I have been a patient of Dr. Dougherty for several years now and have had a great experience. He and his staff are top notch and do a fantastic job. I have had a few crowns and no pain with any of them. They explain everything that is going on and what they are keeping their eyes on but don’t push procedures that aren’t needed at the time. I have and will continue to recommend them to friends.

Good customer service — but very dissatisfied with crown. Unfortunately, I do not have a good review about Dr. Dougherty. I really had my hopes up high and thought that I finally found my family dental office after 12 years overseas. But boy was I wrong. There is no question that the staff and Dr. Dougherty are very friendly. Dr. Dougherty also makes every effort to explain everything in detail and even points everything out on the x-​rays and photos. However, customer service is not everything. Especially when it comes to a dentist you would like to receive high quality dental service, especially when paying top dollar. I do have to say that I was very satisfied with the cleaning, which was performed by one of his staff members. And then I made the mistake of getting a crown. I have two crowns already, which I received in Germany years ago, so I have a comparison. First off, I paid over $ 2,000 for this crown, which is nearly twice as much as you would pay in Germany right now. Even that didn’t deter me and I kept hoping that with a high price I would receive high quality. However, that wasn’t the case. When the crown was put in an assistant made the assessment that it is too tight although an imprint of my tooth was taken carefully during the first session. I found that strange, because crowns usually fit like a glove. When Dr. Dougherty entered the room, he assessed it and agreed with his assistant. At that point I wanted to object, because we had agreed that the gaps between the original tooth and its molar neighbors would be narrowed by putting in the crown, but in the end I didn’t since I completely trusted Dr. Dougherty. The end result is that I have even larger gaps than before and I have to literally floss 2 – 3 times a day now. The gap is so big that one series of flossing doesn’t do it; I have to floss 3 – 5 times in the same gap in order to get the large amount of food out that gets caught in there now. When I told him about this problem in a follow-​up session that I had requested, all he could say was «You are killing me». I was in shock, literally. He started to polish the tooth and tried to fix it, but it didn’t help. The crown I received is also made of a very rough material. Like my other two crowns it is a molar, but my German crowns are smooth and feel like my real teeth when my tongue touches them. The crown I received from Dr. Dougherty feels like a temporary solution. All he had to say is «I hope when I see you next time you will be used to the feel of this rough material.» I don’t think I will ever get used to the rough material of this crown and I cannot believe that none of his other clients have noticed that since he claims he always uses the same lab for crowns. During the first session, when the tooth was prepared for the crown my gold inlay was removed. It was not given to me. When I noticed that in the parking lot, I returned immediately; there weren’t even five minutes between my departure and return. When I politely asked for it, I was told by Dr. Dougherty himself that «he hopes his assistant still has it». At that point I was pretty speechless — that was an impudence. I wonder how many other patients don’t receive their gold inlays. I guess nobody is so blunt like me to ask for them. I have to say they made me feel quite uncomfortable. The worst experience was all the pain I suffered after receiving the temporary tooth and then the crown. I was literally going through the roof for at least a week to ten days until it slowly got better. When I called in agony to talk to Dr. Dougherty I could only speak to Jean, the receptionist and administrative assistant, who gave me advice that was not applicable in my case. It was very nice of her to do that, but it is not credible dental advice. And last but not least, when the crown was put in an x-​ray was taken to see if it fits right. Apparently the bill was sent to my insurance and $ 25 of that bill weren’t paid. So, after all this and paying over $ 2,000, I got a bill of $ 25!!! I felt nickled and dimed for a very poor dental experience. By no means can I recommend Dr. Dougherty’s dental work.

I have been a patient of Dr. D’s for about seven years… I can’t believe it took me this long to write a review because Dr Dougherty is absolutely top notch. I am terrified of the dentist and was recommended to Dr. D by a colleague at work. She told me he is «extra gentle» and extremely understanding of patients with dentist-​related fears. This couldn’t be more true. Dr. Doughtery and his staff are kind, caring, personable, gentle and simply outstanding at their jobs. They make me feel at ease and genuinely cared about during each appointment. Dr. D’s work is flawless and he is always willing to take the extra time to explain exactly what is going to happen with each procedure. I’m so lucky to have found such a great dentist and dental staff… You should check it out… Your mouth will be thanking you!

I’ve been going to Dr. Dougherty for about 15 years now and have always gotten the best service possible! The staff is all incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend his office to younger families in the area, I am sure that you will be happy with your decision and stay at the office for good!

From the office staff to Dr. Dougherty himself, I wouldn’t go anywhere else! Very clean, neat, attractive office. Helpful staff, and Dr. Dougherty is very good at explaining procedures, as well as being thorough and gentle.

Dr. Dougherty and his staff provide top-​notch professional and friendly service that actually makes one want to go to the dentist. I have been seeing Dr. Dougherty since he was recommended to me by a work colleague since I arrived in Northern Virginia about 7 years ago, and I could not imagine going to another dentist. He is incredibly thorough and conscientious in his examinations, and he treats his patients with respect and care. Whenever one needs procedures, he provides complete explanations of why and how the procedure should be done. I have had extensive treatments given my past failures to take care of my teeth, and each time, I have been very satisfied — beyond satisfied — with the work that he and his staff have done. He also uses the most up-​to-​date technology, such as digital cameras to show one the conditions of one’s teeth and why one might need a filling, a crown, or other work. He clearly cares that his dental practice reflects his own positive character traits, because his staff is equally professional and extremely friendly and gregarious. I enjoy my visits thoroughly starting with my check-​in at the front desk to my dental hygienist (Jaclyn) to check out (Jean). If I could give his practice far more than five stars, I would do so in a heartbeat!

