Thoroughly depressing. Maybe they have some hidden treasures, but the worn down looking shop zapped all the energy for being creative right out of me. It seemed like they once had a huge stock and over time what has been purchased has not been replenished, so I found plenty of short or long zippers, but few in-​between. I’ll be working from my scrap pile instead of trekking here again.

A tailor and crafters dream! Vogue has the largest selection of fabrics and notions I have ever seen! Store front’s interior is dated but makes up for it by the helpful staff and variety of goods offered. Their hours vary so check the website.

Great selection, severely lacking in customer service. Antiquated checkout system. You have to pay for notions and material separately. There are 3 different spaces with material so good luck if you are buying more than one item.

You want some great material go here. Very reasonable and new crafts of material available. This the spot.

I received my order online. It is special occasion fabric and I paid a lot for it. It is covered in large ink smears. I cannot believe someone did not see this when they were packaging the fabric. Fortunately I ordered more than what I needed and the dress is for a one year old. It is her first birthday and I wanted the dress to be special. I can cut around the area and make it work. If it was a larger dress I would not be able to do this. I do not have time to return it and get something else, so I will use what I have. However I will not order again. I simply cannot believe these markings were not seen. I feel it was carelessness for someone not to have seen this. Half a yard in the center of the fabric on the fold is unusable. There is ink scattered throughout so I have to carefully place my pattern pieces to avoid the spots. Very annoying.

Amazing for fabric, customer service not so much. The selection is insane! There are so many fabrics to choose from and they are well sorted by type and such so it makes things easier to find. A friend and I went for fabric for some home projects: pillows, curtains, chair covers. We definitely found some amazing stuff! The reason I would give 2 stars is because the customer service was terrible! Everyone was really flat out rude! One lady actually told me to be quiet and put her had in my face. I will only go back if I can’t find what I want at another store.

This place is enormous! There is a huge selection of fabric, plus trimmings, sewing accessories, ribbons, buttons, all the usual suspects in a fabric store. Moreover, they have excellent sewing machine and upholstery departments. The service isn’t stellar — in particular, many of the women at the fabric stations are extremely laid-​back and not in any kind of rush, and it can be awkward figuring out where to ‘queue’ when they’re busy. Having said that, I’ve always found the guys on the floor to be really polite and helpful, and the range/​prices make this a place well worth a visit. My main criticism is that the fabric selection is kind of … dorky? It would probably take more digging than I’ve done to find anything ‘trendy’ (I tend to like the scandinavian design vibe, this place is more a country kitchen or superhero pajamas place).

I did not have the best experience here, but I think it was my own fault, and I can see the potential in this great place. I went on a Sunday morning, with no project in mind, and I had a time limit and an event to get to. Both of these things worked against me.
I would not come here again without a specific project or a specific need in mind. This place is huge! At least five huge rooms of different kinds of fabrics, buttons, accessories, etc– everything you could possibly need or want. Which means if you’re just wandering aimlessly, you’re probably going to get overwhelmed.
Even on a Sunday morning the place was hopping. One thing I didn’t like was that the employees were less than helpful. The store is laid out in a weird way as well, which makes it difficult to find things.
I will be back, as I’m sure they will have everything that I could possibly need.

Huge variety of fabrics, but service is slow and totally lackadaisical. Not sure how people can work there and behave like that. The best thing about this place is their size and variety of fabrics. However the lack of efficiency and the general atmosphere of the 1940’s or earlier is a bit worrisome.

While this place is huge and does have a decent selection, the pros end there. You cannot remove bolts from one room to compare to another so you must first have your fabric cut and hope you find a match. The customer service is bland to say the least. The worst part is it’s pretty dirty. I think since they have so much inventory, the turnover isn’t as much as it would be a Joanne’s so the fabric is sometimes old and stained. For instance I was looking for white eyelet fabric and lace trim. It was almost all yellowed from age. Small trim selection as well I felt. In addition, the area surrounding the store is to be desired. I’d skip it unless you are really looking for a rare find. I left without buying anything and instead found the perfect fabric online at Etsy and the trim at Joanne. Waste of time.

