Western Beef

I seriously love this place! It has altered my experience in NY– I can afford to eat meat again! They have amazing cuts of all kinds of meat. Some of their prices are the absolute lowest I’ve ever seen, even cheaper than some southern states!
Don’t miss their bags of chicken– sometimes they have sales with thighs or other parts that are less than $ 1/​lb. Some are even $.49/​lb! Incredible.
I wish that their produce section had more variety, but they honestly have so much of everything else that I’m willing to let this slide, especially since you can dash over to Flushing or Elmhurst and get anything else there.
There’s a vendor outdoor and we tried the empanadas. Eh, they were only OK, but we were starving and knew better than to shop on an empty stomach.
TIPS: They have a parking lot across the street, so no worries about parking. Don’t take in any large bags because you’ll have to keep them up front. Excelletnt for bulk items like cornmeal (located in the produce department) and nuts.
You must try this place!

I’ve never been to Western Beef and heard great things about it, so I decided to stop and buy some Cold cuts. Everything seemed fine until I got home and noticed that the spiced ham I bought was spoiled. It totally grossed me out and pissed me off because now I had to drive back and deal with returning ¼ lb. of rotten ham. What made matters worse was the deli guy who cut the ham for me in the beginning didn’t know what to do and called the manager to solve the problem. It’s not like I wanted my money back… Just open a new one and let me go on my way… So this dude starts cutting the new ham and goes «YES» 2… I MEAN TWO (DOS) slices over ¼ lb. and takes it off the top and throws it on the counter. My goodness sake… I freaking had to drive back and you couldn’t leave those 2 slices there?!? Geez!!!
Needless to say, I won’t be going back to the deli department at this western beef.

Shitty place. They think their customers are thefts. They force customers to leave their bags at the front door or they won’t let you in. Rude staffs. Dirty place. Manager was also an ass. Taking my money else where.

Free parking. A great selection.
The supermarket is a kin to a maze. It seemed like they started out as a smaller business then decided to buy surrounding buildings and expand. You walked from one room to another to get to different sections of the supermarket and sometimes it was hard to remember how to get back to one section.
Checking out was painful. There was one cashier for five people waiting. There were employees walking around but they did not seem to want to open up another line.

I really wish there was an option of 0 stars. I absolutely hate this store, there is no shining aspect with the exception of them being semi-​affordable– but that’s all Western Beefs, they aren’t special.
First, the wait to checkout is disgusting. I’ve been in this store at all times of the day and it never fails that there is only one cashier ringing up customers while another 4 to 5 associates (including the self proclaimed assistant ‘manager’ but I’ll get to him a little later) having conversations, on their cell phones and God forbid if you ask one of them to open another register. One woman who works there, who’s name I’ve been meaning get and give to corporate, had such a disgusting attitude when I had asked and told me she didn’t ring on register while stuffing her face with a sandwich– a few days later, I came onto her line while she was, you guess it, ringing up customers. Disgusting attitudes, rude and they really make me want to stop shopping there.
The assistant manager, when I had asked to speak to him, could careless how many registers were open while he himself just stood around on his cell phone, conversing with above rude woman and just gawking a customers. I asked him for the corporate number to his store and he just stared at me, asking me several times to repeat myself before telling me there was no corporate number and he was the only person I could speak to. No corporate number? No apology for the 20minute wait behind six other angry customers on one line with a slow, incompetent cashier?
And the food is often of poor quality, rotten, bordering on rotten or just unappealing to the eye. And last I checked there should be open packages of meat just sitting in the refrigerated section? The whole place reeks and is unsanitary.
Overall, they suck. If you can avoid it, go any where else.

Good price but if you like fish, you’ll be disappointed because their fish selection is limited. You can only find a prepackaged frozen fish here. Their meat selection is big. If you love eating beef, chicken, & pork, you’ll most likely love the selection here. Their meat, dairy, & beer section is like a big fridge so bring a jacket.
Their bread is cheap. $ 1.79 for a French baguette. We can’t say much about their produce because we didn’t check out any when we were there. They also sell a lot of Latin & Carribean products.
The place looks old, nothing fancy. They have their own parking lot & it’s never packed. You’ll always find a spot. The exit tunnel to the parking lot on College Point Blvd is somewhat weird.

The supermarket does have all the items that you are looking for. It has it own private parking which makes coming in and out of the store convenient. However, the supermarket appears to be in 3 separate partitions. The middle partition which you have to pass through is a huge area that is refrigerated or for frozen items. It is really cold in their at times.
For those that are afraid of the cold, bring a jacket with you because you’ll be waling through a big fridge basically. I felt that with such a big area, that they could have partitioned this place a lot more efficiently.

