Specialties

Romantic, 16-​room mountain getaway on a 250-​acre private lake. On-​site activities include swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, hiking, tennis, bicycling, cross-​country skiing, snowshoeing, bird watching, etc. We have a membership in a nearby health and fitness club, too. Our individually decorated rooms have private whirlpool baths, sun decks and fireplaces. Some have full kitchens. Early on, we realized that many folks love to take their pets away to the country, so we instituted the popular practice of allowing dogs in the Carriage House and Cottage rooms. We’re only 20 minutes from the marvelous Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center & Woodstock Museum, as well as the Forestburgh Summer Theater (the oldest continuously performing summer theater in New York State). Other nearby activities include horseback riding, downhill skiing, antiquing, gift shopping and wineries.

History

Established in 1984.

In the latter part of the 19th century, Thomas Hunt Talmage, a businessman from Brooklyn, built the main building as a summer residence. In 1896, the property was sold to an order of Dominican nuns, who developed the area into a major retreat center that included farming, boarding and day schools, children’s camps, a family vacation facility, a convent, a tuberculosis sanitorium and, eventually, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. St Joseph’s even had its own post office. In the late ’70’s, the facility was closed. In the early 1980’s, two Sunday drivers found the Talmage House, a little ruffled but in reasonably good condition, and saw its propects as a fine country inn. They welcomed their first guests in 1984. Today, the Inn has 16 guestrooms (10 units are pet friendly) in 3 buildings, and welcomes guests from all over the globe to enjoy the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.

We just finished our stay at the Inn and it was so enjoyable! My boyfriend and I live in Manhattan, this was such a quick getaway and still feels so far from the city. When we arrived we were greeted immediately by the owner Ivan who got us all set for our stay. Later Matt, who was so helpful and attentive at any time of the day, helped us around and shared nearby places to go.
Breakfast was choose your own omelet as well as switching from pancakes or French toast each day. Other than that you have a few other options to choose from oatmeals, cereals, muffins… Lunch included was a typical cold cuts with sides such as pasta salads, chips, pickles and so on. The bedroom was nice and linens were luxurious, they sell them if you like. I would recommend this place to any family or couple looking for a relaxing stay and secluded from everything. They have a soda machine $ 1 each and they have shots and wine $ 2-​$ 4 dinner isn’t included but a few restaurants are nearby. We went to Mr. Willys both nights!!! So delicious. We will be back soon!
Kayaking, row boats, fishing (you need a license that they don’t offer for fishing at the Inn so prepare for that) and biking was all included and it was never a problem with other guests. We hardly saw anyone and felt like we had the place to ourselves. The bonfire is Perfect at night and they do everything for you. They really don’t skip a beat when it comes to hospitality. Also they have a ping pong table, chess, a pool table and volleyball.
When visiting keep in mind that it is an older house and in the country. So flys and bugs are around a little. Also the house is old so cobwebs and such were around the house. But I am a clean freak and wasn’t bothered. My boyfriend only wished that they had more drink options that weren’t alcohol or soda.
We will be back and bring friends! So beautiful on a summer sunny day!

This place was great. My wife and I stayed in the Hemlock room the weekend after Valentines Day. Everything about this place is great. The Main Inn is beautiful and well maintained. The breakfast is convenient and plentiful. Deli meats and delicious salads are available to eat for lunch and throughout the day as needed.
The Hemlock room was beautiful. The sleep number bed is so comfortable. The jacuzzi tub fits 2 people quite nicely and it is in a great location to see the fireplace. The room has everything that you need. There is a full kitchen and a BBQ with all the utensils and charcoal.
The grounds were also great. The snowshoeing trails are well marked and on the easy side, which would be good for beginners.
The staff was also especially friendly, especially Matt. He was very engaging during breakfast and whenever we ran into him around the Inn.
All in all this is a great getaway. We will definitely be back.

My boyfriend got us a room through Travel Zoo and we spent one night at the Inn. Our stay was lovely. Michelle and the rest of the staff are terrific and we had a relaxing and peaceful two days.
We stayed in the Mallard Room and had a beautiful and spacious room with a fire place and great bathroom. The first floor was cool to explore and we enjoyed the library, the billiard room and the game room. After finding a near-​by Italian restaurant with good food, great service and great prices, we came back to the Inn, borrowed Scrabble and retired to our room with a bottle of wine.
The made-​to-​order breakfast was great and we loved the help-​yourself lunch. It’s not something I’d pay extra for, but it was included in the room price and it was fun making our own sammies and grabbing some prepared salads and hanging out in the glassed-​in veranda.
We were there in the winter so we weren’t able to take full advantage of the beautiful grounds, though we took a lovely walk to the Lake and hung out on the lounge chairs discussing our good fortune. We hope to get back during warmer weather to take advantage of all of the outdoor activities they have to offer. This is definitely a great place for a romantic get-​away!

