The Metra is fabulous. It has issues like any other mode of transport. However, it is affordable, you can read on your journey and you can get almost anywhere.
Take cash, no cards. Listen to the announcements and make sure you leave yourself enough time.

Mecanical delays, switch problems… almost everyday it is something which makes the train late. Still beats sitting on the expressway I guess.

The Metra is great in Chicago. I needed to get to a hotel close to O’Hare everyday one week for a conference and was staying downtown.
It may seem that I should have simply stayed at the hotel at O’Hare, but blah, there is nothing to do out there. I’d much rather be in the city.
Anyway, back to the story, I used the Metra to get to the conference. It is easy and smooth. I could relax, work, read or better yet, Unilocal!while on the train.
I have been told that you are allowed to bring alcohol on the train and drink while riding… I don’t know if you are ‘allowed’ or nobody cares to care if you drink on the train. If anyone has an official ruling on this, please let me know…
