Jon Lori Salon

I’ve been going to Jon Lori for a few years and like my level three colorist, but have extreme reservations about it being a teaching salon. The assistants aren’t only inexperienced, most of them lack talent. Dana, who recently worked on me, failed to wash all of the dye out of my hair and burned my scalp with a hair dryer. Often, the colorists will double book and have their assistants apply your glaze. If they tell you anyone can do it, don’t believe them and ask that they make time to do it instead. You’re paying for a level 3 stylist’s expertise, not a teenager right out of beauty school who can’t hold a brush. As mentioned, I do think some of the colorists here are talented. Just make sure they’re the ones actually color your hair!

I’ve been going to Pam for a couple of years. It wasn’t easy finding a new stylist.
She is a true professional and she knows not only to cut and color but does an amazing job with adding extensions.
I highly recommend Pam!!! Jon Lori Salon is also a really great salon overall.

The salon is always clean, staff is friendly, and there isn’t a better place to get your hair dyed. The products they use are fantastic. They not only saved my hair after months of bleach, but they have continued to give me the best hair cuts and colors for over two years. Thanks Caitlyn!

After my regular stylist (who was amazing) decided to give up doing hair in pursuit of bigger and better things, I was having a really hard time finding a new hair salon that could measure up. I decided to try Jon Lori salon, making the very misinformed assumption that the «upscale» status and higher price tag would translate into superior quality. Unfortunately, as I learned, you don’t always get what you pay for.
I saw Varsha for a full foil highlight, which sounds like something basic enough that it should’t be too hard to pull off a satisfactory result. My hair is already blonde, with my natural color being a few levels darker. During our consultation, I explained what I wanted to achieve — to lighten up/​break up some of the brassiness in my hair and soften my roots so that it all blended to a nice soft ash blonde. I told her that my former stylist used to use high-​lift ash blond on my roots to achieve my perfect light blonde shade, but that after having my roots done somewhere else, my color was looking a bit brassy and two-​toned (hence my reason for wanting highlights). Varsha agreed that the highlights would help break up the color, and told me she would use a «glaze» afterwards so that it all blended together. I assumed she knew what she was doing, so I agreed. She also told me that for $ 20 she could add a special conditioning treatment to the bleach that bonded with it and helped prevent breakage. $ 20 sounded reasonable for preserving the integrity of my hair, so I agreed to that as well.
After my foils were rinsed out and my glaze was applied, washed, and rinsed, Varsha began to blow dry my hair. It was immediately obvious that the glaze did nothing to tone my color, and my roots still appeared dark and in stark contrast to rest of my hair (not very well blended at all). She asked me if I wanted her to apply a glaze directly to my roots to lift them a shade or two — which I thought was the point of the initial glaze. I asked her if applying high-​lift just to my roots in addition to the foils was an option, and she told me it would have been had she done that first, but now I «didn’t have enough root». (Thanks for telling me during our «consult»!). So, I agreed to the second glaze to soften my roots. (Mind you — no one explained to me that a «glaze» is just a semi-​permanent toner that doesn’t even last… or how much it would cost).
After the second glaze was done and my hair was blown out, I noticed that the top of my head (from my roots to my ears) seemed lighter than my ends, as if she didn’t pull the bleach through enough when she was doing my foils. But, I just shrugged it off thinking that at least my ends wouldn’t be as damaged. And then I got my $ 219 bill (Yikes! I didn’t even have a hair cut!).
When I went home later that afternoon, I pulled my hair back into a ponytail and to my horror, I noticed that the sides of my hair — and underneath — were streaked with this horrible blue/​gunmetal gray color. When my husband came home from work and I showed him, he couldn’t believe it. He told me it looked like I’d streaked my hair blue for Halloween. I literally felt sick to my stomach that I’d just spend $ 219 (plus a $ 20 tip) to have my hair so severely discolored. When Varsha was blow drying my hair, she should have seen this immediately and done something to correct it before I left the salon.
I went back to the salon that evening to see what could be done to correct the problem, and the girls that I spoke to were very nice, apologetic, and accommodating. I did make it clear that this result was absolutely unacceptable for a service that was so remarkably expensive, and I asked for a price break down. Apparently I was charged $ 30 instead of the $ 20 that I was quoted for the conditioning treatment that was added to the bleach, and a blow dry is only included with hair cuts and not for color-​services, so that was an additional $ 37 on top the of foils and glaze. (I think it’s kind of ridiculous that blowouts are not included with color services since you can’t tell whether or not your color came out properly when it’s wet. But, I digress). The girls did refund me $ 10 since I was misquoted on the prince of the conditioning treatment, but since my hair was streaked with blue highlights I think I should have gotten AT LEAST a 50% –if not full– refund. They did put me in the schedule with Kim for the following day to fix my color for no additional charge, which I did appreciate.
The next day Kim fixed my hair with a clarifier, some type of color correcting powder, and threw on another complimentary glaze. She was very nice, and really did do a fantastic job of correcting my color and effectively removing all of the blue in my hair. She definitely seemed to know her stuff, and appeared to be much more skilled, knowledgeable, and meticulous than the stylist I saw the previous day. Just goes to show that even in an «upscale» salon it’s hit or miss!