I loved my stay here. The inn has an old world charm with an extremely helpful staff. My wife and I spent our anniversary weekend at the inn. We loved the private lake and engaging the staff and other guests in the common areas. We chose to «disconnect» but we had a great wifi signal and computer access. The inn was also at capacity and you would never know. We found it calm and quiet throughout the grounds. I can’t wait to come back.

We stayed here one night based off a travelzoo deal and so glad we did. The inn was gorgeous and staff was great. All the activities included (hiking, row boats, kayaks, bad mitten, pool, firepit, bikes, hammocks, deer watching-​they wandering the grounds frequently and more). Breakfast made to order in morning and help yourself lunch.
Rooms were clean, cozy, and big. Had jacuzzi bathtub in our room along with a gas fireplace. The decorations all around the inn were stunning. Plenty of areas to sit and relax around a fireplace or play pool in another room.
Would come back in a heart beat for a nice escape for a couple days. Nothing like peace and quiet in the middle of no where.

Had a great stay this past weekend (9÷20−9÷22). Michelle and all of the staff were great, helpful, and super friendly. We stayed in the Laurel Room, which was absolutely perfect. Big jacuzzi, king bed, gorgeous fireplace… it was tough to leave. We did some hiking, biking, and fishing (lots of largemouth bass). Breakfast was awesome and there are some good restaurants 5 – 15 miles away.
It was an amazing stay, and we will be coming back to try the Eagle’s next, Hemlock, or maybe the Laurel room again.

This is the best place I have found to vacation with my dogs. The grounds are dog friendly, and there is a lake they can swim in. There are some nice hiking spots nearby, if your dogs are active like mine.
The only drawback is the area. There are no good restaurants close by, and the community is generally depressed. But the inn provides lots of food for breakfast and lunch, and you really dont need to go out because there is alot to do on the grounds in the summer.

We had a nice visit to the Inn at Lake Joseph. The inn is easy to get to and the innkeepers were accommodating of our late arrival, the breakfast and help yourself lunch were good (not great), and it was very nice to have all of the facilities available — kayaks, bikes, games, fire pit, roasting marshmallows, etc.
We stayed in the Kingfisher room, which was quite comfortable with a large two person whirlpool, large bathroom, fireplace, and king-​size bed. There was a private sundeck as well but using it was not very pleasant as the staff apparently hangs out just below it smoking and talking loudly about the maintenance of the inn.
Our stay straddled the off-​peak and peak room rates but we were charged the higher rate for both nights. Not a felony, but certainly not the customer service that would have ensured our being repeat customers.
Overall, it was a nice experience but probably not worth the price they charge and likely not someplace to which we will return.

Comfy, homey, relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful setting. Complimentary breakfast is generous with lots of yummy options. Although they don’t serve lunch or dinner there’s always something in the kitchen to nibble, and foraging in the fridge is encouraged.
The pool table was a nice touch and made for a fun evening. Nice place!

Came here for the weekend and it was very relaxing. Headed up from NYC so this was great for us, quiet, relaxing and a great escape from the scorching heat in the city. The lake is absolutely beautiful and so serene. You can just take the rowboat on the lake and stay out there for several hours. There are other recreation activities such as a swimming pool, pool, badminton, tennis, etc. I absolutely loved the hammocks which is something I cannot find in the city. The hot breakfasts are filling and they give you big portions so you won’t be hungry until the late afternoon. You can help yourself to the snacks and deli meats and bread stocked in the kitchen which saves you some money. The innkeepers are very friendly and really try to make your experience a wonderful one. Although my stay was a bit pricy, it was well worth it since it was so relaxing and the views were gorgeous. There aren’t that many activities available but enough to keep you busy for the weekend.

Forgive me! I am not reviewing this Inn. I was a student at St. Joseph’s from 1961 – 1967. It was HEAVEN on earth for me and I would like to find someone else who knew it when it was the school to go to there! I remember schoolmates names, but hesitate to write them here. So if you went there, if you know someone who went there in the early 1960’s and remember a non-​conventional and non-​Catholic name like mine — have them contact me! Please! Thanks!
By the way, in 2011, I showed the «property» to my husband — boy, have things changed! But not the lake!!! It’s still beautiful!