Ok, customer service is kind of ehh, but come on! Look around! This place is hands down the best for getting fabric. If I knew it existed earlier, I would have never set foot in a JoAnn’s. This place is 5 times the size of JoAnn’s.
My only tip is that you should check out the shelves and baskets of trimmings before you go and have new ones cut. You might find what you were looking for for a lot cheaper. I got 8 yards of lace trim for $ 4 and ended up finding a similar style in the bin at 10 yards for $ 3.

My period Duncan Phyfe dining room table came with 6 chairs.
They were covered in beige, stained fabric. The beige, stained fabric had been covered with clear vinyl. This would be perfect IF:
a)I was blind
b)I lost my eyes in a tragic accident, while travelling in the UK
c)The chairs were hidden in a back room
None of the above are true. And actually my eyes are quite breath taking.
I decided I wanted to recover them with really high quality mens’ suiting material. Vogue fabrics seemed to be the place to go, for the broadest selection. Vogue fabrics is also not terribly far away from my flat.
Upon my arrival, I was wowed by the selection they seemed to offer. I explored the warehouse style building for the mens suiting material. I had to find it on my own, as the people who worked there had better things to do, then help the customers.
Then I found the fabric. A beautiful chocolate colour with a periwinkle plaid check through it. Yes, indeed. This would look gorgeous on my dining room chairs. I figured if it was strong enough to make a suit out of, it would be strong enough to cover my vintage chairs.
I extracted the roll of fabric from the wall, and worked my way over to a cutting desk. While the wait wasn’t bad, apparently new people in the store are completely ignored, in hopes that when we return we will have forgotten the painfully awkward silence.
Fortunately, the woman ahead of me must have known the associate — as they talked for about 10 minutes, AFTER her fabric was cut. I am patient though.
My turn! The woman cut the exact yardage I asked for, and pinned a tiny little receipt on my fabric so I could be taken care of at the cash wrap.
I decided I also wanted to find out about their sewing machines. After 12 minutes of being left alone in the sewing machine area, I just decided to ring out my purchase.
For what I bought, and how much I bought — I was thrilled with the price.
I was feeling ambitious that day, and decided to cover my chairs that afternoon. They look amazing.
If you want great fabric choice, and good quality material — check out Vogue Fabrics in Evanston. If you want great customer service, and friendly sales staff — well, maybe you should look a little bit longer.
I will go back, but it will be an in and out experience.

If there’s a larger fabric store larger than this one, I haven’t seen it. The selection is vast, in the way that can only be achieved by being in business forever. The side benefit is that means the remnant department is also vast. In fact, the remnant area by itself is bigger than many fabric stores. And if you’re looking for fabric for projects (I wanted some interesting pieces to silkscreen onto) the half price remnant selection in the extreme back corner is huge.

however, like most of these reviews, the customer service was possibly the worst I have ever experienced. they were rude and acted like doing their job and helping customers was below them. it was very frustrating. I would suggest going to another fabric location if you can

This is the Mecca of fabric stores!!!
The only negative is that it’s a hit or miss with the employees. Some of them are rude and some are nice. That’s why the loss of the star.
They didn’t have a good selection of appliqués which is what we went in for.
Can’t wait to go back to choose fabric for a dress I’m going to have made!

They have a massive selection and some incredibly knowledgeable staff. There are also some less knowledgeable staff, though, which makes the experience hit or miss. The prices are not as good as the big box competitors, so if you’re looking for something basic, skip this joint. If you have a specialty project or want some lux fabric, this is a great place to be. Parking is metered on the street, which is always a problem for me because I tend to get lost in fabric stores and spend WAY more time there than planned. Chug an extra quarter in the meter if you go, because as I said, the selection is huge. You’ll need the extra time!

