Rhythms & Soul Dance Studio

After moving to Forest Hills, wanted to find a fun way to work out and got a promotional card from the Austin Street fair for here for a free class and decided to try it out. I went to a master class for zhumba which turned out to not be free because it was a «special» class, but decided to take the class anyway and dragged along two of my friends.
The class ended up only being 5 people total including my two friends and myself and the guest instructor was AWESOME. He was so fun and lively and though I had never taken zhumba before, it was easy to follow and fun for the whole 1.5 hours we were there. He also incorporated all other kinds of dancing, not just Latin so we got to get our 80s groove and jazz hands going, too!
My only complaint is that the main room is a little bit awkward in terms of set up. There is a big pillar right smack in the middle of the room that I kept bumping into or smacking my hand into by accident, so had to be careful to not hurt myself. Other than that, it was awesome. I do wish they had daytime classes also, but am willing to go at night again in the future.

My fiancé and I used Rythms and Soul to learn to dance for our wedding. Kelly was our instructor and she was great — so patient and a great teacher. She would make sure we completely understood the moves before moving on to the next one and added new moves each week so we could practice before getting too overwhelmed. I wish I had another reason to go back and learn a new dance!

I love this place! I go to several classes a week, and all the instructors I’ve met so far are top-​notch. Classes are small– the usual crowd is about 8 people, although more than that can feel tight because the rooms aren’t really big. (Of course, this is Queens, and I imagine you’d be hard-​pressed to find any really spacious dance studio anywhere.) I tried another salsa class at a different local place, and it was so incredibly packed that I literally walked right out– Rhythms is not like that at all. Another plus– there is a parking garage right across the street, and parking is only $ 3 once you get the discount sticker from the front desk. The staff is very friendly, and there are discounts on classes if you buy several at once.
I guess the only thing I don’t like is that the classes are open to anyone, anytime. This doesn’t sound bad, but if you are taking a class for beginners (like I do) you can expect to be learning the same things each week because new people come in each time, and the teachers want to include everyone. I would prefer if you could sign up for a four-​week class, say, and then each week you could build on what you learned the previous weeks. There are intermediate classes, though– and I’ll get there someday!
Overall, this is an awesome place to start out your adult dance classes! From the first time I came in I felt comfortable, which isn’t easy considering I’ve not had any dance instruction past ballet when I was a kid (and I wasn’t a very good dancer!). I always have lots of fun, and for me, that’s what it’s all about. There’s a very good introductory special, so I would recommend everyone to come try it out. Guys– this means you, too– especially the ballroom-​type classes where all the ladies need a partner!

I did Rhythms & Soul’s introductory deal of 2 weeks of unlimited group classes for $ 39, and they totally hooked me! I love the Tuesday night hip hop classes, where you learn a full choreographed routine in the space of about 5 weeks. Average class size is 6 – 8 people, so the instructor is able to give one-​on-​one attention when needed, and the space isn’t too crowded. Zumba is amazing too– if you love to dance, and you want a great workout, this is the class for you! I have never come out of there any less than drenched in sweat. They also have lots of ballroom classes, especially Salsa, and others such as bellydancing and African. Single classes cost $ 15, but
the price goes down when you buy in «bulk.»
My only tiny complaint is that the studio doesn’t really have a good changing area. They have a few small bathrooms, but there are no hooks to hang your stuff on, and not a lot of room. If they had a little changing/​locker room, it would be perfect!
