Record and Tape Exchange is a independently owned and operated Record Store, located in Fairfax, Virginia. The RTX has been in operation since 1976, and at our current location since 1988.
Presently, Record and Tape Exchange is the only independent record store in Fairfax County. RTX is known as a collector’s sanctuary and a cheapskates dream. Not only do they have the lowest prices in the DC metro area, they have more collectables than you could shake a stick at. Currently the dollar bin has over 4,000 records, and grows by the day. If rare and obscure music is your thing, this is your place; you never know what kind of gems you will find at the RTX.
History
Established in 1976.
The store was founded in 1976, in Annapolis, Maryland. It sold used and new records, 8-tracks, and eventually tapes, CD’s and DVD’s. The store found immense success and added another store in College Park, Maryland. By the end of the 1980’s RTX added a store in Fairfax, Virginia. Then, the independent record store plague (described above) hit, and the store fell on hard times. By the year 2000, both Maryland stores closed down and all of the stores resources were put into the Fairfax store. In 2004 the store was bought by Kevin Olsen, he had been an employee for years and wanted to bring RTX back to where it once was.
Currently, RTX is the only independently owned and operated record store in Fairfax. We restock our shelves and bins almost everyday, so you never know what you might here!
