History

Established in 1911.

In 1911, Argire Lebamoff and his brother, Tom, opened their first Fort Wayne grocery store: A.V. Lebamoff Brothers. The two Macedonian immigrants worked hard for the American Dream.

Just before the depression, Argire Lebamoff opened Liberty Grocery Store at the corner of Piqua (now South Clinton) and Packard. His son, George, started working at age 10, loading beer coolers with ice.

After college, George launched Liberty Liquors. He meticulously cleaned his own stores from top to bottom. He inspired employees by quipping, «I’ll never ask you to do something I haven’t done myself.»

In 1964, George Lebamoff told a friend that «all we sell are bottles and cans and caps and corks.» His friend suggested naming the store «Cork and Cap.» George replied, «No, Cap and Cork,» and the name stuck.

In 1994, Joe Doust Jr., George’s son-in-law, and Andy Lebamoff, George’s son, bought the business’s seven liquor stores and expanded operations.