Quiet place with friendly owners. I read lots of review’s before going to this place. Unfortunately, I did not luck out with the weather there as this is a great place to go to if its snowing or warm. I went when it was in between which did not leave much to do on site. There is a nice trail to the lake which was enjoyable.
My room was okay, the walls are thin but really didn’t hear much at night. Cleaning of the room could have been better. My fireplace wasn’t working but it was attended too immediately by the owners who were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was good but we did experience an incident where we were given frozen hash browns. Other than that our stay was not bad at all.

This is a great place to get away and relax. Beautiful lake with kayak and boats as well as pool and hiking. Also pet friendly. The breakfasts are always good, the staff is pleasant and helpful. We highly recommend. We will return.

We needed a getaway from the city for a night, and after a long online search, we decided this was the best place for us. The prices are a bit steep (our based was $ 255 but the bill came out to $ 325 with gratuity, mandatory equipment rentals, etc.), but we really couldn’t find anything more affordable in the area that was nearly as nice as this. And once we arrived, we knew we’d made the right choice.
The location is beautiful. Huge icicles hung from the roof of the inn, and most of the snow hadn’t even been touched – just fresh, perfect blankets of it surrounding us on all sides. The inn is spacious, and the rooms feel very private, even though they’re quite close to each other and not entirely soundproof. We stayed in the Blue Jay, which had a whirlpool tub, a gas fireplace, and a huge private terrace. The bed linens were elegant and very comfortable – none of that frilly B&B stuff here! The inn provided robes for us, ample towels, and bath soaps. It was just the romantic, secluded spot we were looking for.
Cross country skis, snow shoes and sleds are available, and we took a great 2.5-mile ski trail in the afternoon. (There’s a mountain nearby for tubing and skiing, but the tubing was sold out for the day by the time we checked, so call ahead if you’re interested in that.) They light a bonfire late afternoon for the night and provide marshmallows and sticks. The guest kitchen is stocked with sandwich fixings and various salads, homemade soup, cupcakes, snacks, etc. – anything you want, and as far as we could tell available from noon through the night. Breakfast is delicious and huge, made to order.
The innkeepers were incredibly friendly but unobtrusive. They seemed genuinely concerned that our stay was as perfect as possible. Checkout time was noon, but they welcomed us to stay for as long as we wanted after checking out to enjoy the inn and grounds.
There were birds flitting around the inn, and we saw a herd of deer pass by at night. Definitely a welcome change from city life!
Can’t recommend this place enough. Even though two nights wouldn’t really be in our budget, we’d definitely be tempted to splurge for a longer stay. As for there not being anything to do in the area, we didn’t bother to even explore, because that’s what we were looking for: A place to get away and do nothing!

The Inn is a relaxing atmosphere for a nice weekend getaway. The area is very quiet and beautiful. The property itself has a lot of history, and though old, it’s been maintained very nicely.
The lodge area serves breakfast in the morning and has food available for lunch fixings. You’re on your own for dinner — there are a few restaurants nearby but it seems for most, you have to drive a little ways. We stayed in one of the cottages, so, since we had a kitchen, we prepared our own meals.
The cottages are pet-​friendly and very cozy. If you’re planning your own meals: though the kitchen is equipped with the basics of pots and pans, utensils, appliances, plates, and cups, you pretty much have to bring your own aluminum foil, oils, dishwasher detergent etc.
It’s a place to stay for a maximum of 3 full days. There really isn’t much to do in the area. There is a nice trail that leads to the lake and a loop around hiking trail (it’s nothing strenuous, takes about an hour). There are boats and kayaks you can use on the lake. The nearby town of Monticello has a few small restaurants, small grocery stores, and if you go a little ways, a Walmart. When we went there, pretty much all the stores were empty and closed down. If you’re willing to drive out though, it seems like there are pottery studios, antique shopping, and in certain seasons Farmers markets.
Very relaxing atmosphere and recommended for a weekend. I could not give it more stars since we’ve been to cottage areas in other states that we enjoyed much more. I think for the area though, it’s a nice little getaway.

Here’s the place to stay if you happen to find yourself in the vicinity of Monticello and need a bed. I recommend it highly in the summer, as there is a pool and beautful grounds: hiking in the area, a lake with rowboats. A really relaxing experience, and fairly priced. Definitely the best place to stay that I have found in this part of Sullivan County.
The staff is as pleasant as can be, the breakfasts are sumptuous, and fixings for lunch are available. Dinner is not served, but there are places to eat if you don’t mind driving a bit.
There is absolutely nothing to do in the area, and I’ve only stayed here in the spring and summer. But the hosts know their stuff, so I’ll bet they’ve figured out things for their guests to do. Frankly I’d not go here in the winter unless I had to, and so far I’ve not had to.
