Learn-Rite Driving School

The instructor wasn’t too helpful. He would get into weird conversations while I was driving and if he was not doing that he played games on his phone. While he was supposed to be teaching me. I only did 5 lessons and I feel like that was a good decision because any more would have been a waste of my time.

I took 25+ lessons with Learn-​Rite Driving School (Queens location) after realizing that I needed more practice driving. When I first took my road test two years ago in White Plains, NY, I barely had any driving experience and I did not know all of the rules, which led me to fail. Two years later, I decided that I really should prioritize getting my license. At the age of 24, and being a native New Yorker, I felt that it was really important for me to «hurry up» and get my driver’s license so I can start having the freedom to drive everywhere. Since no one in my immediate family has a car, I obtained most of my driving experience by using Learn-​Rite Driving School.
I began taking driving lessons in August 2015 and finished taking my lessons on December 30, 2015, the same day as my road test. Originally, I had David as my instructor from August 2015 until November 2015. David is really down to Earth and very calm. He gives you a lot of positive feedback and isn’t extremely critical. However, once he left in November 2015, I switched to Wendy. I actually liked Wendy a lot because she is a tough cookie and does not sugar coat anything. She will give you the honest truth so that you can be a better driver.
With the 25+ lessons, I passed my road test on 12/​30/​2015 in Whitestone, Queens :-D. You can have no more than 30 points taken off from your road test when you take the test, and I had 25 points deducted. I excelled on the 3 point turn and the parking because Wendy gave me really good tips.
The one thing I highly recommend, though, is sticking with one instructor throughout all of your lessons. All of the driving instructors are good, but because they have their own style of instruction, it may throw you off and you may have to re-​learn some techniques. Going from David to Wendy was a bit of a hard transition for me because I was used to David’s style of teaching, so I had to adjust to Wendy once he transferred over to the Learn-​Rite location in Manhattan.
Overall, this is a great school and I highly recommend taking driving lessons with this school. You have a high chance of passing your road test if you take at least 10 driving lessons with this school.

I didn’t have good experience with them. Really they want you already know something about driving if not you waste your time and money. Very sad but is the truth.

This school gets 5 stars, though 4.9 out of these 5 stars belongs to their driving instructor Rebecca. Like most New Yorkers, I never drove a car before my first lesson with her. I purchased a total of 15 lessons & the 5 Hour Required Pr-​Licensing class with Elizabeth (both taken in Flushing) and passed my road test on the FIRST try. Here is why Rebecca made the difference for me:
— She took the time to learn my driving style, strengths and weaknesses and talked me through what to expect. Her guidance was firm but never pressuring, constructive and helpful in how to improve.
— If you are like me, you overthink everything, including driving. Rebecca explains the why for every turn and stop which made me confident behind the wheel because I knew why I did what I did. Confidence behind the wheel is easily 80% of driving and passing the test, so this was huge.
— She always checked in to see how I was doing with lessons. She was always extremely professional and on-​time, and it made me want to always be sure I was on time for her. She books a FULL MONTH in advance for a reason. She is a hot commodity so if you book, stick and commit!
The school themselves has a very friendly, professional staff. Even during a scheduling mix-​up, they were patient and accommodating and took the time to explain their refund policy (they do *not* refund missed classes for any reason, which is fair given instructors’ schedules).
I can’t say enough about this school or Rebecca who on a personal level is warm, funny, direct and truly invested in her students. If you want to learn to drive FOR REAL and with confidence, take your classes here. Learn-​Rite and Rebecca were worth every single penny!

Finally passed my road test thanks to Wendy! Great experience. Having failed with other schools twice before, Wendy did everything necessary to make sure I passed. So happy!

I first purchased the 5 — One hour lesson package, and by the 4^th lesson, I realized I was absolutely not prepared for the test. The receptionist was nice about it and allowed me to upgrade my package to the 10 lessons by just paying the difference.
I took the five hour video course with Elizabeth in the Manhattan location, as it was more convenient for me.
The classes I took in Queens with Wendy, and Wendy only, and she was so calm and patient with me, even though it was my first time driving and was making mistakes and had bad judgement. As luck would have it, my very first lesson happened to be on a day when it was pouring! Since it was my first lesson, she recommended that I rescheduled for another day because it will be hard to drive, especially for someone with no experience with cars. Thank goodness we agreed to rescheduled, because if not, I would probably be extremely nervous and freaked out and have some sort of panic attack on the road. Wendy is extremely professional and made me feel so at ease behind the wheel. The lessons were interesting, and there really wasn’t a dull moment during our lessons. She would explain to me the difference with driving for the road test, and driving in real life, and would help me understand how to do both. While I was not ready by lesson number 4, I learned everything I needed to know by lesson 5, and basically spent the rest of my package just driving around and practicing my driving skills, for both the test and the real world. Whenever there was something off with my driving, she was very good at letting me know what the problem was, and how to work on those areas.
On the day of my road test, Wendy would give tips on what to watch out for, and to study the traffic patterns & surrounding areas since there was a wait before my test began. This helped immensely because I was then prepared and had a good idea of what I was to be expecting on the test. On top of it all, she constantly reminded me to remember to breathe!

