Service Plus Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

Service Plus charged me 2−3x the market rate for coil servicing. Shame on me for not calling around first to get other quotes, but as a recurring customer, I wasn’t expecting to be ripped off. When I left a message for a manager they never returned my call. I don’t recommend Service Plus and I certainly won’t bother calling them again.

We had a plumbing leak in our basement. After two different guys fiddled around the entire day they let us know that they were going to need help from a more senior guy who could come out later in the evening. Until then, no using water, period. They called later explaining that it would be even later than expected, possibly 10 or 11pm, which turned into later, which turned into three next morning. New guy came out and said that we needed a new grinder pump which, with installation, they estimated at $ 7782.

Called for a quote. Easy to schedule and were on time. Will keep them in mind for future HVAC needs.

Got an Angie’s list coupon for $ 40 service call, so I called them for a Drip-​leg installation on the manifold of my gas pipe. Translation: a 5−6inch piece of copper tubing that lets out extra pressure/​moisture from the gas line. I called them up, they were polite and punctual for the estimate. Their quote: $ 356 in addition to the $ 40 service call that I already paid. TOTAL: $ 396.
I immediately said no because that was insane and if they could recheck their estimate. They wouldn’t budge.
I called another plumbing company (also highly-​rated on Angie’s list). Their quote was $ 225 straight off the bat. I bargained with them and got it down to $ 200 cash, service call included. This OTHER company came out same day and finished the job in 45min.
Service plus = price plus. They were going to charge me double.

I am convinced that either the technicians that work for Service Plus are incompetent or they work solely on commission. They are now 3 instances where I either was overcharged or could have been if I did not seek a second opinion. The first time they took me. I simply accepted what they thought the problem was and paid for the repairs. The second and third time I was quoted repairs from $ 800 all the way up to $ 5 – 6,000 to replace an entire furnace. Both times I got a second opinion and my repair costs were $ 79 and $ 105 respectively from another company who pays their technicians hourly instead of on commission. I have requested to speak to the owner on both occasions and neither time got a call back. That says a lot about this company. Don’t ever use this company unless you like getting taken.

I’d used Service Plus on 3 separate occasions (1 Plumbing, 2 HVAC) and was very pleased the first three times, but they were minor service calls. This past experience was very poor workmanship and customer service. I tried contacting the original tech, the tech’s manager and the owner who I had met at a networking group and received no reply, nor resolution.
The situation was that I had used Service Plus for a diagnostic on my Furnace. I spent $ 500+ on a part to repair the furnace and $ 99 for their Service Plus service program which was good for 3 annual visits and meant to maintain our units. After the visit, the furnace was back to normal and working fine. Fast forward, I am selling my house and the buyer’s asked for a clean bill of health on the furnace. I called Service Plus since I had paid for the «Service Program» to come take a look and give me what the buyer’s were asking for. The young technician who I spoke to said that in order to give the unit a clean bill of health they would have to charge me over $ 1500 in parts plus labor since they said the unit «could fail any minute.» I was furious. The unit had been working for over a month without issue since their previous visit and now they were trying this Bait and Switch garbage. I asked to speak to a Manager and the tech said he would have him call me. No Follow Up. I emailed the owner, since I thought he might want to know the situation. I had met him at a networking group since I too own a business. No reply.
I called Mowery Heating and Cooling to come take a look and their veteran technician with two decades of experience looked over the unit, cleaned up some dust, tested it thoroughly and found no issue. $ 59 later for a Furnace Inspection, Cleaning and Tune-​Up, everything was deemed in good working condition. The unit has been working fine now for months.
Service Plus went wrong by pushing questionable sales tactics; whereas, Mowery focused on taking care of the customer and resolving the issue. The negative here was that Service Plus was my first call for all things Plumbing, Heating and Cooling for the last two years. Perhaps I just caught them on a bad day, but the lack of follow up and customer service was what sealed the deal. So, it’s disappointing that they didn’t place value on retaining a repeat customer.

My wife and I picked up a Groupon for an A/​C tune-​up and check. I’m glad that we did. The service was prompt and even though we had to reschedule a couple times, they were very accommodating, calling prior to arrival (extra important with a 5 month old at home). We were given a breakdown of our problems and a list of recommendations and quotes. The interactions were very professional and there was no pressure to buy anything extra. I would recommend them for others looking at evaluating their heating and/​or cooling!

I contacted Service Plus to work on my Bryant furnace — the blower motor had gone out and I needed to have it replaced. They were able to schedule me for the next morning and called when they were on the way to my house.
Installation was quick — he had to drive back to Castleton to get the part. I spent over $ 800 (had a tune and clean done as well) and with the time he spent between travelling and actually at the house (less than 1 hour) it just felt like the price was high. Always the case I suppose with HVAC repairs.
One minor complaint was the furnance was making a distinct whistling noise where the furnance filter was located after he replaced the blower. It got worse over the course of a couple of days — I added a strip of foam near there and it went away. This is just an attention to detail thing I would hope they would look for with the cost. He said he noticed it but didn’t make any attempt to correct. I didn’t call him out on it since I wasn’t there and wife didn’t think it was too bad.
I can’t say for certain I would call them back — nothing wrong with the service but I will probably shop around next time.

Devin was prompt and courteous. I had him over to do an inspection and furnace cleaning based on a groupon I purchased. He suggested some possible upgrades, but didn’t try to hassle me into buying anything which was appreciated.
Based on this experience I would contact them again for further service needs.