Large, pretty well-​organized, and the lady who helped me was really friendly, although I’m pretty sure she thought I was super dumb — I literally Googled this place and went in with only the vaguest idea what I wanted and no experience in fabric shops.
There are different sections of the store, and you pay for what you want in each section separately, which I was a little confused about. They had exactly what I needed, though, and I thought it was fairly affordable.

Customer service needs work. This review is for their online store, and the customer service I received over the phone.
I placed an order last week online, they have a great selection and placing the order was easy. I never received an email confirmation, but didn’t think much of it (which was safe to do since they did receive my order). The next day I received a call saying that one of the swatch cards I ordered was out of stock but that I could replace them with different ones if I wanted to. I did want to, so she put the order on hold and I spent a chunk of time looking for new swatches. The next day I called to edit the order. The person I spoke with said that they had found my original item and shipped it the previous day, but never bothered to call me. A bit annoying since I wasted time, but all is good.
A couple of days later I receive the order, and it’s the wrong order. Entirely. With a different customer’s name and items. I call, they say they have been looking for the order and are happy to have found it. They say they’ll email me a label to send back the order (which I never received), and that they’ll ship my order to me right away. Things get messed up sometimes, it happens, so I’m cool with it. The problem is that I have an appointment with a dressmaker scheduled and these swatches are essential to that meeting, and I still don’t have them in hand. The agent said that she would ship them out that night and they would arrive in time for my appointment.
It’s now two days later, the package has still not arrived and my appointment is tomorrow morning. I call to inquire about the whereabouts of my package, and they tell me it’s in transit and there is nothing they can do. At this point I’m pretty upset. I’ve tried to be patient, because screw-​ups happen, but I feel kind of ignored. I ask if they could overnight a new package for me, and she says no. OK, so what *can* you do for me? I want to do more business with them but if this is how they treat customers (very reasonable, very patient ones), it leaves a really bad impression. She finally says, «We could just give you the swatches, I guess. Would that make you happy». Happy, not really. But an effort, any effort, to accommodate a customer after screwing up is appreciated, yes.
I’m open to it being a positive experience from here on, and I’m looking forward to receiving the swatches. This experience alone wouldn’t prevent me from placing an order, but that has more to do with how few options there are in this area of the market. I’ll revise my review if my future experience changes my impressions.

Large, well organized fabric store with a wide selection of many fabrics. This was my first foray into a «real» fabric store past Joann’s and Hobby Lobby. Every time I go, I am always reminded of what a sewing n00b I am, but I’m also inspired to make something interesting. This was the first place where I strayed from the cutesy cotton print-​type fabric purchases and thought «aw hell, why not buy this salmon crêpe» and it turned out to be an awesome purchase.
Service is okay — I think the people are nice enough at the cutting counter, but you do need to be pretty direct when you want service elsewhere. Once an employee actually laughed at me for asking him a question, but to be fair it was a pretty dumb sewing question. I don’t go here much anymore now that I don’t live in Evanston but if I’m in the area I enjoy dropping in.

I started taking classes at Vogue a few months ago and I have fallen in love with the crazy culture of the store. First, my instructor Veronica is amazing. She is definitely an expert sewer, but is also a people person. She puts everyone in the room at ease and makes us relax when our sleeve goes in backward or we do some other stupid thing. Her sense of humor and kindness really help as you are learning a new skill. Most importantly, I feel well trained in the craft of making a garment. Veronica is very specific about learning the correct procedures in sewing and following a pattern. She also helps you learn how to adjust your pattern to fit your unique shape.
When I first started going to Vogue I was surprised by the customer service. Everyone there knows a lot, but they are very low key. It reminds me a little of Italy, where you need to tell a salesperson exactly what you need. Some might be turned off, but I actually prefer it to the minimum wage earners at big box retailers who might be ‘helpful’, but aren’t actually ‘knowledgeable’.
Vogue has several rooms where the fabrics are separated by blend, so it’s very easy to find exactly what you need. I’m also a big fan of the notions department where you can find any sewing notion you could ever imagine!
