Powersource Martial Arts was founded by Andre Campos, with whom I have trained for years at the Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu world headquarters in Chicago. He has since achieved a black belt in BJJ and still contributes his teaching at Carlson’s in addition to balancing his own program at Powersource.
Andre is an upright and ethical person, a true martial artist. Despite his accomplishments, his ego remains down to earth. He continues to study and improve himself as a way of life, and this comes across to motivate the best from his students and colleagues.
Unlike most other dedicated BJJ instructors, Andre also is a world class Judo competitor and coach. Many years ago, the developmental paths of Judo and BJJ diverged. Both traditions have suffered for this; BJJ practitioners became poor at throwing, and Judoka poor at ground work.
But Andre is one of the few who has attained expertise in standing and ground work. He is one of the few who can put the pieces back together and teach standing and groundwork techniques together as a comprehensive system, the way it was originally conceived by Jigoro Kano (founder of Judo), and as it was understood by the early Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu masters. His curriculum at Powersource integrates the best of Judo stand-​up with the best of BJJ ground-​work.
Andre is a hidden gem for BJJ practitioners who wish to learn more about standing technique and judo practitioners who wish to improve their ground technique.
