Williamson County Animal Control & Adoption Center

I have lived in Franklin, Williamson County, since 1986. I recently went through a messy divorce, and was given a puppy, being trained as a service dog, for PTSD.
I reached out to the WCAC for assistance in having her spayed. According to county records, our tax dollars pay for a spay/​neuter program that is free-​low cost, based on income. I was told that I qualified for a free spay at the shelter, but the earliest appointment was six weeks away. I scheduled the appointment. Three days before the spay appointment, I received a call from the shelter. I was told that the «director» was no longer spaying small dogs!!! Apparently she’s only approving pit bull and pit bull mixes, because they’re «harder to adopt out». I asked if she was telling me that I should BREED my small breed dog. She replied, and I quote, «Well, I mean, small breeds find homes right away.» What in the literal eff, Williamson County!!!
Later, after calling the mayor’s office to report the misuse of county tax dollars, I was called back by another employee of the shelter. This employee had supposed «great news». She gave me the number to a local rescue group (PFA), that would help. I called that place three times, and emailed twice. They never respond. I’m not even sure they’re a legitimate organization at this point.
The moral of this story? Williamson County Animal Control is so behind on the times, that they (by all recent actions and inactions) appear to SUPPORT breeding your dog… unless it’s a pit bull or mix thereof.

I adopted my kitty from here almost 3 years ago and ever since I have followed them on social media. Not only is their shelter in great condition for all the animals, but they really reach out to the community to find these babies GOOD homes. They really care about their job and taking the best possible care of these animals :)

WCAC has a ton of animals. Some days, if they get flooded and overrun with animals, they drop the adoption fee to a lower amount or to no fee at all and nonprofit rescues can pull animals from here for free. Its good to know that they do this because this shows that they care more about saving lives of the animals as opposed to making money or even breaking even. I really admire this Animal Control because the people really do care. The one and only issue with this place is that they let cats or kittens get adopted even if they’re not fixed yet and they assume that the adopter will be responsible and have them fixed. They give a voucher so it doesn’t cost anything for the animal to get fixed but people get busy and there’s no telling if they’ll do it. Most animals are adopted out already fixed and fully vetted but make sure you read their medical history and know what you’re getting into before committing.

I am originally from a smaller town so I’ve never seen a shelter quite as nice as this one. I expected the dogs to be in cages outside but instead they were being kept inside in big kennels. The dogs had profiles on their door and depending on the color of their paper it told if they were easier to handle or not. They also had a few spaces where you can take the dogs out walking to see their behavior and so forth. Everyone was helpful. There were a handful of volunteers walking dogs and asking people if they needed help with anything. When we went to look around we discovered that for the whole month of October, adoptions are discounted to $ 31. We found our boy, Shiloh, here and he’s made a good addition to our family.