I’m a local to the area and have heard great things about the salon. Seeing the new client special, I had to give Jon Lori Salon a try. And I’m so happy I did! Everyone in the salon makes you feel welcome and comfortable. Stylists are knowledgeable and talented — providing suggestions on how to better your hair… without feeling like you are being hounded to buy product and additional services (huge pet peeve at salons)! I’ve returned again for color and blow out and once again really pleased with this place. I’ve referred two friends since, and will continue to frequent JL Salon!

Have been there 2 times and both times, I didnt love my experience. The stylist was fine but rushed through my color. Then when checking out, I was told no credit cards and then when I told them I wish someone was clear regarding their policy when I booked my appointment, they said «oh well. its the policy sorry».
The made an exception and took my credit card, but made me feel bad about it and told me that only this one time would they make an exception.
I think there are way better salons in the area to visit and was not impressed by this «stuffy» salon.

First got my hair blown out here and the girl did a great job even on my thick wavy hair. I was in the market for a new hairdresser so decided to get my hair cut there next time. The girl used thinning shears ALL over my hair– had I known the damage this would have caused I would have stopped her immediately!!! Ever since that haircut which was over a year ago my hair has been horrible from the million layers put in by the thinning shears. I had hairs poking out in every direction– needless to say I wore my hair up mostly.
When I went to a different salon not only could they see my problem, but they also told me one side of my hair was longer than the other– great! Took about a year to get my hair back to normal and now I know to stay very far from thinning shears.
It’s too bad– the salon seems very professional and the blow out was nice, but $ 70– something to get my hair hacked? No thanks.

I’ve been to many high end salons in NYC and when I moved down to Middletown I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to find a good colorist/​stylist. Well, I founds a gem, Stephanie. My hair color never looked so amazing– she understood everything I was looking for in a natural color/​highlights.
The staff at JonLori is amazing, friendly accommodating. You don’t feel like your out of place when you walk in the door.
I recently moved to FL and Stephanie was sweet enough to give me formula so I that I can have the same results.

Jamie does a good job, but it’s always VERY hard to get an appointment. Shampoo girl told me they only give her a limited schedule. I just called for an appointment and they said nothing available for three weeks. So, if you decide to go, better book while your hair is still short.

i’ve been to a colorist/​stylist twice, thinking that maybe the second time around things would be more to my liking here. although it’s an OK salon and the people are nice enough, my stylist didn’t really listen to what i wanted. i asked for longish layers to acheive volume and bounce, as people my age don’t look good with helmut-​head. i received a very flat ‘do’ that i had to wash as soon as i entered my home. i made it crystal clear that i was not a fan of lots of products… in fact, i stated that since my hair is fine, the products weigh it down and i don’t get the volume (stated earlier) that i like… hey, i’m a jersey girl, we hate droopy long hair. my stylist proceeded to use FOUR products on my hair, i still have no idea why there were needed as the result was far from stellar… in fact, she actually tried to sell me all four products, very high end. in addition, i asked for a trim and i got about ¹⁄₁₆^th of an inch cut from my length, so it made literally no difference. i hate to bid this place adieu, but maybe i’ll try someone else, maybe not. hope your experience is better. should get two and a half stars.

