Fort Lauderdale is known by a lot of brand type of names, nicknames or slang names; among which are Yachting Capital of the World, Fort La-De-Dah, Fort Liquordale, Venice of America and Draw Bridge City because of its vast number of draw bridges. The most well-known of its draw bridges however is the Las Olas Draw Bridge as it is central to the city connecting the central downtown area with its central Fort Lauderdale Beach area. It’s basically a drawbridge of bascule construction, consisting of two counterweighted leaves or spans which pivot upward on a horizontal axis to allow boat traffic to pass underneath. The atop views of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway along with its marinas, anchorages and boat traffic are nothing less awe inspiring as well as from below with bridge painting by world renown naturalist and marine biologist Guy Harvey. It has a set schedule of openings as well making nonscheduled openings for certain marine traffic. The bridge tender may be contacted by phoning(954) 463‑0842 or by VHF radio on channel 9. Overall it is one of the most outstanding and well known landmarks of the City of Fort Lauderdale.
