Cal Courts

I have been attending calcourts for 27 years, mostly i go there because they are one of the only gyms that have a punching bag and a speed bag in eureka .The gym itself is the filthiest place i have ever entered. Yesterday i was on the elliptical when suddenly i get the strong odor of feces, as my arms are going back and fourth on the machine so i followed the odor to my right hand. mind you i had just came out of the shower, i was so repulsed i almost threw up right there so i washed my hands and the machine to no avail. This den of filth has a particular spirit about it, there are a number of men that you never see them sweating or working out ever, what they do is they hover, they hover around waiting for a unsuspecting female to come in and they conveniently position themselves in order to put that female in a compromising position. When i said something to one of them, he complained to management about it, and said i was a angry person because i wouldn’t let him follow us around upstairs and down, like they do. I am calling on any female that has experienced this or anything similar in they gym, the bathroom, ect. i call on you to please send your review and experience about this place because i intend to sue and i can use all the support i can get.
In the bathroom, i have experience blatant sexual harassment, again these creeps position themselves where when you come out the the open public showers, they are below you in the Jacuzzi behind you, the average normal person looks away, these creeps smile and stare at you package to me that is sexual harassment. One day i was in there crappy sauna when this Mexican man was playing with his phone, i didn’t understand a lot about cellphones at that time, when i got home and found out why a light would be shining out of the back of his phone i realized he was recording me naked in the sauna! Not long after that, a young man about 17 years old walked into the sauna where i was again, he seemed upset, then he said to me that a guy in the steam room though he couldn’t see clearly he could hear the man carrying on and moaning so he came and told me, i walked in the steam room, open the door and told him to cut the crap out! I can go on and on about the conditions and situation that take place at Calcourts under the owners nose with me and others constantly reporting to agatha. all she does is grin at the sexual harassment and filth and says NO BIG DEAL! So you women have been warned. More incredible than the poor conditions of the equipment, the unsanitary conditions, and i have observed several people who are very comfortable there yet you can smell them from 6ft away and the inside of his shorts from the crotch are deteriorating like rotting. I reported it because they allegedly have a hygiene standard, which is a joke of course, but of all the filth the extreme poor conditions the lingering men not to work out but as a way of checking out the ass and having a fantasy show for free, the worst of all of this is the owner Agathas attitude. I told her one day in person that she had a large collection of creeps and wackos that she has never had to deal with but we do! she didn’t get that, it went in one ear and out the other. I am going to try my hardest to get that place shut down.

Thanks for being reasonably priced good gym. I was a member years ago and I was happy then and I’ll be happy now. Trainers and staff seem positive and upbeat, not just bored college students. Can’t wait to get started again!

The owner has an answer ready for every complaint, but I do not see an attempt to change or better any conditions. Buh Bye!

Awful! I have had three horrible experiences at this club. Probably because it is located in the center of the worst part of Eureka.
1. Was followed around by a creepy guy who always stood behind me while exercising. When confronted he denied yet refused to move from behind me. I told the front desk staff and they said I could complete a customer complaint card. (Sorry didn’t think that was adequate attention to an important issue).
2. Early morning workouts are made very uncomfortable by one gentleman in the cardio machine section. He will change the (only) television no matter if you are watching it to FOX news. Then he will proceed in interrupt member workouts by asking them highly contentious questions regarding politics. Can I just work-​out in peace, no matter what political beliefs I have?
3. I noticed that my monthly dues stopped coming out of my account. I asked the front-​desk if my account had been paid, they said yes. I asked again a couple of months later, and same thing account showed the dues were paid. I even had them check the card number to make sure they were taking it out of the right account. MONTHS later, they take out all dues at once that completely drained my account.
Anyways don’t go here unless you want to be harassed. Too expensive anyway for the quality of equipment.

This gym overall is fine, but it is not a good looking place nor is it inspiring. Its like a big dungeon, the locker rooms are very crowded and tight, the lockers are old, the benchs are plastic. The whole place is old. I tried hopping in the steam room only to find it has been broken for weeks, not hot at all. Only 4 showers out in the open and 1 of them worked very poorly. The cardio machines are fine but obviously of lower quality when compared to offerings at Healthsport. There are plenty of machines however some of the weight machines are VERY old but they get the job done. Wasn’t busy when I went at 5 during the week. I wasn’t able to do my complete workout because somebody else was using the only rope attachment for the cable machines.
Overall, calcourts is an okay gym if you live in Eureka, it is $ 9 cheaper per month than Healthsport which could matter to you. I have decided that I prefer the atmosphere of Healthsport as the machines are newer and the whole gym is more modern. I also noticed that the people who work at calcourts are a lot less courteous and they do not give their members free guest passes ever. Healthsport invites me to bring friends in for free because they know that’s how you get new members!

The pool is nice for laps. Other than that, I hated it. There is no changing area in the locker rooms. Everyone just stands around naked and stares at each other. People sit in the jacuzzi naked. I think that’s gross. It’s not your personal bathtub, people! Plus the chlorine was so strong that it was burning the crap out of my eyes as well as my sister who goes with me. Very disappointed.

