So disappointed! «Worst BBQ ever!», my wife said. We just moved to Florence and my wife is from Birmingham, she loves BBQ but hated this place. I’m beginning to think some Unilocalers don’t have taste buds haha. We looked in the area for the best BBQ and this place came up. We opted for a large pork plate and the rib snack, it came to $ 16 which we thought was ok as we were warned the portions were a good size. The portions were not big at all, we both thought it was too expensive for the amount of food given. The ribs were fairly tough and tasted of lighter fluid or something chemically. The pork came wrapped in a small piece of grease proof paper. We thought they had given us a small instead of a large. The woman serving us said there is ‘40lbs of meat, the same as a large sandwich’. I thought that can’t be right as 40 lbs is huge? We opened the food, both looked at each other and said is this it? The pork was just okay, my wife said it was literally the worst BBQ she has ever had. We swapped the slaw for beans as neither of us like it, they were in tiny portions and tasted both sweet and a little spicy. We will not be going back there especially when there are other places to try… Glad we tried it but no thanks!

I’ve been going to this place for over 20 years. Good BBQ and excellent slaw dogs. Service has always been the same, crap lol. Always have been like this since they have been open. I have had co-workers ask me if it’s a race thing and it is not. They are A-holes to just about everyone :). That being said know what you want to order before hand or tell them it will be a minute. Good bbq but I prefer Mr. Crites but it is too far to drive to Rogersville :(.

The service was awful. I get the impression these folks don’t much care if you come back or not. Barbecue was decent, it tasted like it had been sitting quite a while under a heat lamp or on a warmer. The slaw, potato salad and beans were all good for my taste. All that being said, I think I’ll pass Bunyans up next time I want to dine on swine.

I read an online article recently listing Bunyan’s as one of the best BBQ places in Florence so recently I was near ECM hospital and saw the building and thought I’d give it a try. I was not disappointed. First, their sauce is amazing. They have a hot and mild sauce(the mild is still spicy) and both are delicious. We had a rib plate and a family pack of pulled pork. My wife said the ribs may have been the best she ever had. The pulled pork was a little dry but after pouring a helping of sauce on it the flavor exploded into a fantastic BBQ sandwich. I’ll be making Bunyan’s a regular stop!

Slaw dogs are amazing! Worth a trip to Florence just to get them and I am nearly 40 minutes away.

I’ve been living in New Orleans for a few years now. Although there’s countless food options there, I haven’t found a good BBQ. This was my only request when returning to the Shoals. I need BBQ. REALBBQ. Other local pits are good and I’d take any of them over what passes for BBQ in the Big Easy, but Bunyan’s is by far the best. Large, mixed meat and extra slaw= happiness. Extra napkins will be required.

I’m not sure if fill my trunk with their sandwiches, but they’re good. Get the hot slaw BBQ with hot sauce. Maybe 2. And the hot dog is real tasty too. Great hospitality as well.

Feb 7th, on Saturday, Noël Lori-Elizabeth Teel, Dale Tony Vanoy and I was in Florence Alabama for a few hours. We walked around the time checking out the sites and we had lunch there and even visited the campus of UNA. I had read some reviews on Bunyan’s BBQ and about their fab SLAW… basically claiming their Slaw was dah’ Bomb… so we had to go right? we are right there!!! So, after several views of the google map on my android, I finally found the small BBQ joint in a run down part of town a few blocks back from the main drag, about 10 blocks to be exact. It was only a little to the right after you pull out of the WC Handy Birth Park and Museum. I don’t think I would have found it if it hadn’t been for myself stopping at the park first. I pulled into the parking lot. The place is small. Noël didn’t want anything but a sprite and Tony wanted one with chili onions and mustard. I told him that their slaw got tons of raves but he said NOSLAW. I will taste yours. So I went in to the counter. The lady wasn’t real friendly. Usually when you tell someone it is your first time, they are usually helpful… but not her. I guess she was tired or something. I told her, I need one with chili onions and mustard, a sprite and then one with everything. She said. WEONLYMAKEITONEWAY. I said do you put a sauce on it? She said NO our way ONLY… I said okay, I will take two please and a sprite. she directed me to the cooler behind me for the drink. she charged me $ 2.45 each hot dawg and a $ 1 for the sprite. When I got to the car I told Tony. just eat it!!! He said this is not what I ordered, I said I know. but they only make it their way. so try it… it won’t kill you. after I unwrapped mine. I asked why is the wiener so red??? we all laughed including Noël… but I have to admit THISISONEUGLYDAMNHOTDOG… but it was really good. The mustardy vinegary slaw was pretty good. The red wiener was hot. The slaw mixture was so wet and runny, it mad the steamed bun soggy and they had a toothpick in to hold it together. very messy for eating in a car. I would eat here again. I wouldn’t dream about them or seek them out like I do Gus’ from Birmingham, but I would eat them again.

Had to give Bunyan’s Bar-B-Que a try because of all the rave reviews I was reading on Unilocal.Well, IMO, it’s ALLABOUTTHESLAW, and nothing more. That slaw is a watery mess, but it is also extremely tasty. I wonder if they just sell the slaw itself? Honestly, it would be the only reason I’d go back. The meat in my pork sandwich was dry, but the slaw saved it. Hot dog looked pathetic when I unwrapped it, but again, «the slaw» saved it. It’s all about the slaw at Bunyan’s, plain & simple. Quick update — stopped in for lunch at Bunyan’s BBQ over the weekend of 12÷13÷14. Ordered a small pork platter, with sides of beans & cole slaw. Pork itself was tasty enough, although I felt the portion size was small for the price. Was not crazy about the sides, way too spicy for me, slaw had a mustard-like taste to it. That’s all, will post a pic.

Best hotdog I’ve had in a long time! The hot dog bun was squished and tasted cheap, but the hotdog itself with their sauce(not coleslaw) was amazing. A few tables inside and outside, but I would definitely get my food to-go next time.

Great food. The slaw is the best slaw I ever had in my life. As a matter of fact I eat the slaw on everything. Neighborhood classic.

Just wanted to start off by saying that hot dogs are not BBQ. I’ve eaten at Bunyan’s a few times(purchased by someone else), but have never been impressed by it. The Hot Slaw is really good, but that’s the only menu item that stands out to me. The pulled pork is OK, nothing special… I’ve eaten better BBQ at chain restaurants in other areas of the country. I think that why Bunyan’s is rated so high is that there isn’t any really good BBQ in the Shoals area, so Bunyan’s is probably the best to choose from. I’m a big BBQ fan, but I’ve never had a craving to go to Bunyan’s or any BBQ place in the Shoals area for that matter. I never plan on spending any of my personal money at any BBQ place in this area, but if someone else buys it, I’d probably eat it because I really miss BBQ living in this area.

Pulled pork was marginal and dry, but the sauce(thin sweet spicy vinegar) complimented it very well. Cold beans and warm slaw. I would be unlikely to return.

I believe this to be the best BBQ in the country. Can’t get enough of it. We have brought sealed bags of it to California and even tried duplicating the recipe. Fantastic consistency and flavor. The slaw is key and the hot sauce is addictive.

Amazing food! Pulled pork and hot slaw was the best sandwich I’ve ever had. Also got a hot dog and it was so good I will never be able to eat a regular hot dog again. On top of all that the people there are some of the friendliest people ever! I’ll be going back before I leave Alabama!

I’m from Tuscaloosa originally, so I’m not really used to this style of BBQ… but I’m a huge fan of Bunyan’s. I love the vibe. I love the size. I love the food. I love the people. I love can cokes. You can’t go wrong with Bunyan’s.
