American Tire & Auto Care – Flemington

I unfortunately have to update my glowing review of this business due to a recent service issue… I had asked them to «winterize» a classic car I own, as we just moved to NJ from the sunny south and we are too busy to do it ourselves. I had it clear that I wanted all fluids checked at drop off for the service. So 3 weeks later, the car has sat in our driveway after the service, we went to start it up to move it into a storage garage: doesn’t start, no big deal, with older cars we hopped out to take a look under the hood figuring it needed a jump. What we found was oil EVERYWHERE, the oil cap missing and three quarts low in the engine.
I IMMEDIATELY called American Tire to inform them of the situation, expecting them to justify their oversight of NOT replacing the oil cap…
What I received was THE RUN AROUND… «Well our records show you only paid for a radiator flush, we didn’t charge you for an oil change, did you try to jump it?»… Crickets… So if you read above, I made it extremely clear at the drop off that I wanted all fluids checked/​car looked over. And yes, you did check my oil, then proceeded to leave my oil cap off or replace it improperly causing it to blow off (if that’s even possible, as we found it sitting in a secure place on the engine)! No offer to bring the car down to take a look, no accountability, complete blow off…
The silver lining, the oil that sprayed all over under my hood due to their negligence, happened to ruin the starter, making the car unable to start, so I did not drive it low on oil and cease the engine… I hired a different mechanic to change out the oil covered starter, fill up the oil, and expect American Tire to be grateful to pay the bill for the starter vs having to foot the bill to rebuild my engine…

I’ve come here a couple of times now. I’ve only ever had tire work or an alignment done here. We knew my wife’s car needed a new tire and an alignment so I suggested driving a few extra miles down to this place. They seem to be relatively straight shooters (i.e. don’t recommend any services or products that you don’t truly need) and, most importantly, they seem to do pretty good work.
Their prices are also reasonable — a dealership quoted us at $ 150 for an alignment and I knew this place did it for much cheaper so we turned that down. The typical alignment is $ 85 and they even knocked $ 10 off because we were purchasing some tires, as well.
I’ll return — they’ve given me no reason not to. I feel comfortable here and I think that’s important when having any work done on your car. There are many places that give you an uneasy feeling and this is not one of those places.