This was my first time here and was for a filling replacement that fell out. They were able to squeeze me in the next day!
Staff was professional but willing to strike up a conversation. Dr. Dougherty was an excellent dentist. He made everything he was doing very clear and did not push for more than was needed. He is very meticulous, like someone who has read the instruction manual for every piece of equipment and material he uses and actually follows it to the T. I noticed this because he takes his time at every stage, never rushing, unlike previous dentists I have gone to that appear to do things quickly so they can move on to the next patient.
I’ve had LOTS of expirience a with dentists (my fault), and Dr. Dougherty fit all of my expectations of a great dentist.
Prices are inline with expectations and they did give me a look at the price of everything they intended to do before they proceeded.

Four years later and the whole group is like family. Jaclyn, tooth tech extraordinaire, is an awesome professional and everyone is very genuine. I’ve never had to wait more than a few minutes to start an appointment — the sign of a truly well run organization that cares about its patients.

I have been a patient of Dr. Dougherty for over twenty years. He and his staff have always been efficient and professional. Plus, as the years have gone by, he seems to keep up to date with the latest technology.

I’ve been going to Dr. Dougherty since I was very young and have never looked back. It’s thanks to him that my teeth have been in such good condition for my now 22 years. As a kid, I never understood the old cliché that kids are supposed to be scared of dentists, as I was always quite happy to head on over to get my teeth checked. And not just because the office was willing to play «Space Jam» on the television during my appointment, though that of course helped, but because Dr. Dougherty also showed me the utmost respect and kindness as a patient. As others have already noted, his office clean and very well managed. It certainly helps that he is backed by the best team this side of The Avengers. Over my past few visits Jaclyn Hallenbeck has been great help as one of his dental hygienists. Super nice and personable, and just like Dr. Dougherty she remembers each of her patients personally. And during my last visit she gave me some great flossing tips! What’s not to like?
So overall I would highly recommend Dr. Dougherty. He and his team get the job done right.

After being treated like cattle at another local dental office, I was so excited to get an attentive, professional dentist in Dr. Dougherty. I am always seen at my appointment time, and the hygienist remembers me from visit to visit. I get great care with the latest technology. The office is clean, and parking is fairly easy if I have an early appointment. All the staff are friendly, professional, and helpful. When I had to get an expensive procedure, the staff gave me great information on financing options in a nonjudgmental way. I would highly recommend Dr. Dougherty to anyone in the metro DC area who is looking for top quality dental care!

I adore Dr. Dougherty. When I lost my insurance in November, his office accomodated me for my routine cleaning and understood the circumstances I was facing. They offer a cash discount of 10% if paid in full the same day of service. 10% may not seem like much, but anything helps at this point. His staff is kind and knowledgeable, and I love receving reminder emails and post cards to come in for a cleaning, especially since I forget all the time. I highly recommend his services.

Dr. Dougherty is the best dentist I have ever visited. The office is always exceptionally clean and my appointments have never started late (I’ve been seeing him for 2 – 3 years now). The staff are friendly, but you sense their priority is doing excellent work. They are knowledgeable and conscientious. Dr. Dougherty himself is thorough, he explains what is being done and why in plain language, he tells you what you absolutely need done and why, and he’ll offer preventative measures that he could do but aren’t absolutely necessary with no hard sell. Your bill breaks down exactly what is done and the cost, and he’ll provide a breakdown on any future work that you may need or consider. Dr. Dougherty delivers excellent care in a relaxed, friendly manner. There is reason he is regularly voted «Best Dentist» year after year in the Falls Church News-​Press. If you need a dentist or dental surgery, go see Dr. Dougherty.

I was referred to Dr. Dougherty by a friend of mine who has been very happy with him and the staff for quite a while. I liked the fact that he took a lot of time to explain the treatment options available to me and didn’t push any procedures. I also liked how he explained what he was doing every step of the way which not only kept me informed but also kept my mind off of the drill! But best of all, he was able to relieve the TMJ pain that I have been experiencing for about a year by providing me with a custom nightguard. I never would have believed such a simple fix could produce so much relief. I will be recommending Dr. D to all my friends and associates.

I called to schedule a cleaning. Showed up and I was told that I was going to have a 90 minutes appointment with the doctor and then a 60 minute cleaning. You would think that it’s something that I should have known when scheduling. Then, the receptionist asked if I had a different insurance that would be more beneficial for them! What? Who says that? At the end, they asked to pay fir cleaning and check up without giving me the detail of the bill or running it through the insurance!

I highly recommend Dr. Dougherty. As much as visiting the dentist is not fun, I look forward to my visits with Dr. Dougherty because the office is so well run, his staff is highly professional, and they are exceptionally friendly (even at my 7:30 am appointments). Dr. Dougherty is so kind and takes time to explain everything thoroughly and in a manner that is easily understood. He did a great job on my crown. Jaclyn is a wonderful hygienist who truly cares about her job and her patients. I switched from another office that was the opposite of this and it is so refreshing to have a dentist that I really feel comfortable with and trust completely.
