Easy Like Sundae

Came here for the new sandwiches and was not let down. Mine was even made by the owner! Delicious sub with fresh ingredients. Way better than subwow or jimmy joes I love local places. Would come back for sure.

I was looking to get my yogurt fix. I prefer Orange Leaf because their yogurt tastes just like ice cream (sweet and creamy) and their banana flavor only has 40 calories.
Here the yogurt was definitely yogurt and non-​fat at that. I tasted no calories and no fat. This would be the perfect place for someone looking for traditional frozen yogurt!
Lots of space and perfect location in downtown Ferndale!

This is the fourth time I’ve called ahead asking if they had Key Lime yogurt, they say yes, I drive up there and it’s empty! I realize it’s a popular flavor, however I think the employees who just hang out behind the counter should check the machines every 20 min or so since they don’t do much else. I think I’m done with this place. It’s a bummer because you can’t get key lime yogurt anywhere

Love this place. Great value and lots of flavor combos to pick from. They have a little patio where you can eat and bring your dog. On Tuesdays they do double punch.

Gosh, I love froyo.
The froyo itself was pretty good, but I wasn’t blown away by their topping options. I would suggest some sour candy, but that’s my personal favorite. Like a previous Unilocaler mentioned, the tubes that hold some of the candy can make it hard to control how much comes out. Staff were friendly, I would go back.

This place is pretty good if you want a variety for frozen yogurt in the Ferndale area.
They even have waffle bowls to put your frozen yogurt in if you feeling for something crunchy!
The toppings offered are extensive and fun — it’s hard to choose sometimes. Do you want kit kat, snickers, cookie dough, strawberries, blueberries, cereal? The list goes on and on. You can keep it healthy, semi– healthy, or if you’re like me — you pile on so many random toppings you’re not sure if you feel guilty or excited!
The punch cards are cool, the more you go the more punches you get and finally reach the free yogurt :)
I just wish they had more fresh fruit. Whenever we go (late in the day or evening) the fruit is gone or mushed. That would not stop me from coming but just a bummer.

I’ve always had mostly positive experiences at Easy Like Sundae. But tonight my roommate and I were greeted by the most delightful and helpful employee named Raven. She was so sweet and fun to talk to, as well as informative about the flavors. Thanks, Raven– you rock!

Easy like Sundae is your average fro-​yo place. It has every topping you can think of and you are charged by weight. The great thing about ESL is that there is vegan ice cream in at least 2 flavors! They have a fair amount of seating both inside and outside. Its the perfect after dinner treat!

Eh. Not super impressed by ELS though I liked the beach chair/​beachy concept. We went here today because Treat Dreams was closed (some sort of power outage? Weird because no other Woodward places were out). Unilocal helped me find this place when I put in «ice cream» in the app, weirdly enough.
I got a combination of Fudge Brownie, (dairy-​free) Butter Pecan, and Mint Chip froyos. The mint was fine, fudge was meh, and butter pecan was gross tasting … it’s always a gamble when you do dairy-​free but this was worse than others I’ve tried at Sweet Earth and other froyo places.
I was impressed with their selection of toppings, they seemed to have more than other places I’ve been at.
Counter girl wasn’t unfriendly, per say, but wasn’t friendly either. I asked for a receipt and she wasn’t able to give me one, she had to do some cash register voodoo to get it to print out.
Overall, ELS is okay for froyo, but I prefer Sweet Earth (Bham + RO) or others in my area (Zoyo, Orange Leaf, etc) over it.

I had the Mocha flavored froyo. It was delicious. I will be back. The price was great too.

This place isn’t bad. Looks like a beach house inside and the froyo is pretty good. The service is pretty good too, although I was there once on a Saturday afternoon when it was near 90 degrees out and only one person was handling everything. Worth a try for sure.

I love frozen yogurt and I love this place! I always makes a point to come here for dessert after having dinner in downtown Ferndale.
The shop itself is really cute… it has a summery atmosphere that can cheer up the most SAD affected Michigander (or in my case, a transplant from California).
They always have a variety of flavors to choose from (and toppings!!!). They even have the Reese’s peanut butter and chocolate cereal which is a childhood favorite of mine and now I’m re-​addicted. :)

I have come here twice and both experiences have been positive. First of all, I know it is an froyo store but they brew local coffee, CHAZZANO! Love that.
Anyway, this store offers a promotion called weigh it wednesday. If you guess how much your froyo weighs then you get it for free!
I guessed the correct weight aka best day ever.
Either way, the froyo tasted awesome and they had a lot of toppings so ill definitely be back.

