Beautiful trail with manzanita everywhere. Hikers share the sometimes-rocky path with polite mountain bikers. The culture is polite! Unfortunately, in spots you can hear traffic from Foresthill Road.

The Foresthill Bridge over the American River is the tallest bridge in the U.S. state of California. It is sometimes referred to as the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge or the Auburn Bridge. The bridge can be seen in the beginning of the action movie xXx [2] in which Vin Diesel’s character Xander Cage is seen driving a stolen red Chevrolet Corvette off of it, then jumping from the car mid-flight and parachuting to his accomplices at the bottom of the American River Canyon.

To get to this trail, take 80 to Foresthill and go straight. The road crosses Foresthill bridge, which, according to the posted sign, is the tallest bridge in California. Continue on curvaceous Foresthill Rd for approximately 10 miles. On your left you will see a long parking area. The trail is clearly marked, and begins with a picnic area and porta-potty. This trail is shared by hikers and mountain bikers. Dogs on leash are welcome. The loop is 9.75 miles and overlooks a beautiful canyon(or is it a divide?). At one point, the kid and I stopped and listened, enjoying the silence. After a couple of minutes of complete silence, a mountain biker came around the corner and narrowly missed us. He apologized for going too fast, and we forgive him, since my kid and dog were extremely slow to move out of the way. People would pass us about every 4 – 5 minutes. Half were on bikes and half on foot. So the trail was not too crowded, but not desolate enough to feel creepy for a woman walking with just her kid and non-intimidating dog. The scenery was very pretty and unmarred by civilization, and the ground was soft and dry. We didn’t do the whole loop today, but we will definitely head back and do it one day soon.
