My mom first went to Tendercare 4 years ago after suffering from some paralysis due to diabetic ketoacidosis. The location was great for us(my parents live in Frankenmuth). It wasn’t a wonderful experience(4 women to a room, so no privacy ever; food? Yuck. No phones in the rooms – simply one phone per wing), but I felt like the staff was trying(we took the kids to an Easter egg hunt they put on, for example). Mom got the therapy she needed and was able to leave. Fast forward to the beginning of 2013: a spinal cord infection sends my mom back into the hospital, causes her to lose the use of her legs and we are again looking for a live-in facility where she can get therapy. My mom’s doctor suggested two other facilities, but Tendercare was the only one her insurance would cover. I couldn’t believe how the place had deteroriated. The entrance/exit doors used to be locked and you needed to be buzzed in. Not anymore – it seems no one cares who is coming or going. The doctor refused to listen to my mom and prescribed an insulin regimen completely inappropriate for her(he told her, a 90 pound woman in a wheelchair, «I’ll tell you what I tell all my diabetic patients. You need to exercise and lose weight!» Her meds were given incorrectly daily. Her food was delivered incorrectly. There is now piped in radio music(and we’re talking pop/modern rock, not music the patients would choose) BLARING from hallway speakers 24 hours a day. My mom had me in tears recounting a story of a male patient stuck in a wheelchair in the hall, crying because no one would help him to the bathroom and then crying because he’d soiled himself. She didn’t last a week before checking herself out and going home.