Much, much better than Bloomberry, all around. The girl that helped us was super friendly and gave as many samples as we wanted. The peach tart and original tart were really good, along with the boba balls. Yes, boba balls! Mango and pomegranate balls, along with tons of other topping options.

What’s not to like? Good froyo variety (including yummy vegan/​nondairy deliciousness), decent selection of toppings, and a clean atmosphere: Check, check, and check.
However, I will say that I am not a fan of having to ask for the sample cups from the counter-​person. Most froyo places that I have been to allow you to sample as many of the flavors as possible. Yes, I understand that this may allow people to be freeloaders, but when the sample cups are that small, I have a hard time believing that it’ll make a huge impact on the bottom line (I also tend to believe that most people are decent and won’t take advantage of this).
I also wonder about their drink selection — are people going to ELS to get products other than froyo?
However, if you find yourself a returning to ELS more often than not, a few tips:
— «Like» them on Facebook. They do a pretty good job of updating their page when there are new flavors, store happenings, and promotions. But, do this at your own risk.
— Use their loyalty punch cards (by the register). And don’t forget– Tuesdays are «two punch» days.

I love a good frozen yogurt place! This one is a-​create-​your-​own which is great so you can make as much or as little as you want. They weigh the sundae at the end and you pay by the ounce. They have about 10 flavors to choose from (including twisted flavors) and a large selection of toppings. In the dry topping section, there were maybe 20 options from candies to chocolates to cereal. They also had a nice selection of fresh fruit, fruit topping and things like cookie dough and brownie pieces. And you can feel good about it since it is yogurt! Lol They also have vegan frozen yogurt.

Maybe I’m a TCBY purist, but I will say I like that there is a frogurt option on Nine Mile. I have visited Easy Like Sundae three times and have had a moderate experience each time. I enjoy that that is a huge variety beyond chocolate and vanilla to caramel and coffee and fruit flavors. I get their concept too of providing a huge bowl that the average consumer would feel the need to fill to make it look full and then add toppings that flow too freely, all the while adding on ounces and dollars to the treat.
One should approach ELS thinking about how much yogurt they would normally want; envision a cone in a bowl. Also exercise caution with the free flowing toppings so you’re not over loaded with M&Ms, chocolate rocks, or whatever else might flow from a tube. If you have children in your party, help them! That is unless you want to pay like $ 20.00 for a huge, candy filled bowl of yogurt.
I like their random New England beach style décor and I really like that they have candy «eyes» to add to your sundae as a nice touch of nostalgia. Frogurt also can be a healthier option for a dessert, especially if you avoid the temptation of adding candies and sauces and stick to fresh fruit, nuts, etc.
If a punch card is your thing, you’re in luck because ELS offers a frequent visitor punch card where (I think?) your tenth visit is free.

A great addition to the 9 Mile strip, I liked ELS. The inside was clean and bright with beautiful wood floors that made the store pop that much more. I like the concept too and it seemed easy enough to figure out. I don’t remember what the per ounce charge was but it seemed reasonable and with all the yogurt flavor options and toppers it’s hard not to find something you’ll like. If you’re counting your pennies you can fill the one size container a little less full and use fewer toppings and if you decide to go all out there’s plenty of choices to load up on including fruit and granola.
The service was friendly and the patio out front with the Adirondack chairs is a nice place to people watch and eat.

So excited to have stumbled upon this place during the DIY fair. I have been waiting for a frozen yogurt place like this to come to Michigan for a long time. I have seen this concept in Tennessee and enjoyed the flexibility and creativity of making your own delicious sundae.
From the moment we walked in, staff was friendly and quick to assist us in trying some samples and telling us how it all works. I sampled the cheesecake flavored frozen yogurt… it was LOVE! I was even more overjoyed that I could make a twist flavor of the cheesecake and raspberry! Someone there is a genius! Some of the other favors included peanut butter, chocolate, key lime, and tart. I have tried the tart flavor at the similar place in Tennessee and to me it is like frozen sour cream… must be an acquired taste, but some people love it. Be sure to leave room in your cup for toppings and whipped cream. The cups are big, but they charge by the oz and it is a business, people!
After choosing the delicious raspberry cheesecake frozen yogurt, I made my way to the massive toppings bar. They have everything from cereal, Reese’s pieces, and cookie dough all the way to bacon… that’s right people, I said BACON! I was conservative and got some pretzel pieces on top of my frozen yogurt. Then they have an area with all different fruit toppings and sauces. I added marshmallow sauce and topped it all with a healthy portion of whipped cream!
After that it’s time to cash out. Because I had been to a similar place before, I knew not to go crazy and fill my whole cup because it wouldn’t be hard to rack up a $ 20 bill. With mine and my husbands creations it was about $ 10. Not bad in my opinion. Much healthier and fiscally responsible than Cold Stone… also much more delicious!
I can’t wait to brag to my family in Tennessee that we have our own fancy frozen yogurt place!
We will be back here within the month for sure!