I’ve only taken one driving lesson with this school. I’ve taken driving classes with a previous driving school (ten ten driving school, make sure you check my review before applying there.) I had such a terrible experience with my previous driving school that I lowered my expectations. I was really surprised at how professional the instructor was! She spoke fluent English without an accent and gave many helpful tips! You can clearly see how much damage my previous driving school has inflicted on me through this review.

It’s a great experience that I had with David he is a great instructor and showed what I need it to learn not only for my test but for my entire life. I highly recommend David I passed my road test and I am very happy thank you David and learn-​rite driving school,.

Decided to learn how to drive before my big move from NYC to Cali. David was the best! Super smart, super clear, and meticulous in everything it would take to pass. He prides himself on students not just being good enough, but mastering the road. The five hour course with Elizabeth also flew by. Everyone at Learn-​rite are nice, supportive, and invested in their student’s passing. I can’t recommend the school enough, especially David!

Ok, so at age 40 something: P I decided to get my driving license, there’s nothing I can say to describe the freedom and independence I accomplished with the help of my Instructor Carlos, so much patience this man has, at times I thought he’ll quit on me but no, he was always encouraging and never doubted that I was going to get my license, he always knew it and sure enough I got my license on the first try!!! I recommend this school to everyone that thought… I can’t drive, I just can’t, guess what? With Learn– Rite Driving School, you can and you will drive! :)

i rarely give compliments but this school deserves it.
The office is very organized.
I tried a few different driving schools and I couldn’t get a decent instructor, someone who would actually tell me what I am supposed to do.
Price is not among the cheapest but still fair.
My first instructor was Rebecca, she is good but won’t tell you exactly how to do things, she is more into «practice and I’ll tell you if you do something wrong» unfortunately that doesn’t work very well with me, I need guidance, I need to know step by step how and what to do.
if you want to get your license in the summer a road test is scheduled 6 – 8 weeks from the day you apply for the road test. I started my lessons with Rebecca 3 weeks before my road test, Rebecca is very busy and always fully booked, I asked for extra lessons but Rebecca had no availability, she was even booked the day of my road test! I was freaking out so i contacted the owner of the company, Elizabeth, who was great and immediately added some lessons with Carlos.
Based on my personality, Carlos’ lessons were so much more helpful to me, he was extremely super very patient and explained EVERYTHING, literally, he gave me tricks to drive, turn, park ., everything has a trick, he gave me tricks on how to remember every step (gear, wheel, signal etc). he was super very chilled and easy to work with.
Carlos took me to my road test, I didn’t think I was ready, he thought I was (Rebecca thought so too).
I passed, first try (and I hate driving!) And I thank Carlos for it.
It’s a little hike to get there from Manhattan but it’s totally worth it.
Maybe I am going to miss my lessons a little, not much though! maybe I will just go back because I need an extra brake in the car to feel safe: D

I decided to finally learn to drive at 25.
I picked Learn-​Rite after reading a number of Unilocal reviews for different schools and instructors. The 5 hour lesson with Elizabeth was easy and painless. I took 7 total lessons — 2 with Wendy and the rest with David in the East Village.
I practiced on my own and passed today, on my 2^nd attempt at the road test.
Everyone at Learn-​Rite is patient, encouraging and helpful. David was a great instructor and pushed me to be confident and relax my nerves while driving.

