COMMENTARY — I had my left knee replaced by Dr. Aram in November 2011. The surgery went fine and the new knee works very well. The doctor is a good surgeon. His office staff, especially his scheduling nurse, is also good. What I did not expect, and never thought to ask about before surgery, was the length of my legs after surgery. The leg with the knee replacement is now about ¾ of an inch to an inch longer than my other leg. I mentioned it at the time of both follow-up visits but the physician’s assistant did not acknowledge the problem or write it down in my file. I should have made a bigger deal of the problem at the time and now I wished I had. The leg length difference causes me lower back and hip pain. So, if you are considering knee or hip replacement be sure to bring up this issue before surgery with the doctor you select. One other thing to note, Dr. Aram uses«computer-guided robotic surgery,» which, at the time of my surgery, was not covered by insurance or reimbursed by my Health Flex Account. His office was upfront about this and told me it would be about $ 750.00 out of pocket. It was actually about $ 1,000.00. If this is out of your budget, look for another good doctor. From what I have read about computer-guided robotic surgery, it’s still experimental and does not seem to produce any benefits for the patient(at least according to health articles I have read in the New York Times). Update March 10, 2015 — Dr. Aram passed away in June 2014.

Dr Aram is a phenomenal doctor. He was the 4th orthopod I went to regarding meniscal tears and mild chondral wear on my knees that were very painful and making it hard for me to just walk. The first three knee docs told me they needed to do arthroscopy to see what was wrong, as they couldn’t trust the mri results nor the xrays. He is the first orthopod I’ve seen who did not want to slice and dice. He told me that the knees were not so bad and since I had good results with synvisc injections, why not keep doing those? He also advised me to take over the counter CosaminAsu and my debilitating pain went away almost immediately. He was very capable, read my mris in front of me, which the other docs did not(most likely could not) do and took as much time with me as I needed. I did not feel like cattle call at all. Plus, he goes on missions to help those less fortunate than himself. He has kept another friend of mine’s knee alive for years, with no surgery. He’s a medical magician. I highly recommend him.
