I was expecting for the price I paid. Do NOT go to this bakery expecting beautiful cakes. You will be sadly disappointed. The owner will take your money and thats enough for her. She will do nothing for customer satisfaction. Will give all manners of excuses main one being that she didn’t see Eye-​to Eye with customer.
PS. I was ordering all the way from Greensburg PA… after reading reviews on here… makes me think that the ppl on here are being paid…

I walk by this bakery almost every Sunday since it’s at the end of the block from my church but I never stopped in because I assumed they only made cakes and cupcakes. I finally went in on a weekday evening when I wanted said cupcake and alas, they were sold out. I went with the peanut butter bar and loved it so I stopped in a few days later in the afternoon to see what they had.
Even earlier in the day, the cupcakes were almost sold out but I snagged the last vanilla one and a raspberry one too. The bf claimed the vanilla one, which turned out to be lucky for me because I didn’t like it. However, the raspberry cupcake had a hint of tartness in the frosting, as well as in the filling so I really liked it.
My favorite item is the dark chocolate croissant. Nobody mentioned they used dark chocolate to me so it was a pleasant and delicious surprise! I also recommend the Nutella cheesecake– it’s very flavorful without being too rich and heavy.

This review is about a Cake only, not other baked goods.
I have to start with the fact that I won a free cake from Cakes to Die For on WFMD :) Yup, Im that 20-​ty some weirdo that listens to AM radiostation and enters free cake contests. Either way, on August 14^th I picked the certificate up and called the bakery eight away to place my order, since my mom’s 55^th Birthday was on the 15^th. And though it takes 2 days for the custom cake, these ladies made it happen!
Anyway, I got a chocolate cake with raspberry butter cream icing and raspberry filling and writing «Happy Birthday Olga» picked it up just when they said it would be ready and it looked beautiful!
The cake was delucious and the filling was just like mushed raspberry goodness stuffed between the layers of the cake… mmm… yummy!
The frosting was raspberry flavored and also good but a tad sweet for my taste. My whole family however, agreed that the cake was delucious and we would definitely get more baked goods from this store! :)

My cupcake crusade continues (you’re welcome). Was very excited about this – good reviews, great building and interior, fun logo. But what matters, of course, is the cupcakes. And… meh. Actually, kind of worse than meh.
They were on the small side. My was either overcooked or the recipe was off because the entire bottom of the cake stuck irrevocably to the wrapper. Had the cake been more flavorful, I would have had no qualms about scrapping that sucker bare with my teeth, but it was so forgettable and bland that I didn’t bother. Are you hearing me? I did NOT bother to scrape cupcake residue off a wrapper. This coming from a woman who will suck frosting out from under her fingernails.
Oh, and the frosting was bland, too.

I’m a little surprised that I haven’t reviewed this place yet, as it’s my favorite bakery in Frederick. Why?
1. Location– it’s right on Market, so my daughter I head here after the Farmers Market on Sunday mornings…
2. Cinnamon rolls– they make tasty, huge, sweet cinnamon rolls. They are doughy, soft and delicious.
3. Personality– The theme in this bakery is glamorous punk rock. Shiny glass skulls, black and white marble…
4. Selection– though sometimes the selection is thin, everything is fresh, and delicious. While other bakeries in Frederick (and there aren’t that many) have suspect quality items, you know everything in this bakery is made in-​house, and with love.
The ONLY thing that might make this better to me is if they ever expand into savory items– empanadas, pot pies, etc. But really, why mess with a good thing???

Walked by this place last week and could smell the cinnamon rolls being baked but couldn’t track down where it was coming from. It wasn’t until I got home and jumped on Unilocal that I realized what place it was. Very easy to walk by considering the bakery is an old bank. You walk in and the vibe is very unique like no other bakery that I’ve been too. Very clean, modern and still has the vault in the back from the old bank.
Now on to the cinnamon rolls I think the pictures speak for themselves. These things were delicious. They were served from the case up front and were close to room temperature but still had they fresh baked taste. Next time I would just get them warmed up.