Their own brand bread is only .99 cent any day all day! I come here to get limes because it is usually like $ 2 for like 8. I also come here for their huge meat section. I can get all kinds of meat for a family. They also got lots of cheese to choose. I love the Mexican cheese and they have it. Remember than Main St is mostly and mainly Asian supermarkets so by having Western beef here I can pick up my non Asian goodies. I love this market and they have their own parking lot. It is never a problem to find parking.

If I could give this store 0 stars I would. I am finally fed up with their second-​rate inventory and long lines at the check out counter. I will go out of my way to buy my groceries somewhere else. Western Beef, by virtue of what I outline below, has ceased to be an option. Perhaps if I didn’t have any experience with good grocery stores I would rate this place higher. But I do, and Western Beef is not how you should operate a grocery store. They benefit from being the only large grocery store in the area. If a better quality chain came along with similar prices this Western Beef would be out of business.
1) Their fruits and vegetables are of poor quality. I would guess they purchase the leftover inventory that was unsold to other, better stores. They are not fresh and rot more quickly than produce I buy elsewhere.
2) Their inventory is inconsistent. I’ve been going in there for unpopped popcorn for 3 years, and it is a guessing game as to whether or not they will have it in stock. This is an example of just one item. I’ve experienced this with countless other items.
3) There deli prepared foods are old. You take your chances. I would get sliced ham there and it would be slimy after a few days.
4) The worst fault of all is how much they make people wait to checkout. After not going there for a month or so I went yesterday to pick up some specific items that I cannot get at the predominately Asian markets in this area (of course they did not have 2 of the items). I got to the check out lines and there were only two open, and one of them was for 10 items or less — which is also not always open so I tried to never go in there for 2 or 3 items because I’d have to wait in a long line behind people with full carts. The ONE line open for people with more than 10 items was backed up to EIGHT. THIS IS AT 2 O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON! And the people behind the registers are really slow with no help bagging. I asked for a manager and all he could tell me was that he didn’t have anybody else for the register. That is one more indication of how poorly run the store is. He should have people trained who can fill in at register as demand requires.
In a nutshell, this is an awful store in service and inventory. The one thing it has going for it is that it is cheap. And it is an example that you get what you pay for.

You name it and they got it. They have everything from cheeses to fresh bread in there bakery to cleaning supplies. There huge walk in freezer feels nice in summer. However I took a star off because they ALWAYS have long lines with only 2 or 3 registers open out of like 10.

I have been to this place at all different times of day and at different days of the week the one thing that is consistent here is that you will have a horrible deli experience. I am sure slicing meat is not a fun way to spend your day but why crap on me? It is always the same attitude from all of their counter staff.
They hate you for ordering anything. They don’t ever ask how you like it cut and then don’t weigh it until it is way over whatever you asked for. Want a pound of cheese ask for ¾ and you’ll be good.
Also would it kill them to use the meat slicer for it’s intended purpose? If I wanted big thick slices of ham I would purchase a pack of ham steaks. I am not asking for paper thin but at least make it so that I can put more than one slice on a sandwich
I was once a weekly shopper here because they usually have good prices on other groceries but between the angriest deli staff in America and the clueless front end people I drop by only in emergencies and even then dread the experience.

The stuff is cheap, oh man is it cheap. They have a great selection of deli foods too. Walk in refrigerator with meats by the pound at cheap prices i can’t find anywhere else. A lot of ethnic things here too, its great. I like to think of it as a great example of the diversity we can find in queens all under one roof. Place is quite dirty though

The deli meat guys are good, and the outside food vendor are good too.

I go by this western beef all the time to get refreshments after the gym or a day in flushing meadows. They have a snack bar right outside that sells pizza, french fries and other types of food but i always come here to get an italian sausage on a roll. it always has a slight char like how it tastes when you get one in little italy san gennaro fest and they serve it with fried onions. No peppers sadly but sometimes I like to come here on my way back just to pick one up. It gets a little sloppy but sometimes i just want something different. I have also tried the roast pork platter here and i will tell you– do not bother its cooked but there is really not much flavor and has a slight stale taste like old oil. Go for the pizza or fried stuff or get an italian sausage.
A lot of the local laborers eat here and so do some of the park employees. Ive seen them drive a golf cart over just to pick up an order. Or i have seen them gathered around in the morning for breakfast or coffee. I think because its on college point and right next to the home depot but I am usually the only girl standing out here when i order so i only go in the afternoon.
As for the supermarket this is the place i go for holiday food shopping. They usually have good deals that they post out in the window so keep a lookout. But they serve fresh deli meats, lots of different canned goods and fresh produce and they have a stocked cheese section and even a small bakery with fresh bread and bagels and rolls. but the best reason is to come here to check out the fresh meat section. its like a gigantic frozen meat locker. Bring a ski mask and some mittens but dont make any sudden movements or they will think you are trying to rob the place but at least your nose and your fingers wont fall off. Nice for a romp in the summertime to cool you off. they have flintstone size portions here. I usually get the giant steaks or huge slabs of ribs or a box of their freshly made spicy or non spicy italian sausages which i bring to every bbq that i go to. They call them «family size» good for feeding lots of people.
Another plus is that they have a parking lot which is good because you will need a car for the bajungaload of stuff you just got inside. Be careful though cuz its very difficult to pull out of this lot.
Bring your car, come here for the meat and if you get hungry check out the snack bar.
Unilocal 100 Challenge: Review #3