Quick Review: I took my driving test today and PASSED! I Absolutely 100% recommend Learn-​Rite driving school. They are super professional instructors with tons of patience, techniques, and great personalities. I had several of the instructors in lessons and I can’t say anything bad about any of them.
Longer Review: about 6 weeks ago I learned that I needed to relocate to Chicago by the end of June. I did my research and Learn-​Rote had great reviews. After a very easy sign up process, I took my 5 hour course with Elizabeth and I knew I had made a good decision. The New York State required 5 hour course is nothing to write home about, but Elizabeth did an amazing job of making it entertaining. I definitely walked away with tons of new knowledge.
Now for the driving course. I never had a licence, but I’ve driven before. It had been 15 plus years since the last time I was in a car. This is to say I was pretty nervous about the experience. Because I needed an expedited lesson, I was given several instructors. All in all, I had four Learn-​Rite instructors.
Wendy and Brandon I only had for one session each, but they were both great. Wendy was very intentional with her feedback. It was clear that she had a plan for teaching students. She would say things like «parking is lesson 3» or «three point turns is lesson number 2.» Brandon was awesome. Very professional. Had tons of little pointers that I quickly learned and totally kept. Both would be awesome people to take lessons with.
I took 3 lessons with Rebecca. She was great! She made me feel very relaxed and quickly calmed my nerves when it came to being behind the wheel. She also had great pointers that I walked away with. She thought me how to do 3 point turns! Unfortunately, our schedules conflicted and I couldn’t finish my 10-​lesson experience with her, otherwise, I would have.
Now for the biggest rock star at Learn-​Rite — DAVID! That dude is incredible. I took 5 lessons and went to the road test with him. David is a great instructor. When I needed him to be understanding and patient, he was. When I needed someone to lay down the law and push me, he did that. Because of his persistence and attention to detail, I passed on the first time and only 5 lessons with him. He was just a cool dude. I highly recommend him.

Rebecca was my instructor she was and is the best of the best! She made me handle the car on our first day knowing that Ive never driven a car before. She built my confidence right during our first lesson. She is a very honest person too and will tell you what you need to work on more and will help you overcome it. Not only is she funny, but she always encourages her students to do well. Take Rebecca! You will never regret it!

I’d allowed my license to expire long ago and hadn’t driven in over 10 years. After hearing stories about how difficult and what a chafe it is to get a license from scratch in NYC I was braced for the worst… except I was lucky enough to attend what I’ll bet is the best school in the area, Learn-​Rite in Flushing!
I took my 5-​hour pre-​licensing class in their Manhattan office (closer to where I live). Elizabeth was an engaging presenter whose organized mix of different formats (including videos, quizzes, etc) kept things fresh and interesting: the five hours went by in a snap.
Brandon was my instructor for my five classes behind the wheel in Flushing. Thanks to Brandon’s patient, professional, and methodical approach, I became more confident behind the wheel and also very aware of common pitfalls and my own bad habits… long story short, I passed the road test! Thanks again Brandon!!!
(PS one of the best things about Learn-​Rite in Flushing is lunching after each lesson and road test. Go to White Bear Dumpling, New World Mall Food Court and New York Food Court around the corner from White Bear, especially Siblings Potato Noodles. And yes, if I get around to writing up reviews for those places I’ll likely slip in a plug for Learn-​Rite)

About 5 years ago, I took 10 driving lessons and the 5 hour course at a nameless driving school and ended up needing another 10 lessons. After purchasing all those lessons, I still felt insecure and shaky driving a vehicle. So when I took my road test and failed within the first 3 minutes, there was no surprise.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago, I began looking for another driving school in the hopes that I could finally get my license. After seeing positive reviews I decided to sign up at the learn-​rite driving school. I did the 5 lessons and the 5 hour course. Customer service was great, and they set me up with an primary appointment for the following week, home pick-​up included.
My instructor was Brandon, and it was a phenomenal experience. He integrated the rules of the road into the lessons in a casual and easy-​to-​remember way. He sort of follows a system as well, where you lead up to a mock test and he gauges and candidly tells you the areas you excel in and the areas you should work on.
The five hour course was entertaining and never boring. I remember they pulled me out for five minutes to schedule my road test and I was peeking back into the room, anxious that I would miss something. We also did the ‘walk across a line with inebriated goggles’ thing, which was fun (and disorienting — a great lesson!)
I took my road test on March 5^th. The difference I felt sitting in the drivers seat five years ago and sitting in the drivers seat after my 5 lessons with learn-​rite was night and day. And after a very brief test, I passed!
Absolutely recommend this school, especially if you are in the Flushing area. The instructors are great, scheduling classes and a road test are easy (you even get to pick your location!). So glad I found this school!

