Terrible service. Walked in with a party of 6 and they had 5 tables in the middle of the restaurant that was open. We went to sit down and was rudely told this section is closed even though other people were eating in the same section. So we walked out and went to another restaurant. This was the first and only time I will ever try to eat there.

My son and I had dinner here the other night. Saturday night around 6 pm. It was packed! Had to wait for a table about 5 mins, not bad at all. Service was fast and courteous and accurate. We split the jalapeño poppers(highly recommend), and then both got the fried chicken sandwich with fries. Chicken was good, just a little too greasy for me. Fries were perfection! We also took dessert home, I had cheesecake and he had hot fudge sundae. We will definitely go back and support local restaurants like this one!

Wonderful homestyle food! I won’t miss it when I come back to Indiana. I’ve never been disappointed.

The appearance of this place inside & out is very dated however the food & service made up for what it was lacking. the cod fish platter was really good, the chicken tenders were HUGE& yummy. Will be back… think I may order the fish sandwich instead of the platter though. Reasonable prices. Worth a try.

I couldn’t bring myself to eat the brain sandwich, it’s the idea mostly. The fried chicken is really good and the potato salad. It’s just good home style food. The fact that it’s a mom-and-pop place and not a chain just adds to the appeal.

Came here with a coworker a few years ago. They aren’t around anymore but the brain sandwich in my gut sure is. Seriously though… good food, good drinks, and brains. Try it out once if you’re brave enough.

Grabbed a quick lunch there at a coworkers urging. Said something about a good fish sandwich. Place had a very old school neighborhood dive feel. Salad bar straight out of 1982 going on, including big block of cheddar. FYI, no one likes sweaty cheese! Got the fish sandwich, order of fries with ghetto cheese sauce on the side(my weakness). The sandwich came on toasted rye bread, which in this guy’s eyes is awesome. Two good sized pieces of delicately fried fish. The fried chicken breast sandwich was huge as my coworkers both went that route. Biggest problem was the menu made it look like adding fries to a sandwich was $ 1 or so, but in actuality it was only if you ordered the burger. Sorry, fries =$ 2.70. Service was good, but I left there paying $ 14 for fish on rye, fries, side of cheese and a tea. Not a real bargain for the lunch crowd but the service was good as was the food. Maybe next time I’ll get the brain sandwich and carve off a chunk of cheddar!

Well I gotta say it truly is the best fried chicken in the world. Plus I loved the huge frosty fish bowls of beer. You can eat out front when its warmer weather. I liked eating in the old timey bar myself. People are nice too.

This is my 2nd visit. Very quiet this Tues evening. Kind of an old musty smell. But, don’t let that stop you from coming in. Staff are friendly and all the food is homemade. Seven domestic beers on tap. The 5 stars is for the great food and friendly staff

An Evansville standard. Come here if you want cold beer, good food, and to know what Evansville must have felt like in the 80’s(sans HD TVs). I am not saying this as an insult but that it was a cool experience and meal I had w/my buddy. I got the beef tenderloin sandwich and it was great. The waitress was super friendly and attentive and the beer served in iced fishbowls was of course cold. We ate at the bar area and it didn’t get the most sunlight, but that added to the allure. It has won some awards for its brain sandwich, but I passed on that. A local joint that this non local enjoyed.

Stopped in on Saturday afternoon, only a few tables in the place. You know I had to have the brain sandwich, which was excellent, by the way. I was a bit disappointed in the roll, but the brain itself was well battered and tasty. It’s pretty big, and I got away without ordering the fries to go with it. My wife had the fried chicken, with a side of beans. She really liked the beans, and said the chicken was good, very moist, but that the crust lacked a little something(maybe spices in the flour for it?). We both had iced tea, which was really good. With the tip, out the door for $ 25. Service was friendly, and excellent. Andrew did a fine job!

I like their food but their service is generally lackluster. Also, they never let you order off the kid’s menu(even if you offer to pay extra) so be prepared to eat A LOT if you come here.

Ate here today for the first time while visiting a friend in Evansville. This is a VERY unique place, built as a stagecoach stop in 1839 — dripping with atmosphere and ambience. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was great, very attentive, our waitress kept our drinks refilled and table bussed even though they had a busy lunch crowd. Very nice salad bar, it wasn’t huge but was well stocked and fresh with good selections. I had the broiled fish sandwich and my husband had the beef Manhattan, our friend had one of the daily lunch specials the salmon patty. These arrived promptly, but had to say we were a little disappointed in the food. It was pretty bland. Nothing wrong with it — just sort of average. Still all in all it was a great lunch and we’ll be back. I might be tempted into trying their specialy the brain sandwich…

Love the Hilltop. Great Family atmosphere and Home Style cooking. Old school place where owner will come up and see how you enjoyed everything. Love their fried chicken!

Pros: 1. Overall the food is pretty good, but its hit and miss. 2. Their dark meat chicken is really good 3. Friendly servers and you can usually see an owner there greeting and seating people Cons: 1. The wait staff is friendly, but the service is usually bad because the servers are forced to handle too many tables at once. Sometimes you might not see your server for a while. Sometimes they forget things because they are doing too many things at once. 2. There is no place to sit while you’re waiting for a table. On busy nights people are standing by the salad bar and the table next to the door because there is no place to wait. In the summer its not so bad because there is a patio, but in the winter and during bad weather its unacceptable. 3. I like places that have a salad bar, but this one is pretty small. Some ham or turkey would be a nice addition. The salad bar comes with a lot of the steak entrees, but its a pretty hefty cost adder for the other entrees considering how small the selection on the salad bar is. Also, its not sanitary for each customer in line to cut the communal cheese block. I’ve seen people holding it down with their bare hands. This is not safe. Put some pre-cut blocks of cheese or don’t serve it at all. 4. Their gravel parking lot needs to be paved with parking lines in order to make enough space for their customers on busy nights. 5. The bathrooms are too small. The men’s bathroom on the family dining side doesn’t even have a stall door. Who wants to take a dump in front of stranger? The bathroom on the bar side has tons of clutter in the entry way. Not sure if its always like that though. Bottom Line: This place is as inconsistent as they come. Sometimes you’ll get a great meal and sometimes the food and service is lousy. I know the place is older than dirt, but that’s no excuse for not having bathrooms, service, and a parking lot that is up to par.

Ah the West Side Country Club. I just wish I could go there more often. This is one of the corner stones of Evansville. My favorite thing there is either the Hilltopper Burger or a Fish Sandwich(especially during Lent). If you haven’t been to the Hilltop then you are missing out on the best tavern food in Evansville.(Don’t worry, it has a separate family room)

I went there once and had a hair in my fries. I told the waitress and she came back with cold hard as a rock fries. And I ended up being charged full price.