Long and short: great concept with some rough edges. Self-​serve frozen yogurt in 10+ flavours and many toppings in a spacious shop earn 3 stars. Key lime, cake batter, and coconut are great. Two stars knocked off for no posted prices/​spendy, only size large and jumbo bowls, and faulty dispensers.
Whatever else Fabulous Ferndale may lack — an H&M or Zara, a branch of my bank, all you can eat sushi or a breakfast place open later than 3PM — the city boasts outstanding desserts. Gourmet micro-​creamery Treat Dreams, beloved Cupcake Station, and vegan friendly Pinwheel Bakery satisfy the sweet tooth at a variety of price points. Easy Like Sundae brings self-​dispensed frozen yogurt to Nine Mile just in time for 100’F summer weather.
The breezy, long shop can be found between Star of India and Natural Organics on 9 Mile just west of Woodward, the best corridor in the Detroit metro area for a weekend stroll. When it gets too hot, I foresee glamorous patrons lounging like Joan Collins on the wicker couches or exchanging scurrilous gossip over the bistro sets. Air conditioning and fro-​yo will keep the heat from cracking through their chilly composure.
Easy Like Sundae lives up to its name for getting a sundae. They discard the high school cafeteria-​style queueing up to a station for self-​service just the way a picky connoisseur wants it. No longer do you need to face teenage judgment for asking for a little more yogurt, a few less nuts, and berries spread out. No one’s going to question your sense for adding Nerds to sliced almonds and raspberries atop key lime yogurt. Hot damn, go wild. Make your sundae your personal experiment! Berries and dairy with oranges and lemons? Do it.
Ten flavours assure no weary choices between plain or chocolate, and I was glad to see the ten weren’t all shades of chocolate plus one. I settled on key lime, tart, and coconut; the beau went for key lime, cake batter, and strawberry. Other options included more berry and fruit flavours, but conspicuously absent is green tea. ELS, you need green tea for the health-​conscious hipster in us all.
Things get a bit crazy at the topping bar, which is the dessert equivalent of letting a gluten-​free/​vegan mom loose in Whole Foods bulk for the first time. Gravity drop dispensers unleash torrents of crushed Oreos, chopped nuts, Nerds, and chocolate chips. A traditional buffet-​like station has the dishes of berries, compotes and jams (raspberry, blackberry, cherry, and smashed something — is apple or apricot the victim?), shaved coconut and other fruits. Lastly hot fudge and caramel syrups in Costco-​sized pumps are ready to unleash a sticky tsunami upon unsuspecting fro-​yo and naughty siblings.
You can put together different sundae combinations in a snap, and the endless variety lends itself to all kinds of machiavellian scheming worthy of divine Ms. Collins. I may be on to something — a new social network of adopting sundae semaphore to broadcast messages to fellow diners.
But Easy Like Sundae has rough edges which need to be addressed before it reaches 4-​star status or, as the beau puts it, «more than a sometimes treat.»
1. No small size bowl.
The two sized offered are large and jumbo-​sized, a real problem when ESL prices by weight and for portion distortion. The smallest bowl probably holds two cups easy.
2. No visible pricing.
I couldn’t find any labels or menu board, though an employee informed me ELS prices by weight. I had no idea what I would be paying. The big bowls increase the chances of sticker shock. Customers do not like a surprise at the cash register, and I hope for their sake Easy Like Sundae addresses this with clearer labeling right away. It’s not like I can put back toppings or dump half the ice cream.
For two, our total came to $ 13(!). Consider two large cones at Treat Dreams runs about $ 7.
3. Gravity drop dispensers inappropriate for small toppings.
I like the dispensers for crumbled cookies and trail mix, but they aren’t meant for small candies or chocolate chips. The finer toppings need to be in dishes to avoid accidental overspill.

I wanted to sprinkle a few Nerds on my fro-​yo (they go bad with key lime, don’t bother) and the smallest twist of the dial dumped a quarter cup into my bowl. Turning the dial back to off spilled another several tablespoons that I did not want. I wasn’t about to dump half my Nerds into the trash… but they probably added $ 1-​$ 2 to my total. Meh.
The quality of the products are good, the toppings are fresh, and I like the self-​service alternative. Easy Like Sundae will be a sometimes treat, however, until they get some clearer prices posted and work out the dispenser issue.
