Pep Boys

Many of us have been deceived or ripped off by auto repair shops, but my experience at Pep Boys in Lake Worth falls into a whole new category of malpractice.
My wife suspected the battery on her Chevy Equinox was bad, so she brought it to Pep Boys. They confirmed that the battery was bad, but she wanted to check with me before paying the quoted price. I didn’t have the time replace it myself, so I suggested that she go back to Pep Boys and have it done there. While replacing the battery, a starter that had never shown signs of a problem failed. Not knowing enough about cars to be suspicious, she authorized them to replace the starter. When she got home, she reported to me that the radio apparently died in the shop as well as the starter. I brought the car back the next day, and told them I suspected the technician screwed up while installing the battery and destroyed two major electrical components in the process. The service manager agreed to look into the radio. Two or three weeks went by while they tried to ‘reflash’ the firmware. When this didn’t fix the radio, the service manager told me that the radio wasn’t their fault. I vigorously argued that both the radio and the starter worked before the battery change, and the service manager eventually agreed to repair the radio. They sent the car to a local dealer, where, as I understand things, they first attempted to replace the panel, and then put a radio on order. The radio was out of stock, and it took about five weeks to get it. During this time, the service manager almost never gave us any updates. We had to call him to get any information, and he seldom returned our calls. I suspected something shady was going on, but couldn’t come up with a plausible scenario. After nine or ten weeks in the shop, the service manager finally told me that my car was repaired. Then there were almost two weeks during which they were waiting for a check to pay the dealer. Finally they got the check but the service manager couldn’t find it. Doesn’t this all sound shady? After about 3 months, my car was finally ready, but the service manager said he would only pay a small portion of the fee for my rental car. I called a consumer complaint line, and within a short time, a district manager contacted me. He agreed to pay the rental fee. A month later, the new battery died, which bolsters my argument that THE TECHNICIAN SCREWED UP when he initially installed it. Pep Boys didn’t refund the price of the starter. Because of this experience, and a number of other horror stories I heard from friends, I will never deal with Pep Boys again.

Horrible experience here and will not be back! I should of taken my car straight to the dealership where they are the experts on diagnosing a check engine light properly. I should of listened to the reviews instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Joe’s mistakes were, taking diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) literally and listening to unqualified advice. For instance a mass air flow sensor out of range code does NOT mean the sensor is bad. Trouble codes are NOT information, they simply an interpretation of information. A mass air flow sensor could read out of range because of a vacuum leak, or several other things.
Vehicle diagnostics is the most difficult function of auto repair. Quality shops spend far more money on diagnostic equipment, training and information than anything else in the shop.
The reason quality shops invest so heavily in diagnostics is because they realize it is far less expensive than the other options.
Professional diagnosis eliminates possible causes without changing parts. Just because a shop is in the auto repair business does NOT mean they are qualified to diagnose problems
Swaptronics, the roulette wheel and diagnostic dice are like most gambling devices. They cost a great deal while offering no benefit.

I ordered parts online and when I picked them up my order was ready and the staff was by helpful. Nice to have no hassles when you chose online ordering!

I agree with other reviews. The service department is just rude. My tire was leaking and I just wanted to have them look at a small nail that was in the tire. They seemed so bothered to help me. But I did get their standard answer «it will be about and hour.» So I got in my car and went to Firestone. They were just as busy but what did the guy do? He dropped everything and took the soap and water mix out to check my tire. Thankfully there was no hole. Through this experience I’ve learned not to go to Pep Boys for service. Sorry, there just is no «pep» in your step.

This review is about the service I had done on my Jeep. The service guys are great. They fixed an electrical issue I had with my Jeep that was eluding me for about a month. Price was reasonable but the updates about what is going on with my vehicle was inconsistent. My Jeep was there for two days and the first day I would get a call about every two to three hours about what’s going on but the next day nothing unless I called. One advice I would give people taking in their vehicles for service no mater where you take it is that sometimes the easiest of jobs can sometimes take forever due to other factors. Things happen sometimes so be prepared.

Took an hour for just an oil change and while waiting here heard 3 different people come in with complaints about mistakes from previous repairs/​services.

Staff is neither knowledgable nor competent. Computers never seem to work. Stock is mismatched and not complete. Prices are high. Expect long wait times. There is an O’riely’s across the street and a Walmart very close. I prefer O’riely’s. Would not return for any reason.