I wanted to wait until I received the official piece of paper to rate this school — but they gave me so much confidence in my driving that there was no doubt in my mind that I’d pass!
I started with zero driving experience (just the questions on the permit test), and decided at age 30 it was finally time for this New Yorker to learn.
I purchased the 5-​hour class + 10 lessons package, a reasonable price compared to most of the schools in the area. My wife signed up for the same package, but even when she needed to add another 5 lessons, they still quoted her the same low «bulk» price she would have paid had bought them all up-​front! Very generous!
The 5-​hour class was a very interactive session, with an even mix of presentation, videos, and Q&A. They didn’t treat the class as just a formality — they used it to lay the foundation for what you need to pass the final road-​test! Elizabeth was a great instructor.
Our driving instructor was Rebecca. She is a WONDERFUL woman with a tremendous amount of experience. You can find plenty of reviews of her on Unilocal and from LearnRite and her past companies. Her teaching-​style is largely hands off (only uses the brake when she has to), but her instruction leaves you confident in execution of maneuvers, not just tricks. I didn’t feel like I was going to pass the road test because I had the gimmicks down, I felt that I truly knew where the car would be going, either in forward or reverse, at all times. The lesson agendas are also largely driven by your level of confidence — in later sessions she was willing to teach me lane-​changes on high-​traffic roads (Northern Boulevard) and other skills that aren’t required to pass the test.
The vehicles they use are relatively modern (most had under 50,000 miles — ours was a Toyota Corolla). The skills they teach though are easily transferable — I was able to switch to driving a Toyota Highlander (about 2x the size) with only a few minutes of transition.
Another nice perk was the at-​home pick-​up. While you’re much closer to the practice area if you leave from the office, they’re fairly flexible about coming to get you if you’re only a few minutes away. I do recommend that you don’t count on that though — even though you’re technically in control of the vehicle for the full hour from the time they pick you up to the time they drop you off — you might end up taking 10 – 15 minutes driving a stretch of road just to get to an area suitable for turns /​parking. That’s key time you’ve lost.
The review wouldn’t be complete without a shout-​out to the office admins. They were there handling re-​scheduling around the clock, handling all the paperwork for you including the DMV test schedules, and providing tons of information on the process back to front. You spend almost no time on bureaucracy, just driving!
We will definitely be back for defensive driving. And we will be sure our friends return as well!

This was my 2^nd time taking my road test and I passed. Although, I still did pretty bad on the road test… it’s a fact that it was all due to my nerves. My instructor, Wendy is amazing. She’s patient, and explains everything clearly. If you want to focus on something a little more, she’ll work with you on it. I took my first road test almost 3 years ago, and now I’m 21 and I finally got my license.
The 5 hour class was entertaining, and fun. Although I still am a nervous wreck when it comes to driving under pressure, practice makes perfect! Awesome school. Def. would recommend.

I got my license. That’s about all Learn Rite accomplished. I got the package with a five hour class and five 45 minute lessons and let’s just say it was a very big disappointment and a colossal waste of money.
The five hour lesson wasn’t bad because Elizabeth was entertaining but I was eager to start driving immediately. I got an instructor named Brandon and I was super excited!
Brandon was not, in my opinion, a good teacher. By the time I had my fourth lesson, I could still barely drive and it was just an awful experience. Between his cologne/​cigarette soaked car and sarcastic tone, Brandon also became increasingly indifferent when it came to our lessons. He never tried to correct me and just suggested that I pay for more lessons which was ridiculous because I had driven before and one lesson was $ 40.
Then, a beacon of light that is Rebecca entered my life. She was an amazing instructor and in the two extra lessons I paid for, I learned how to park and turn ten times better than the way Brandon taught. She was also hilarious and interesting and lessons with her flew by but I learned the most while with Rebecca! She’s the reason for my two stars, you go Rebecca.
Come the day of my actual road test, which I had pushed back two months because j did not feel prepared before I had Rebecca, scheduled for 9:00AM, I got to the office at 8:00 as the i had been told by Brandon to be early since he was the one taking me to my road test. This was in November so it was around 20 degrees outside and I waited around forty minutes outside the CLOSED office for Brandon to pick me up to go to my road test. What should’ve been over in half an hour dragged on for an hour and a half. In addition, once I got to my road test Brandon decided it would be a good idea to get out of the car and have a smoke with his buddy, who I assume is another driver from Learn Rite. I passed (barely) so I have Learn Rite to thank but I just don’t have many positive things to say about the driving school.
TLDR; bottom line: avoid unless you’re always early and demand REBECCA when they schedule your lessons.
*I didn’t have any other instructors so this review may be biased but trust me, you want Rebecca.

Because relying on buses and trains in Queens to get you where you need to go is giant pain in the ass, I bit the bullet and set out to learn to drive. I picked Learn Rite based on all the positive reviews on Unilocal.In all honesty, the school is top notch and the staff is super helpful.
David was my driving instructor all my lessons and he was great. He really instilled confidence in my behind the wheel and made sure I was ready for the road test, which I passed recently.
I really could not be happier with this school.