I used a Unilocal deal to get my hair colored by Karen. She is phenomenal. Not only did she do a great job on my coloring and explain every step of the process, but when I came back because the color washed out kinda bright for my taste, she toned it down for free. The staff is very friendly and they will give you water, coffee, snacks while you wait, and give you magazines to read if you forgot to pick one up. The only con is that it’s a little pricey but you get what you pay for in hair care, customer service, and atmosphere.

Mediocre salon for the area. Karen is wonderful but beware of the other stylists, very hit-​or-​miss.

I love this salon and it will be the first one that I will return to and be faithful to. Stephanie had the task of taking on my ridiculous requests and after a lengthy consultation and another half a day of hard work I looked fabulous. Not only was she awesome, but the entire staff was so friendly and accommodating, always offered me water, tea, coffee, bagels, etc., and they didn’t try shoving overpriced products down my throat when I left like every other salon I’ve been to. I’m actually going to call tomorrow to schedule my next appointment!

I love my haircut by Courtney! Also loved how friendly the whole staff was, the receptionist, the lady who washed my hair and Courtney my hairdresser all very friendly.
The reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars: my appt was at 1:00 and I did not get taken until 1:25, this is a huge pet peeve of mine. I feel that if you can be there on time and not waste their time, they should give you the same courtesy and not waste yours, or at the very least call you and let you know they are running late so you don’t rush there to be on time only to wait 25 mins. Apparently my hair stylist was over– booked and that was why so perhaps something they should think about before people get fed up and don’t come back to a great salon for this reason.

I went to Jon Lori because a) I live in the neighborhood and wanted to try it out, and b) because my haircut was a circus and I needed someone to straighten it out. Pam cut my hair, and she did a great job. The salon itself is very bright and the people are friendly. It had a relaxed, laid back feeling, and I didn’t feel out of place wearing a sweatshirt and no makeup, like in other salons I’d been to. I am happy with my haircut, and I will be going back!

Had my hair done by Jillian. She did the Ombré Hair technique. She did an amazing job. Very Pleasant salon, relaxing and very knowledgeable! Can’t wait to go back!

Been here twice — once for highlights/​wash/​trim/​style and once for a touchup/​wash/​blowout. This place comes down to service service service — as good as it gets. Nice girls, refreshments, great products — what more can you want? Expect to drop a ton of $$$$ for your services though. But hey, it’s Fair Haven, not Bayville!

Jamie gives amazing haircuts and dye jobs. Definitely a NYC-​caliber haircut for only $ 50.

I let my hair go… I know. When I was a corporate girl, nails done every two weeks and the hair cut every six.
Things happen, you get laid off and the budget starts to matter. You take a job sailing (Did I wash my hair that month?) and then open your own small business, the last thing you think about is YOU.
I found Jon Lori on Craigslist. Yep, you read right. The folks in NJ are so wary of the CL. shop around for deals. Do your research and don’t be naïve.
I made my appt on a Thursday and was able to get in the following Tuesday. I felt like I walked into the salon like a bat out of hell (with one messy mop). I had meetings in the city all morning and was running a tad late. Gave them a ring regarding my tardiness, the receptionist, also a pleasure, said «no problem, Jilly, see you in a bit!» Being addressed by someone who uses your name in the conversation you really don’t know is an sincere treat these days!
My stylist Stephanie was awesome! I guess I had that typical pre-​conceived notion that the salon (for its location) was going to be nose up. Never once did it feel this way. Steph was so down to earth and extremely knowledgeable. I let her make the calls which weren’t major by any means. A color glaze and a much needed hair cut later, I felt like the Beck girl when I left. And my hair, 3 weeks later is still thanking Stephanie. I stopped using junking products for which she advised and backed away from washing every day.
So, to conclude, 5 stars to Steph, her family (mom & dad are Jon and Lori) and the staff for making a drowned rat feel like a million bucks!
