Hong Kong Supermarket of Flushing

A very eerie feel — lots of the aisles are empty, and there are relatively few shoppers for a Chinese supermarket. Looking past that initial impression, the store itself is actually not bad. I’m a bit wary of the produce given the low turnover, but I bought some that looked fresh and it turned out okay.
Like its sister store in Manhattan, there are two levels, with the lower level consisting primarily of housewares and dried goods. This place probably has a large selection of kitchen supplies than any other supermarket in Flushing. Prices are for the most part reasonable and comparable to other stores in the area.

The whole first floor is basically filled with sauces. It’s a little confusing to navigate.
Some of cashiers seem to only speak Chinese.

The first word that comes to mind when going to this supermarket is the word stinky. This place is stinky! The outside is stinky and the inside is stinky. But… they carry a pretty extensive line of American products that are marked considerably cheaper than other supermarkets in the Flushing area. For that reason, also throw in the fact that the cashiers are speedy and the place not at all crowded (it used to be but with the influx of newer and bigger supermarkets coming in the area it’s lost much of it’s business), this place gets an additional two stars. Otherwise, I would’ve given this place a one because… did I mention this place is… stinky!

I like coming here for Asian groceries that I normally wouldn’t be able to get at a regular American supermarket. They recently renovated so all the shelves have a nice new look and they even opened up other another floor in the basement. So now you practically have double the space. Nicely done, Hong Kong Supermarket. However, is this place necessarily better than other supermarkets? Not really. For produce, I usually go elsewhere because I don’t get the impression they have the freshest around. And for prices, they’re about the same. This place is big and location is great. That’s what it has going for it.

This supermarket is huge compared to some other supermarkets in the area, and compared to the one in Chinatown. This supermarket has been here for quite some time.
There are many isles and the format of the store and where the items are located has more or less been the same.
I would be very careful when buying things at this supermarket and any other supermarket, where they might trick you into buying meat or fish. Although you think you’re getting a good piece, they might hide unwanted items such as bones and fillers underneath your selected meat, so it’ll weigh more, in turn allowing the item to weigh more so you’ll pay more.
In addition, a lot of items might appear to now have an expiration date. Many times if it’s not wipe off by staff there, they’ll block it off with the price sticker so you won’t know when the item expires until its too late. Very dishonest.
I’m giving it some stars because it’s a big supermarket and you can generally pick everything up all in one shot and they do have a good amount of sale items. But just be careful with your items, always check for expiration dates, if they have it, I would leave it on their shelf. Always check that they don’t give you unwanted fillers for your meat and fish. I wouldn’t come back here since parking is not the easiest here.

Lapin and I came here after the Mets game to explore the neighborhood. I saw a sign that they had live crab for $ 3 a pound but when I went in to ask for assistance, the man at the fish department looked at me like I was insane. The store looks like it was going through construction which makes me wonder of the cleanliness of the place since their tanks were open below the construction work.
In the middle of the store, they had a bunch of out of service freezer which look like a graveyard. The produce looked a bit meh and seems like they had seen better days. The fresh fish section is a bit paltry compared to others but priced competitively. The frozen food section is vast but most of the items were not properly priced. Which brings me to my next qualm about this place, they put one price on the shelf and when we went to the register they charged something else. Which was very sneaky of them.

I’m glad they are remodeling and expanding to add another level at the basement so it’s now almost twice the size now. But what I noticed is that their prices are much higher now. Today is the first time in my life that I walked out of any supermarket without buying anything. They still have great sale items but it’s just hit or miss sometimes. I will still go there every now and then for convenience of im near but I don’t think I will be buying truckloads like I usually buy at other supermarkets.

I bought a piece of pork belly and had the clerk cut and packed it for me. The clerk was so nice to me. He smiled all the time. I was so happy and did not check into the package he prepared. I went home. On Sunday, I opened the package and was about to cook, I saw pork belly on the surface of the package, but many BONES, inside the package. The pork belly covered the bones. I feel being ripped off! I will try not to go to them again. Had I had to, I would check them thoroughly!

Hong Kong supermarket is going through a transformation. They are getting somewhat of a modern face lift. The aisles are no longer just straight up and down. They split the aisles in half so that you can maneuver and move around the aisles easily. They also have another floor because they opened up their basement. The store is very big and everything is spread out but they are still in their growing phase because you can see that there is still some construction going on. but it really is going to be nice when it’s done.
When you first enter the supermarket you will immediately notice that they have more freezer cases. Their produces section and the seafood and meat department is still on the main floor. If you don’t like the crowds in Main Street (it can get really crowded) and just want to one stop shop this is the place to go. As with any supermarket, they may have some items which can be a good deal and some which maybe a little more expensive, but with one stop shopping its worth it.