I’ve been a member of Cal-​Courts for a few years now. During my first year I stuck to doing laps in the pool and taking the occasional aqua aerobics class.
It’s hard to get in the pool in your bathing suit in front of a bunch of people, but all of the students were welcoming and seemed non-​judgmental. There were both men and women in the class of all ages, shapes and sizes. Instructor, Jacquie was energetic and super friendly. I really liked her choice of music. She was very encouraging and provided a really good workout.
On my way out of the pool one day I met a man who was making a drastic health change in his life and was on his way to loosing 200 pounds. He really inspired me to check out the rest of the gym and look into using the weight rooms and exercise classes. It was the best thing I’ve done for my health! I had never belonged to a gym before and for whatever reason, I was intimidated to work out in the weight room or take any aerobic classes and only used the pool.
I’m so glad I checked out the rest of the gym because I discovered Zumba… and Tigger. I took several Zumba classes from different instructors at Cal-​Courts and had fun in all of the classes, but there was something special about Zumba Instructor Tigger. He is an amazing dancer and has the wonderful ability to choreograph Zumba routines with dance steps like the salsa, tango, waltz, hip-​hop and many other Latin infused steps that are easy to replicate and follow. He takes the time to explain the steps and work with anyone who might have questions. He knows a lot about the history and culture behind specific dance movements and I look forward to his quick snippets of information he gives between songs. His classes and music are all about body-​positivity and empowerment. Besides helping you get your sweat on he is super encouraging and promotes self-​acceptance and awareness of ones own worth. There is a group of women and sometimes men who take Tigger’s classes and their ages range from 10 to 70. His classes appeal to everyone and the dance steps can be adjusted to go at your own pace. All of the students are really friendly and supportive of one another.
I agree with other posts about Cal-​Courts, it is a bit dated, but the facilities get the job done and I really like the big variety of cardio machines and weight machines they have. There is a really good schedule of classes and all of the instructors I have met so far are top-​notch. The front desk staff is always really friendly.
The only complaint I have about Cal-​Courts is their lack of a single uni-​sex or family bathroom. The women’s locker room policy clearly states on the door that no male children above the age of three are allowed into the women’s locker room. This policy absolutely does not work for my family. I am a single-​mom of a four year old boy. My son is still potty-​training and he cannot go into a public bathroom on his own. I would feel terrified sending him into the men’s locker room not being able to help him or know what’s going on around him. Yes, we are able to use the changing room by the pool to change clothes, but there is no where for my son to go to the bathroom where I can help him this also means that I can’t go to the bathroom because I need to take him with me. I spoke to the front desk about it and they said I could take him into the locker room when he has to use the restroom. This presents and awkward situation for us because my son is really tall and he looks more like a 6 year old. I could tell some women were upset in the locker room when I brought him in to use the bathroom. He is totally oblivious to their private parts at this point and could care less, but it made them feel uncomfortable and their reactions to my son being in the locker room made me feel uncomfortable. There is absolutely no way around this until my son is older.
I think if Cal-​Courts were to build a uni-​sex/​family bathroom they could cater to a lot more members that they are currently shutting out. Single-​parents of opposite-​sex children and people of non-​gender conforming status need a place to use the restroom too without feeling ashamed or uncomfortable.
It would also be helpful if they offered childcare for parents who would like to take classes in the evenings at 6:30.
Good gym, I would recommend Cal-​Courts to my friends and family.

Cal Courts is a very «Humboldt» gym. If you’re from the area that will make sense to you. If not, what I mean by that is it has a very chill environment, providing just about everything you need, but the facilities are subpar (squeaky cables, weights never in order, etc). Their main competitor in Eureka (Healthsport) has them beat in that sense by a long shot. However, I still prefer Cal Courts for many reasons. The staff and most of the members are friendly and polite. They don’t put too heavy of an emphasis on either cardio or weight sections (they have lots of both!) and I absolutely love how the weight room is spacious and rarely too crowded for comfort (huge issue in other Humboldt gyms). Most of the instructors are great and energetic, and they are the only place around with a basketball court (not going to make or break it for me, but for some!) Overall, I really like Cal Courts. I hope they step up their game equipment wise, but definitely the best in Eureka.

This business discriminates against lgbt and is not in compliance with the law. When they are ready to serve the entire community I am open to rethinking this review.
By «discriminate» I mean that they do not have a policy nor accommodation for gender nonconforming people. Some people are literally without access to a restroom when utilizing these facilities.
Wide open for a lawsuit if somebody is looking to make a buck or change some tides.

I simply cannot understand the hostility of the management. I had a personal issue with the locker rooms that I brought up with one of the staff members. He told me to talk to the owner. The owner refused to speak with me. ??? My only request was to have a face-​to-​face discussion to talk about the issue. They refused to even talk to me after many attempts. (Honestly, what they did was illegal and if I had the resources I should try to sue, just to get them to change their discriminatory behavior.)

I love this gym because it’s affordable and it offers a variety of things for your money. It doesn’t have the newest machines like other gyms but all their machines are quality products. I really enjoy the fact that you are able to do crossfit at this gym for only 10 $ more on top of your membership. You are also able to visit a bunch of classes for free (included with your membership). The gym is open for a huge portion of the day which allows you to get your workouts even in the busiest of schedules.

I like this place. It’s always clean, including the women’s locker room, and It’s never so busy that you have to sign up for a machine. All of their classes are included with membership which is reasonable if you sign up at the right time. Friendly staff for the most part. The sauna and showers are a little dated but totally functional and they have a hot tub with jets, and a dry and wet sauna. The only thing I don’t like is that they never say anything to the parents who let their kids play around on the equipment. But that could be because there really isn’t a large enough staff.

Eureka’s version of 24 hr. fitness…