This is my one stop shop supermarket. I buy literally EVERYTHING here from my monster drinks (2 bucks a pop), porterhouse steaks (very thinly cut and tender), lamb shoulder steaks, turkey slice meats for sandwiches, vegetables, whole wheat bread, fruits to beverages. I love it here because it’s close by and everything is at the lowest price compared to all the other local supermarkets.
The manager is a bit on the rude side at times when customers gets upset. For example, I was there grocery shopping last week and witness a hilarious incident. I was waiting on line with a few other customers to get checked out. The receipt paper got jammed and the cashier wasn’t able to get it out. We were all waiting for a good 10 minutes for him to unjam it. All the other lines were very packed so I decided to stay on this one, hoping he’ll fix it soon. One of the customers were cursing and yelling at him because it took so long so the manager came to settle things. He was cursing back at them haha!!! I know it was unprofessional but it was so funny to watch. But isn’t the customer always right?
Regardless of the customer service, this place is as cheap as groceries can get. I’m sure BJ’s or Costco’s have better deals, but I live alone and I don’t need things in bulks.

Among all the Western Beef I have visited, this location is one of the cleanest and well managed.
They have a large parking lot.
The food items are well stacked their shelves.
I the summer this is a busy place for BBQ items like chicken, beef, lamb, and pork.

During the summer, I love perusing the grocery store circulars for skirt steaks, ribeye steaks and porterhouse steaks. I love going through Western Beef’s circular on their website.
On several occasions I have seen skirt steak at Western Beef at a steal. I think it was at about almost but not yet $ 3/​lb. That is cheap for skirt steak.
I also like the flavored seltzer waters I get at Western Beef. They have a bakery department too in the store where they bake their breads fresh all the time.
This store’s aisles are a bit tight but it is okay sized.
The highlight is their refrigerated section. It is really really really really really really cold in the refrigerated section so be aware of that and you will need a parka or coat or something to cover yourself or you’ll freeze to death. Which at that point, they might butcher you up, package the meat up and sell it.
The refrigerated section is in the middle of the store. You will have to go through it to get to other sections of the store. It connects the building. You can’t get to the produce from the grocery section of this store without going through deep freeze… unless you walk outside and go around the building. There are two entrances. One entrance/​exit is on the produce side and the other entrance/​exit is at the grocery side of the store.
In the refrigerated section you will find a ton of meat that is sold either on meat trays where the meat is cut up into pieces or you will see gigantic hunks of meat where it is not cleaned or cut up yet. The meat that is sold in the bulk form is cheaper than the meat in trays. There is a butcher in the back who can cut up the meat for you if you plan to buy the bulk meat. In the bulk meat section, need to purchase the entire hunk o’ meat. In the refrigerated room, there is also frozen stuff, some provisions, ton of eggs, yogurt, milk, cold juice, etc. It’s a pretty nice sized room.
They also have a deli section.
Parking has never been a problem. There are two parking lots. One is the main lot that leads you to the grocery section of the store. There is a secondary parking lot across the street from the produce section of the store. The secondary lot is on a shady side of the building but if you go early enough in the day where there is still light, it should be fine.
The prices are pretty reasonable at Western Beef, IMHO. It’s not a fancy store. Western Beef sells basic items as well as latin grocery products.

The poor man’s supermarket. Tacky sale posters all over the windows and everything. Best to come here on weekday afternoon. The parking lot is dead empty. What I like most about all Western Beef’s is their refrigerated meat section. They got everything from chicken, pork, sausages, ribs, steaks, and more all organized in this section of the market.
Verdict — There’s no Western Beef rewards card or anything like that but you do save money at Western Beef. It’s much cheaper than Stop & Shop, Shop Rite, and Waldbaums. It’s a pretty ideal place to get meats for a summer cookout and their prices are quite reasonable.

Waltz in there and you’ll realize…, it’s all business. People come here for one reason…, ingredients. Quality ingredients at wholesale prices.
Different quadrants calls for different thermometer settings. Their meat department is soo big, that the entire area is kept at a chill temperature. It can’t be more than 40 degrees in there. Rows and rows of all cuts and types of meat that you can think of. It’s a carnivore’s paradise.
No barbeque experience is complete without a visit to Western Beef.
ps: if you want the freshest poultry possible, there’s a poultry market right across the street.