They’re in the middle of renovations. What does that mean? The fresh produce areas reek of paint. Everything else was super dusty. So, proceed with your purchases with great care!
In terms of selection, I couldn’t find a lot of stuff. Maybe it’s because they’re under construction, but there was barely a person available to ask. Overall, pretty disorganized.
Go elsewhere, esp until they’re done renovating!

It’s a large supermarket and while I didn’t need a whole lot of everything, they have this huge mass of a floor of a supermarket with really nothing much to buy. It smells funky and as far as supermarkets go, it isn’t at all welcoming or appetizing. We did pick up some bananas??? Meh.

Stinky sidewalk and a stinky supermarket! Not even a box of Febreeze could help this poor supermarket. Let’s start with the side entrance on 37^th avenue. There’s always a puddle of nauseating water that reeks of sewage and rotten seafood. They never hose or scrub it down, the color of the sidewalk pavement is actually nearly black! The inside of the supermarket appears bright, each aisle is pretty organized but the butcher and seafood area… that’s a different story! The stench travels throughout the supermarket and out to the street especially during hot summer days. It’s really difficult to bare.

As others mentioned, the produce aisle/​section of this place doesn’t carry the freshest produce you can find in Flushing, but it’s OK. Definitely no rotting vegetables (like the kind I sometimes find at Trader Joe’s).
I like the candy/​junk food/​sweets selection and the good prices. This place definitely is competitive in terms of prices compared with other supermarkets in Flushing.
What makes this place really stand out positively in my mind, is that it’s cleaner than most of the supermarkets I’ve been to in Flushing, and more importantly almost, the customer service here is good. That’s a rare find in Flushing, among Chinese and Korean places in general.

General Warning: I used to live in a very predominantly Asian quarter of a city where I was spoiled with so many choices of Asian groceries, and therefore the competitions were fierce.
Walking along Main Street in Flushing, you won’t even realize its presence due to its location. It’s inside a building. Hint: go through the door on 37^th side, I think it should be where the entrance is since the veggies are there.
Anyhow, I was quite pleased to be able to find general staples like noodle, sauce, etc. Since I was in no rush, I took a deeper look on its fresh produce section only to find that it’s so lacking in variety. They don’t even have my favorite Chinese broccoli. Neither do they have the finger-​sized bananas.
For the time being, it does the trick. But I have a feeling I need to import my Asian groceries back from my home state.

I come here because they carry a whole bunch of stock, and you can more or less do a one stop in here, but the fruit and vegetables are usually not very good and the prices overall are not that competitive.
The meats/​fish are of better quality, and a decent refrigerated aisle too.

Hong Kong Supermarket was here before so many other competitors came to Flushing and tried to outdo it. For some reason, it’s survived this many years when there are those that have not.
The vegetables here are usually not the freshest, but the selection available here on items like Asian candies, cookies, other snacks, teas, coffees, etc. are usually among the most competitively priced in Flushing.
It should be emphasized that my experiences with most of the staff here have been positive. They’re generally extremely friendly, which is significant for a Chinese grocery store. Heck, this would matter a great deal in any supermarket.

It has all the essential products in what a supermarket should have. Whenever I walk into the HK supermarket, it’s like my second home; I’ve gone shopping here since when I was a little girl with my mom. Everything is still the same, staffs don’t bother you; you go there to shop what u need.

This is a huge HK Supermarket location. It is cleaner than their other locations. The one in Manhattan is TIGHT. The one in Flushing is my favorite and there is parking in the bank’s lot behind the market after 5pm and on the weekends but you need to buy a minimum of $ 10 worth of stuff at the store and you only get an hour… unless they changed that rule.
I like HK supermarket. My favorite supermarket. They have everything I need that other Chinese supermarkets dont have. They have the Shrimp Chips I like. They carry Amoy brand oyster sauce that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE more so than Lee Kum Kee brand. I noticed other Chinese markets dont carry Amoy. I dont know why. They carry Mung Bean Threads that also no one else carries. I dont know why other Chinese markets dont carry these essentials. I mean who doesn’t need good Shrimp chips, oyster sauce and Mung Bean threads!!!
Other essentials, tofu, egg noodles, Prime Foods brand dumplings, sugar free soy milk, Chinese sausage, ramen noodles, Vermont House Curry cubes, fish, meat, EVERYTHING Chinese/Asian…all here. YAY.
Prices are always decent! And cheaper than other places too, sometimes.
Sometimes after 9pm I see the sushi man outside selling his sushi at lowered prices. End of night stuff from HK Supermarket. Check that out! The time he comes out varies… sometimes he comes out at 8:30pm.

More like 3.5. Average supermarket, but the plus half a star is for the free one hour parking after 5 and on weekends. Also it’s fun to get free samples on the weekends too.
The produce is not as fresh as other Chinese supermarkets in the area.

The service is a lot better than the one at the former East Broadway, Chinatown Manhattan location. I would come here a lot with my family on weekends when we Yum Cha in Flushing.
There are no fresh fruits to be sold at this location though, thus the four star rating.
