History

Established in 1962.

Thompson Building Materials was founded by Ken Thompson in 1962 in the (then) rural Southern California town of Tustin, CA. Thompson’s single cash-​and-​carry outlet has grown more than eightfold since then.

As the company grew so did our product selection, which we proudly showcase throughout our grounds.

With on site manufacturing and design center, you’re sure to find satisfaction with all your projects.

Been there a couple of times recently for some rocks. They have a really good selection, and the prices seem reasonable. The main reason for the 5 stars is for the customer service. We had Jose help us both times, and this guy is great. He’s knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. This guy is the definition of what great customer service should be like. It’s hard to find these days.

We come here often. We bought a great fig tree this summer, and it’s happy in the back yard. They have a lot of inventory that you will not find at other chain stores.

I’ve purchased over $ 50,000 of stone veneer, concrete pavers and other related items from the Fontana store in the past year. The yard is huge and has a ton of inventory but almost all of my orders had to be special ordered from the manufacturer with a short lead time for delivery. The guys on the order desk are pretty knowledgeable about their products but some are definitely better than others. George and Jesse were the most helpful. Sometimes I felt forgotten about while for status of orders. Language barrier creates additional difficulties in communicating with yard crew.

Customer service non existent walked around for almost an hour trying to pick stone for my pool without any one even batting an eye at us. They all just zipped by on there carts. Once I did get help it was obvious the poor kid had just been thrown to the wolves didn’t know the slightest thing about his product. As we neared a decision we started checking price and availability, nothing was available, one product they had on the wall was completely discontinued! Couldn’t even order it. Why leave it up then?
Needless to say we left and spent out money elswhere. What a waste of time.

yesterday my parents, their 2 dogs, and I went to the cherry location for our first time. the place was BEAUTIFUL! (I also appreciate the nice, clean restrooms).
every employee acknowledged us and offered assistance. we were SO impressed right away and it did not end!
unfortunately, in my excitement I set my purse down next to who knows what plant? next thing I knew, there was a search party of all of your employees! some AWESOME person found it and got it back to me! it was a beautiful reunion! haha! but, I am just so impressed with the staff! every single person was so friendly!!!

Just left Thompsons in Fontana. Well I guess they don’t need my business. This is the second time I’ve tried to buy merchandise there.. I can never find a sales person, and when I do they don’t speak English ! Needed five climbing roses, eight boxwood plants, and six lavender plants oh well I guess I’ll schlep all the way over to Louie’s nursery in riverside. (great help always) just thought I’d give this place a try it’s closer for me.

This place is a homeowner’s dream! My family has been coming here for years and seen many if it’s transformations; they have been getting better and better!
I would recommend this yard to anyone looking to redo their home. They have many more options than I’ve seen anywhere else. On-​site nursery, inventory, and showroom! I just can’t get over it. My husband and I will definitely be coming here and bringing friends!

I was not impressed with the nursery at all! Not one person around to ask about the plants/​flowers. Many plants had been there so long the roots out grew the pots they were in. Ants were everywhere. Way too expensive on the miscellaneous home furnishings and patio décor. Pots and planters were very over priced. It has gone down hill and I doubt I will ever go again.

My wife and I have been looking for brick veneer for over a month and our local material yards were all but useless with poor help and high prices. We ran into the Thompson’s crew at the Riverside home show a month earlier and decided to make the 40 mile drive to their location in Fontana.
We walked into a landscapers paradise which is 37 acres of everything necessary to complete most of our landscaping ideas. Every employee that we came across asked if we needed help, all were extremely friendly.
We told someone what we were looking for and we were hooked up with Sergio to help us. Within 5 minutes we found what we were looking for and were on our way to the cashier. I might also add that the price we paid was over 70% lower than our local yards.
We were very pleased with the ease and helpfulness of all involved with our purchase.
For any and all landscaping or building material projects we will definitely come here again and again.

My brother and I took our mother here for Mother’s Day (She likes to pick plants every year). I hadn’t been to Thompson’s in a while and I was pleasantly surprised by all of the changes. They have a much larger selection and they have really stepped up their customer service. They were handing out Mother’s Day gift bags and had free hot dogs and sodas. Everyone was very friendly. The prices are great so I ended up buying a ton of stuff.

Huge selection of products and a great place to get ideas. I do enjoy going there and wanted make a visit tomorrow with a friend from out of town. 3 stars for a very poor website that doesn’t even list the operating hours of each location and a voice mail without any information. Thank you but I don’t want to leave a message. I want to know what time you open tomorrow.

I love going to Thompson Building Fontana especially when they have customer appreciation events. They do face painting, Ruffles, and some foods, not to mention great products that I wish to buy them all! I also find their employees to be very helpful. I do not understand the negative reviews about this place at all.

This place is awesome. We are not going back to Home Depot or Lowes unless we absolutely have to or if they pay me.
This place has great products spread over 30 acres and everything you will need for your house. We went looking for actual flagstone pavers for our backyard flooring and found the most beautiful product at a reasonable price. Lowes and HD on the other hand have fake flagstone made out of concrete for the same price.
The flowers, trees, arbors, patio furniture, etc. is 10 times better and nicer than anywhere else. Not to mention the customer service is excellent. We were helped by Jesse and Armando who were extremely helpful and nice.
I he no clue what the other negative reviews are talking about. Those people must have had a single isolated incident — which we have all probably had at lowes and Home Depot but still go back because we thought there is nothing better or any other choices. Well this place is a better choice. We are going to be repeat customers and it is well worth the drive!

There is no doubt this business is a landscaper’s dream, however the service is below a one star rating. 80% of the employees are rude, arrogant and will not give you the time of day, especially if you are not fluent in Spanish. If you are fluent in Spanish take a moment to hear them talk behind your back and/​or talk behind each other’s back at the cashier. Do not be surprised if it seems like you are causing the employees an inconvenience by asking for help. If you do not speak landscaper or builder’s language be prepared for them to look at you like you are an idiot. My contractor refused to deal with them as well. I would highly avoid this business if at all possible, unless you are just looking for ideas. If the Better Business Bureau had an undercover team to assess customer service, this should be their first target.

This place is Disneyland if you are working on your yard, either front or back.
Oh how I wish I had the back yard for it ALL! From Fruit trees to palm trees, variety of tall and dwarf sets. Palm tree’s already planted in decorative planters to DIY. Great BBQ Islands, turf to real SOD. Plants needing shade to plants that you can put in direct sunlight. Tools to help you dig and tools to help you clip. Prices are pretty resonable. Staff was ok, but honestly, the nursery specialist was amazing. She answered all my questions, took the time to show me different plants and didn’t force anything on me. Rather told me to go home, look out my window and decide on what I want to see, ie Colors, tall/​short plants, etc and then come back and they will help me make my backyard oasysis come.
They have tropical to desert type plants, and lots of flowers. This is Definitely place to visit if you need ideas and if you’re like me, a blank back yard canvas!
